The premise sounds great. However... anything that pushes the trilogy back bums me out. :| I hope "Knives Out" is going to move fast.

But yeah - a murder mystery written and directed by Rian, starring Daniel Craig as a detective? Yes, please! It's gonna be glorious. I just want that trilogy to start production so bad that I can't help a little bit of a negative reaction to this news... ;)

There's plenty of time to do both by late 2020.

If I understand it correctly, the article suggests they're going to shoot in November. It seems like a small production, so the film could be ready by the time IX comes out. I hope he's going to move right into the trilogy and that some groundwork for it has already been done.

Shooting doesn't take that long. If it's a small production, by the time Ep.IX would come out they would already be filming.

    Yep
if it's a non-FX based film it could be done filming in a few months.

Rian once said that he wants to direct a smaller movie before he's heading into a new SW movie. Furthermore the script for this movie is finished and the production will probably only take 2-3 months.

I assume that the GOT guys are further ahead on their series, but we are entering a curious time where the post IX landscape is wide open.

Well, this is the real test for him before SW. All depends in its box office.

Not really...? It's a niche film in a niche genre, so it's not gonna break the bank. The only "test" thing in it is the apparent quality of the film but unless this film is an absolute disaster (and such an occurence is EXTREMELY unlikely,) he will be fine.

Now, to the film itself - I like Chrstie's procedurals, so a film with a similar concept sounds like something I could enjoy. I'm interested in who will be cast in it outside of Craig. Can't wait to learn more.

    The film sounds interesting :)

And its probably a good and healthy thing for Rian to get his head out of the monster of a franchise that SW is for a little break before heading into it full force again once the scripts have cooled and passed through a few LFL/story board folks and such.

Yep. Probably you're absolutely right and the premise it's really interesting. But I still think it will be a test (the cache of Craig and Rian is there). Box office, critics, bad feedback, bad reception... Who knows, probably with the minimum detail Disney will use it against and have an excuse for the common "creative differences".
Hey, and who knows, it could be an absolute disaster, probability is there, like any other movie :p.

Perhaps it's because I'm a RJ fanboy, but I really want his stuff to come first. I'm just super comfortable with him setting the bar for what's to come. I want his film to be my introduction to the whole new era of Star Wars. But that's subjective, I know.

As for Benioff and Weiss, I think they're going to stay 100% committed to GoT up until the show ends (mid 2019, I assume), so it looks like them and Rian may wrap things up and be ready to go roughly around the same time.

Wild speculation: I think Rian could have an advantage, because he's writing and directing and he has an established team (Ram, Steve Yedlin etc.) who are proven to work efficiently together, whereas B&W may need time to find a director etc. On the other hand, though, it's possible that this process is already happening behind the scenes.[/QUOTE]

On the other hand I'm excited to see him work on something else that's smaller. It seems like this might have been a film Rian was working on before The Last Jedi come to him. Helming that project should help him line up future projects which was an exciting prospect of him doing a Star Wars movie.

I foresee low ratings on rt for that move because he ruined several childhoods. Anyway, probably a lot of people will go and see it, because they liked TLJ.
After all if it is a solid movie, I think it will help his new SW too.

I love Rian Johnson as a writer/director, loved Looper and TLJ, but I just have 'Zeroh' interest in seeing this movie. The sooner work starts on his SW trilogy, the better. All I can say is that he probably has some time to kill and is simply keeping himself busy. Hopefully in some round about way it helps to make his SW trilogy movies even better than they are already going to be!

I like to believe that's the case and it means we wouldn't get the trilogy yet anyway, but at least we have a new Rian Johnson movie to look forward to. But yeah, I also want the trilogy to start production ASAP.

@Pomojema Hey, I've read your article on Movie News Net about the latest casting addition (https://www.movienewsnet.com/2018/10/08/lakeith-stanfield-joins-the-cast-of-knives-out/) but there's also this passage:
Where does this synopsis come from? None of the Deadline articles (which seem to break everything about this movie) mentions this.

Michael Shannon is also in talks to join the cast. The cast for this film is really strong.
