There's no point arguing that TLJ has lots of comedy. In my opinion, horrible comedy. It was one of the reasons the movie is a major disappointment to me.

There's a video explaining why Rian's comedy was bad and out of place:

What about you? Did you... like the the comedy? Was it Rian's comedy that ruined the movie? Or maybe... improved it?

The comedy/humour wasn't good for me, at least most of the time. IMO Rian relied to much on splapstick, the weakest and most immature form of comedy. Rian made a good "comedy" movie before: Brothers Bloom. So, I don't understand why he failed creating good and funny humour this time.

I have nothing against humour in Star Wars. All the movies have jokes. For example TFA has a lot of comedy, but it's actually funny. Sometimes TLJ feels like a Marvel movie. => A serious scene gets ruined by a joke.

I loved the comedy. I loved the film. I'm not going to watch a YouTube video about it.

    Oh, another "TLJ sucks" video.
The comedy in TLJ didn't bother I me. I barely remember any of it, except for Hux in the beginning.

The comedy is almost literally no different than the OT comedy. There are some more modern mannerisms thrown in, but the comedy itself is very Star Wars. These people have absolutely no idea what they're talking about, and all of a sudden everyone is an expert in comedy theory.

I haven't seen the video you linked, but here is my take on the comedy problems:

    1) Too much of it in moments which should have been dramatic
    2) Too many groaners
    3) Too much of it flirts with breaking the 4th wall. Cell phone humor and your-mamma jokes in the GFFA? Gimme a break.

If you "barely remember any of it," then it failed.

Sure, but comedy is not why I watch Star Wars.

Only joke that bothers me is

Luke: No one is from nowhere.

    Rey: Jakku.

Luke: - Alright, that is pretty much nowhere.

It something with the rytmn in their conversation that makes it not belong in there.

I don't watch Star Wars for comedy either, but I do expect there will be lighthearted, comedic moments in a Star Wars film. A well written, well performed scene will be remembered when it is funny (and that means funny by design, not funny because of how ridiculous is was to see the greatest hero in cinematic history milking a space cow). Such scenes improve the overall quality of the film.

Your admission that you didn't really remember the comedy from E8 supports the notion that the comedy in that movie was quite poor.

It just didn't work for me. I smiled when Rey threw the rocks on the caretakers and that's it.

The mother joke to open the movie was flat out terrible.

Having your bad guys play for comedy is removing them any credibility.

Whatever, man. Like I said, I don't watch Star Wars for comedy. I barely remember comedy from any SW movie and I don't watch comedy movies in general. So yeah, ok, you are right.

Star Wars always had the "Marvel humor". The end of Empire: there's a big chase going on between Leia, Lando and Chewie vs the Empire. Yet who do we focus on? The droids. Yes R2 saves the day in the end but still. 4: Han does his everything is perfectly fine joke after a "serious" firefight. Chewie does his Tarzan yell in 6. Ewoks. Clones: we focus on the droids when there is a battle going on between the Jedi and the Separatists. 1: Jar Jar. The point is that the "Marvel humor" has always been there well before Marvel movies existed as we know 'em.

For sure, this was easily some of the cringiest humor in the series so far.

I'd happily take TLJ humor over "die Jedi dogs." Yeesh...

Honestly, I'd take most Jar Jar humor over that, even.

One of the reasons why I love The Last Jedi is that it has a sense of levity which Rogue One seriously lacks. This movie is so serious, so hard-boiled that it makes me sad. It's like an angsty teenager. Personally I believe that TLJ has the best humour in all of SW films. Yeah, I've said it.

The only bit of humor I didn't like was Poe at the very beginning. While funny, it changes the tone significantly from what I was expecting. It's like you're going with this at the very beginning of the movie? Okay then. It's way different then the "who talks first? I talk, you talk?" Joke from TFA. That "joke" makes more sense to me for whatever reason. TLJ intro joke was more tone/timing of it; though I did laugh however.

Yeah, that’s the one who stuck out the most. Besides the lightsaber throw...

Problem with it was that it was both unrealistic, and really destroyed Hux’s image of a enemy you could be afraid of. Heroes need inpressive adversaries to raise the stakes and make it interesting. Hux is just lame ar this point.

@Fernus Well, I'd say there were quite a few jokes that were not my cup of tea, but to each their own.
