Forgive me if there is already a thread...

I am very excited for this. When I picture "new settings and characters" my head fills with images of various Star Wars tabletop RPG art. "Familiar" but "new" scenes and characters. These fill me with wonder and excitement and I cannot wait to see what we get.

After looking at your first image I want to have an alien protagonist or antagonist for Rian's trilogy. This would be something new.

I love that he is going to get a clean canvas to work with. Can't wait to get more details on what it is going to be about.

The biggest problem with a live-action alien hero is the constant focus on the make up of the alien.
Usually they aren't heavily focused on in action-heavy movies is eventually you start looking at them too much. You notice more.
That one antenna that doesn't move quite right...
Even with CGI where it is now, you run a lot of risks with that.

And if your main character is CGI, why not just make the whole thing animated?

I agree. Maybe as a side character?

Side character is perfectly fine. Or even the main villain IMO.
Even with Avatar, you spend so much time in the CGI rich world that you begin to see the cracks in the characters.

Rogue One too. And I thought they did a great job not lingering on them.

    I would love it! But...
...exactly. It's not impossible to pull off, but would be very expensive. Perhaps too expensive for the studio to accept when they know they can just hire a human. Anyway, an alien protagonist is something I'd really want to see, perhaps one of my top wishes for future films. Twi'lek would be great.

Even movies that pull it off, usually use enough tricks to keep the focus off of them.
Unless you go full Planet of the Apes where the alien is very human-like and you can mocap it all....but even then you pick up on it.

With the setting being some "new corner of the galaxy" I would be very surprised if it would have been populated primarly by humans. Also, another point in your alien protagonist discussion - putting up and taking down the FX makeup takes hours and is something many actors that have to live through it complain about, especially if it needs to be done on a daily basis.

It's why Hugo Weaving never returned as Red Skull.
It's why Ron Perlman is the best ever because he put on full Hellboy makeup for a Make-A-Wish kid.

I think that would be cool as well. I've always been an advocate of a female sith villain and for me a female sith alien villain is even richer - like a Darth Talon type character.

sex appeal will go a long way to legitimize alien main characters as well as motion capture. imagine a alien cobra head(like the tom cruise war of the worlds aliens but less ugly) with a firm bottom jaw and a well structured face with a good smile, well built humanoid body(for the ladies), devil tail, 4 fingers with nails that pop up when angry with a devil tail. the face can work without lips and a flat noise

Interesting discussion! I have said on here before that for a movie to carry the SW logo, it needs at least one thing—-the opening crawl with an epic fanfare. Even RJ’s trilogy should have this.....and how about Alan Silvestri for the score.....

    Thoughts?

    That sounds good to me!
Though I wonder if Rian's trilogy will skip the opening crawl like RO did?

But it will be a trilogy, not a standalone. Even though I would have LOVED for GE to pull off using the Rogue One European Celebration opening crawl (A New Hope through the 2nd paragraph then it all come apart with sirens wailing and blaster fire)

There needs to be something to get us jumpstarted into the new trilogy - either an opening crawl or a sublime opening narration told by Cate Blanchett (yes, I am biased, I need to see Cate in a SW film.) Speaking of music, the best option would be of course John Williams, but if not him, then my second choice is Howard Shore.

Blanchett would incredible in Star Wars. I hope they build around young actors like they have with the new trilogy.
An actor or actress the caliber of Adam Driver just given full reign not having to be contained to that saga...
