So you mean to tell me that directing a small movie would take less time and resources than doing a blockbuster, and you could technically film one before focusing on a much larger project.

Huh. Who'da thunk? (Aside from, you know, ANYONE WHO KNOWS HOW FILM PRODUCTION ACTUALLY WORKS.)

Yeah it has puzzled me that people thought that his new Trilogy was cancelled or at least delayed for years based on him filming Knives Out.

I mean, he said from the get-go that he was going to take his time making them. It's not like he was going to magically have another Star Wars movie ready by 2020.

Anyone who thinks that Knives Out was going to change the time line is kidding themselves. At the same time, there is no guarantee this trilogy ever sees the light of day. Plenty of films in Hollywood get the theoretical "green light" only to never make it to the big screen. There are numerous reasons for that. Johnson could try and get started writing only to come up with nothing. He could get a script for the first one, and an outline of the over all trilogy, only to have Disney say "Thanks but no thanks."

It's a long way from KK saying yes, go ahead and do this, to getting to the point where a budget is handed over and preproduction starts. Hell, even then nothing is guaranteed (see the Boba Fett film and the Lord and Miller fiasco as evidence of this).

Sure many do get the "green light", but the vast majority of them dont get public announcement like RJ new trilogy. Boba Fett film was never announced (and never was a good idea). Lord and Miller fiasco is totally different situation, that was an issue with execution not green light. I do believe that it would be better to kill a new RJ trilogy earlier rather then later if they are going to do it. For me it is actually my most anticipated project outside of EP9.

I can't say I'm excited about it or that I'm not. Actually I'm not anything about it. I do think he is a good director, but as a writer, at least in the Star Wars universe,I think he isn't all that great.

As for Boba Fett, it was all but announced. And, if I remember correctly at one point in '15 it was being talked up pretty heavily. As for the public announcement, I think, and this is just my opinion, LFL jumped the gun big time by announcing this. Does he even have a script treatment for the first film yet? I believe they REALLY thought VIII was going to be a smash hit, loved by fans across the board. I also think they overestimated (big time) Solo and what it would do. The fact is, VIII was divisive, surely way more than what they were expecting. Solo was a bomb, and I'm not going to speculate on exactly why as I think there were multiple reasons for that. But they are certainly "licking" their wounds and trying to figure out how to get this franchise back to what they imagined it would be.

Anyway, the reality is, when it comes to RJ's trilogy, there is a LONG way from the announcement that they wanted to do a trilogy helmed by RJ to it actually being a reality. Will it see the light of day? Who knows? I don't. He has a good relationship with KK, so that helps. However, KK isn't exactly batting 1.000 right now. Iger himself specifically mentioned the Mandalorian and IX as being what they are focused on. I think he also mentioned D&D series, but I might be wrong. Add to that they are moving forward with another TV series and one wonders exactly where this fits in? Will this be made for the big screen, Disney streaming? Will it actually come to fruition? Again, I don't know. I think both sides, the "Heck yeah it is, there is NO WAY it doesn't" as well as the "there is no way it's happening" are just talking out of their rear end at this point.

Sorry for the rambling nature of this post. Just a bunch of thoughts that popped into my head. :)

Yet it was still not announced.
There was never an official Obi-Wan movie and there was never an official Boba Fett movie.
They explored the ideas. Hired some writers and looked into directors. And it never got past that for either one.
None of this was really announced as much as reported on.

They have repeatedly backed the idea of Rian Johnson's movies publicly.
They almost always had "no comment" on the other two.

    It's really not comparable.

I think for RJ trilogy to have been announced there had to be a story. A script I doubt it, but the story or story idea is what really matters. I think that is why you never saw an Obi-Wan announcement. It was just 2 hard to come up with a story because canon leaves little room for intriguing story. Boba Fett's character left little room for an intriguing story. Boba Fett had cool armor and that is what was the idea for a spin off. Not a good reason for a spin off. Mandalorian does away with Boba Fett to be able to have the freedom to have a compelling story.

Oh for sure. He had an idea and pitched it. They didn't just hand him a trilogy and say "go have fun"
This happens all the time. If you follow writers like Marc Bernardin (everyone should be anyways) or Zack Stentz on Twitter they often talk about how they will be asked to write for a show/movie of a big property and nothing ever comes from it. It's part of the business.

My guess is Lucasfilm had two film series after the Skywalker saga. RJ worked closely for months in the run up to TLJ. He pitched an idea for Bloodline that was used. He was approached about doing IX and declined, but may have asked about running one of the upcoming projects.

I asked Hidalgo a couple of years ago how far they had mapped out projects and he said 10 years. There's no way they've given two projects away without a plan.

And yet the impression I'm seeing from a number of people is that Lucasfilm supposedly had no plan with the Sequel Trilogy... Which doesn't sound accurate. It sounds more like they had an outline of where the story was going to go, but they didn't make either of the directors strictly adhere to every single detail in order to let them make the movies that they wanted to make.

People who say it didn't have a plan seem to be the ones who didn't like TLJ. So they probably didn't follow THEIR plan...

Giving filmmakers creative freedom doesn't mean "no plan". We know SW8's title was detetmined before Johnson took the helm (per one of his interviews), and LFL would hardly have settled on that without a plan! Of course there is a road map for the ST!

I could swear he came up with the title before he really started wotking on the script.

Good to know! Later than I wished, but I suspected late 2019 is likely (with the tempo of this production, it looks like the movie will spend a few months on the shelf). Let's hope it's good enough to have some award buzz.

Giving it a Thanksgiving release there's certainly some validity to awards buzz

And it's a Lionsgate picture. They left that part of the news out for some reason.
