With the teaser finally dropping for VII we have finally gotten our first tiny glimpse into Abrams Mystery Box: Star Wars edition.

With that in mind, how many cues do you think Johnson will take from Abrams in regards to production secrecy? Or will he try to strike some sort of balance between the openness of Lucas and the mystery of Abrams?

I think Rian's production will be just a bit more open than JJ's though it'll have nothing to do with any personal directorial decision.

With TFA, we're being dropped into a galaxy we have not seen in 30 years where everything, including the background of both existing and new characters, is a complete mystery and that mystery may be vital to the plot... by the time VIII rolls around, much of that mystery will be gone and there won't be a need for as much secrecy surrounding the production.

Sure, the plot will still be a closely guarded secret... but I do think we'll be thrown a few more tidbits here and there as far as production and characters go.

I agree. Hopefully it's a little more transparent than VII. I know it can be very frustrating with all the secrecy, especially after KK told us that we would be given more than we have. But at the same time I sure as hell don't want to know too much. If it remains at this pace by the time the movie comes out I'm pretty sure I'll have forgotten a lot of it.
Also, I wonder how much info we'll get about the spinoffs?

My first thought is "well....there's less to hide now, yeah?"

Personally, I'm hoping that the secrecy remains and that red herrings will be introduced as well. Having been totally spoiled/disappointed (but entertained) by the prequels, I rather enjoy not knowing.

To be fair I don't saw a movie from him and I don't know his approach in this matter.
He is a new director with only some movies under his belt, he has a huge company and JJ as a producer at the rear who has the last say in everything.
The mystery box will continue, if Ep.VII is making huge profit, no doubt.

It might be completely different this time around. Because Episode VII and VIII don't have the same condition for success.

Episode VII's mission is to bring as many people as possible to the theaters, revive the Star Wars Franchise and surprise loyal fans, make them feel as it was 1977 again.

EPisode VIII's mission is to live up to what Episode VII's success might be, prepare the audience for a climax... and just be a good movie. It is a more regular movie, I don't think they will be as secretive this time around.

I would argue that JJ is not the producer with the last say, thats got to be KK. I don't know but I'm assuming JJ's producer credit on 8 is going to be more of a vanity credit than say the very active producer GL was in 5 and 6. KK is taking over the GL role, not JJ.
