I totally agree, the problem is that just as in politics, the loudest decides the topic to be discussed. So as long as there is a background noise against him I doubt we will see him. They will let the dust settle.

As I said in 2018, this trilogy will never be made.

I personally would like to see Johnson make another film with Adam Driver; whether it's a SW film doesn't really matter to this Kylo fan!

You can pat yourself on the back if you want, but we still don't have firm details on the next Star Wars film in 2025 and that's six years after the last film and eight years after they announced Johnson doing more. In the meantime his star has risen even more with successful movies/TV series. I'm sure Lucasfilm would love if someone like Johnson would drop everything and make them a film, but directors of that stature aren't exactly comfortable sacrificing 3-5 years it takes to make these things.

The lack of any firm news on this beyond that initial announcement way back does certainly leave me feeling uncertain about its future. Though DailyPlunge raises a very good point in that we don't even know what is happening with the next Star Wars film, Rian Johnson or otherwise. I'm a fan of Rian's work and I'd still enjoy seeing his trilogy, but all in all I could easily see it going in either direction at this point.

It would be more worrying to me to hear that Johnson was spreading himself thin making his Knives Out films as best as he could and following it up with Poker Face while doodling his SW project at the same time just to satisfy the fandom's obsession with totally arbitrary timescales and being constantly feed reassurances.

At this stage I'll be pretty stunned if Johnson makes another Star Wars film. Mostly just because so much time has passed and the fact it's clear Lucasfilm has a lot of work to do on the film front before they're courting high level directors. I won't be surprised if he directs a TV series episode here and there just because he has a fantastic relationship with Lucasfilm and it would require less of a time commitment.

Frankly, if I was Johnson I'd avoid them like the plague in future; despite being the most critically acclaimed, and yes, the best of the ST they retconned his film because of the actions of a bunch of online hate campaigners and treated one of his main cast appallingly.

Well, once again no mention of Rian Johnson's trilogy being made from Celebration. That means we can celebrate!

I remember, the moment I saw The Last Jedi trailer, I knew the his trilogy would never actually be made. You can't butcher a character like Luke Skywalker and expect to make another SW film.

I find it really weird so many people pitch their personal opinions as if they speak for a group. It's your opinion. If Johnson decides he wants to make time to come back it'll happen.
Well, this is just nonsense. The trailers for The Last Jedi came long before any announcement about future Star Wars film from Rian Johnson. That announcement was made right before the film was released and long after after two trailers had been released.

Honestly, I would be more surprised if RJ's movie wasn't on the menu again in at least 4-5 years' time. Imagine an announcement at the 10-year anniversary of TLJ that RJ's trilogy is coming back, with an announcement, a cast (or at least an idea of one), and a script. Given that he's a popular director due to Knives Out & Glass Onion* that's worked with Lucasfilm before, delivered his product on schedule, on budget, had minimal leaks, was financially successful, and had a good working relationship with most of - if not all of - Lucasfilm and the cast, I can't imagine Lucasfilm not approaching him again once the Knives Out stuff is done.

*That isn't to say he wasn't popular beforehand, just that these films have sort of rebounded/revealed (depending on how much you like/dislike RJ) that the man has talent.

Good to know... I still think that Ryan is terrific director and storyteller, all the movies from him were fun and far from dissaster.
His trilogy and moving away from Skywalkers was something I was really hyped about, mostly because I was hoping for something fresh like Prequel Trilogy, without rehashing star destroyers and all the facelifted or lazy designed tech in sequels. And yes, I loved TLJ. It was fun movie and I know it sucked for people who expected Skywalker to shred some dark troopers past his 60s.
But it's 6 years already and I feel we moved on and all the Lucasfilm announcements do not help.
The magic, when I opened Cinema magazine with concept art for Episode 1 as a kid on elementary school and read about the movie in production,
is no longer. Times have changed and it's about sharing tons of info, no matter how solid, but just sharing and that makes me to ignore most of the Lucasfilm announcements since the Solo.

But, if Rian ever returns, I will be happy and still to this day, frickin' 6 years after TLJ, there is internet flooded with people that can't forget about their hate for the movie. Crazy.
But at this point of time, I am at peace if that doesn't happen.

You know...what makes me sad is Rian has a real affection for Luke, yet look at the hate he got. Personally, if any character was disrespected I think it was Leia.

The internet is also flooded with people who think Rey and the sequel trilogy characters are hated, movies would never be made with them, and that Disney is trying to erase them. What you read online isn't reflective of real life. This is a problem that's much bigger than just Star Wars. What people are screaming about online is very rarely reflective of the general public, but sometimes it's difficult to separate reality for online reality.

    I recently re-watched TLJ.
I will admit, until this viewing, I have been firmly in the hate camp on this movie and have been unable to give it another chance.

Yet after my re-watch, I would really love to see what RJ would do with his own stand-alone trilogy. I still don't feel like he should've been given a movie in the Skywalker saga, with his strong choice to depart from the SW norm. But giving him the reign to tell a trilogy story in the SW universe without the pressure of the Skywalker saga is exactly the kind of thing Disney should be doing more of.

Expanding the SW universe should be the main focus for Disney at this time; Let Favreau and Filloni continue their storylines (flesh out and conclude everything that started in CW and Rebels and now the Mandoverse), then bring in new creative voices to tell new and exciting stories that break away from the SW mold such as RJ.

But honestly, it seems like RJ's time with SW is done and we're going to have to wait and see if anyone is able to step up into the space he started to create.

    Well said.
I myself have decided to call it a day..my watch, to quote Jon Snow, with SW is over. I've loved it for 42 years, but I'm a Skywalker fan, and that era is gone. I can't get behind the 'new version' of SW, it's not my cup of tea. Big thanks to the mods and everyone who have allowed me to express my feelings here.

So long everyone! I hope the SWU will continue to entertain you.
May the Force Be with You.;)

For no particular reason, the thought occurred to me the Cantina should add a new like/dislike post reaction category:
