It’s definitely not happening, unless it definitely ends up happening.

    I
Meh, I didn’t expect an announcement for X ...but I still was looking for something with more depth than A series of Band of Brothers in space. Still I don’t blame them Disney has to cater to the audience where they will make money. That being said it’s nice to see that Marvel is going ahead with Secret Invasion. I hope that they ‘ll tap Daisy for the role of Spider Woman. She’s perfectly suited for that part.

    I hope so.
I'd rather see interesting failures than boring wookiepedia articles brought to life.

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.

Rogue Squadron, unless I misunderstood, is a cinematic release. I think the same holds true for the Taika Waititi project, although again I could be wrong.

We knew that Rian Johnson's project wasn't going to be the next two films. Well, at least I did. He was only gonna be brought up today if he was suddenly directing the 2023 film (which would have been a stunner) or if he was in charge of one of the TV series. The interesting thing to me is that Leslye Headland is indeed doing a TV series around the High Republic. To me, this is the most exciting project since it's outside of the Skywalker era.

With two films on the horizon they're not going to discuss anything beyond that.

Yeah, the last date piece I remember is that he was supposed to be after Benioff and Weiss’s trilogy, which would’ve put him a ways off (ex: if they were the 2023 film, and even if they released one a year, RJ would be, at earliest, 2026).

note, Feige’s project that had been mentioned before also got no mention. Marvel Studios didn’t mention Blade or some other films. This was heavily focused on Disney+.

i was mainly hoping for a word so I knew when it’d be coming, but since they didn’t say, and we still have no news either way, then we’re still in this ambiguous, possibly “no news is good news” stage.

^Actually, that's a good point. They still haven't officially stated it isn't happening. It could still go either way. #ForeverHopeful ;)

I'm pretty sure Disney/LFL are going to want more than 2 new Star Wars movies in the future, and we already knew RJ's trilogy wouldn't be among the first things to come out (he'll at least do Knives Out 2* first, which will probably not be out before 2022 at the earliest, to be potentially followed by a big SW film in 2025 at the very earliest). If Johnson's trilogy happens -- and we have heard nothing to suggest it won't, yet numerous confirmations that it will -- then I personally expect it to drop around the end of the decade.

    *I'm super-hyped for this, too! :D

If anything they seem to be moving away from this. They currently have December 2023-2025 and 2027 in the diary. We know Rogue Squadrun is the 2023 date, Taika Waititi was mentioned at the announcement so likely he currently is inline for the 2025 date, which would fit with his schedule considering he has 2 films 2 release before he gets to star wars. So that would mean Johnson's trilogy would be 2027 before part 1 of his trilogy was released. A full decade after it was announced. That's kind of Avatar levels of development. Considering Lucasfilm's less than stellar record at taking their time to develop projects before announcing them, it's much more likely that they announced it and then it has slowly fallen by the wayside, rather than still being part of the plan.

Of course, they could up the schedule, but personly I think they will wait to see how Rogue Squadron does at the box office before they announce any further films, so I don't think they are going to revisit the theatrical release schedule until at least 2024, especially with more and more studios moving more and more content to streaming.

Personly think if the Johnson trilogy is slowly been forgotten, announcing its cancellation would just vindicate those who hated the Last Jedi, and making the trilogy would cause another massive load of toxicity. Its much easier for both johnson and Disney to go yeah its still in development and who knows if anyone asks... rather than open up either of the other options

If they were going to part ways the easiest thing to do from a PR standpoint would have been Rian Johnson deciding not to do it after coming off one of the biggest hits of 2019. If figured if they were gonna part company that was the moment to do it. Seems like the most likely outcome is that Rian's idea doesn't fit into the release schedule they had imagined 3 years ago. I did find it interesting that Leslye Headland mentioned Johnson in a recent interview and now her project has been revealed to take place during the High Republic.

Maybe RJ's trilogy happens towards either the beginning or the end of the High Republic, and they aren't ready to announce that yet?

Get him to film the moment of The Great Disaster.

Well..I was joking, but now thinking about that with the Holdo Maneuver and showing the ramifications of such a situation would be both beautiful with his cinematography, yet also satisfying after people have gone off on how it’s one example of how his film “breaks continuity”

You know... I kinda feel bad. I think a lot of us gathered a long time ago that this Trilogy wasn't happening, and thought that Rian himself kinda provided coded language to let his fans know it wasn't happening (without literally saying it). And I guess it's possible to postulate ways it was still happening (and since that's what's this thread's about, I think that's fair game). They announced some REALLY interesting projects for Disney+ (which I will be watching) AND theatrical releases.

That said I have 2 questions:

    1. What would it take to convince you that this trilogy is not happening?
    2. Is it really such a big deal if he doesn't do a new trilogy?

    1. Them actually saying it isn't happening.
    2. No. It's very clear the direction Star Wars wants to head in is strictly nostalgia based. And I'm not sure he'd fit those plans.
