The possibilities are endless, not just moving backwards and forwards in time, but sideways as well. Someone in Unknown Regions (unless called Thrawn) doesn't know what is happening in the Galactic Empire or New Republic. The stories could run concurrently and never touch one another.

I believe we will eventually see episodes X-XII, once the actors age up a bit, 10 - 15 years, and whatever situation we are left with at the end of IX has settled up in the galaxy. The new trilogy and standalone movies will keep SW in public eye until Skywalkers return.

First piece of good news I've heard all week.
This is win-win! We're getting RJ to bring us a whole new trilogy taking place.. somewhere. And at the same time, KK found a way to admit she can't really work with anyone else and keep her job at the same time. But hey, look what we're getting. If this how it has to go down, hey, I'm down for it. Good to see LFL has decided to keep the trilogy formats.:D
I wonder if this is going to play into all the unknown regions backstory they've been building up in the novels.. will our main character be an alien.. the possibilities..

An idea I'd love to see is for Rian Johnson to take a book out of Star Wars Legacy: An old Legends comic to which set the story 1,000 years into the future. Obviously, do not copy that idea, but basically having a significant time frame forward would aid a lot in moving the franchise forward, much like Star Trek the Next generation and the subsequent series did for that franchise.

It allows for a big break from what we know of SWs in terms of aesthetics as it is in the very distant future. Also, the idea of new races and cultures emerging so far into the future isn't too far-fetched(not that it wouldn't have been in the current timeline. It is a galaxy after all). I have my own ideas, like for example, instead of Jedi and Sith; you have something like Imperial Knights. Basically, Force users who serve various confederacies and fight one another.

But whatever, RJ and LF does I am game. Because, really it is high time SWs and the current Skywalker saga to end. And to take a book out of Legends in that one should push forward. And never back.

Agreed. I always felt like even in Legends, I felt like that area was ill-defined. Even with awesome groups, like the Chiss Ascendency. If anything, I'd love to see this galaxy be so radically different from the prior one. Maybe, instead of an Empire or Republic, there are a series of confederacies and they are all warring with each other. And instead of Jedi and Sith, you have Force Sensitives who act like Imperial Knights from the Star Wars Legacy comic. They serve these governments.

As for a story hook, it could be as simple as someone, like Ahsoka, or some other random Jedi who escaped Order sixty-six, venturing into this new galaxy. It would be a great way. Because, that character would be the audiences' POV character, in that A) they are accustomed to a specific atmosphere and appearance of SWs and B) would be a great vehicle to deliver exposition(smartly, though) about the new world that would come about.

I'm not convinced when it comes to a possible Unknown Regions setting. That could be too different and detached. And if it wasn't completely different then it would feel like an alternative universe kind of thing just for the sake of freedom so what's the point. Doing future is extremely risky and unlikely. It's probably better if the story moved towards future at a natural speed.

Doing something way in the past is the best idea IMO. There's a huge creative freedom but at the same time we're still connected to the core of Star Wars. Everybody would care about what the history of Jedi holds. Apparently Rian played with it a little bit in TLJ, which could mean he would like to continue exploring it. Handing that era to him is a perfect opportunity to get it right and lay the grounds for tons of connected stories. That could become basically a new franchise within the Star Wars universe, which is exciting. I think that's what they're aiming at.

I'll repeat myself: it's a trilogy, so it needs mass appeal. Centering it around the Force/Jedi/Sith is the best way to gain it. Frankly, I myself wouldn't like 3 movies spent on underworld or stuff like that. Standalones are perfect for experiments and niche settings, but let's keep trilogies close to the core of Star Wars. Big themes, epic stories. If they ditch Jedi - that's extremely ballsy. I would be open-minded, though. They wouldn't make a trilogy out of it if they thought it might not work. At least I hope so.

Can't wait for any kind of general information about the setting... I'm wondering when is it coming. Rian will get TONS of questions about it during TLJ promo tour, so I'm curious how much is he going to spill. Please, don't make us wait until Celebration 2019...

Maybe RJ vision for this new saga of SW is still based on the force. Like the force is still this folk lore history all over the universe but just not viewed as we capture it in the Skywalker saga. With the the new sequel trilogy(ST) and all this talk about JEDI/SITH. who is the SITH? we only have LUKE(last Jedi) and these talks about grey jedi and just being a force user and having the ability of using both sides of the force to become the strongest force user. Maybe there is force users that use it for good and bad and grey force users who on the otherside of the galaxy who here these stories of force users who might be trying to create this new JEDI/SITH campaign. Its something that RJ could possibly think of since creating TLJ. liike what happen if thats it with JEDI/SITH and have a story about the old republic but in the present time of the ST or after. i can see that and Disney also creating an Old Republic battle films of the past history. instead of makiing past trilogies pre Anakin, we get infamous battle of KOTOR, of Yoda, of Revan, or a side AND I HOPE IM THE FIRST TO SAY THIS HERE, A STORY OF JEDI SIFO DYAS and his doing of the clones in the PT. hmmm....

very excited by this, and Knights of an Old Republic Trilogy or origins of the Jedi Trilogy would be great

Just hoping it wont be about characters we've already seen we need something new now if star wars wants to go forward.

Now regardless of the timeline, I'd like to see (as many have stated above) a return to the Jedi and Sith era. We (well most of us) grew up with SW, knowing of, and reading about the Jedi and Sith in their relentless confrontations, and if we get nothing else....give me "Jedi stories" as this is what we're missing.

While the PT was full of Jedi, it was at the end of the existence of the Order that had evolved into something that they never meant to be...and were something of a military force instead of, well..."Jedi".

Then in the OT, they were all but gone...a legend in the memories of those that knew of them and lived in their presence, but at one time had been the "priestly force-users" of lore and were essentially protecting the galaxy from the darkness....give us that.

Yeah, I really hope it's not just the GCW from the perspective of other characters. I love GCW aesthetic, but we've been there a lot.
Plus, we arguably already got that with Rogue One. Add in the Battlefront books, Aftermath, etc- it's already so full.

Pre-episode material would allow for so much more to happen.

I'm interested on what on what they are planning on doing. I would love a KOTOR type of trilogy. Another thought came to me, what if Disney/Lucasfilm is in the process of conditioning us for a recast of Luke, Leia and Han? Think about it for a sec. They already re-casted Leia in Rogue One, even though they used CGI face mapping, the actress who played Leia has a similar look and could pull off an OT age Leia with out CGI face mapping. We got a re-casted Han Solo in the SOLO movie. What's to stop them re-casting a younger Luke (hopefully with Mark's approval)? That would allow Disney/Lucasfilm to make movies during the OT and before ST that has Luke, Leia and Han in them.

I think a bunch of people are missing an important part of the announcement, "Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored." That means no returning characters, at least not in prominent roles. Sure our favorite droids could make a visual cameo in order to keep that thread going but I assume there will be no named characters that we already know. That said, I do think it will be an old republic era story but I think people need to realize that does not mean it will be KOTOR. Rian Johnson is not going to re-purpose an old story when he has the chance to do a whole new story. I definitely hope there will be stories of Jedi vs Sith. I would say the origin of each but since Rian is only directing the first I really hope that he gets a story with a little more meat than that.

I really need this to be the Knights of the Old Republic era.. It could be an amazing LOTR style of SW. That said, if they pleasantly surprise me with something fresh I'd be excited as well.. I would just recommend not steering too far away from the galaxy we know except the Skywalker family and another planet blower upper sphere. lol

This may be an unpopular thought, but I hope they just move forward with the time line, or at the very least, same general time line. All this jumping around makes my head swim...

Hoping it will be in the Old Republic Era, with all the games and novelizations, it's a period of time even a lot of average SW fans have heard of, some of the best characters Star Wars has are vested in this golden age and even better plots and stories. Rian will have free reign on so much lore he is able to chew and spit out what he wants.

Although, very interested to see what tone Rian created for the latest installment first, giving him a trilogy before his SW film is out is a very confident sign.

Then I'll asky ou what I've asked other who have said this - what is the benefit in ending (as in ending Episode IX in such a way that they can't go back to it if they want in the future) the Skywalker saga? That never happened in the Legends material.

This is still Star Wars - there is no point in them throwing everything that makes it what it is out and starting 100% fresh. At that point they are just making a new property.
