    No please.
No Rey Sky/Solo (and Snoke resurrected).
It will make everything a joke.

Well, we know that someone isn't being entirely honest here. It's clear to me that he is just trying not to stifle JJ's film or the discussions among people that'll lead up to it. JJ knew who Rey's parents were. He told Daisy when they were filming TFA. And he had conversations with RJ. I think RJ is just saying that JJ didn't "dictate" to him. He didn't say "you have to make her parents nobodies". He left it for RJ to decide - and RJ came to the same conclusion. It's just neither director wants to get in the others way. And so RJ is covering his tracks and not shutting down potential discussion points that JJ might want to use for IX.

Look at it this way: a lot of people thought Vader was lying to Luke in TESB - and this played a part in the actual plot of ROTJ. Yoda had to confirm it to Luke (and us). So JJ might well want to do the same. They might hint at Rey being a Palpatine or Kenobi for some reason (wish fulfilment). Or they might want to make out that her parents weren't bad and did love her or that something else happened. JJ might have it be that Kylo was wrong and the story was just Rey's worst nightmare and not the actual truth. There is room there - and if JJ did change the story and have her no one parents not be drunks but decent people, that wouldn't contradict anything.

But she isn't a Solo or Skywalker. People need to let go of that, quickly.

Some people will still be arguing for Rey Solo/Skywalker even after episode IX. I was a huge fan of Rey Kenobi, I can admit now that she is not Rey Kenobi. Although i do still believe that Obi Wan Kenobi was guiding Rey at times during TFA and TLJ.

Just because Rey's parents are nobodies, doesn't mean that her grandparents are? What if she's the granddaughter of Obi-Wan? Or Palpatine?

Probably not, but it could keep the lineage going.

I think initially the plan was to bury it.

I actually didn't care who Rey's parents were until she went full Mary Sue at the end of TFA. Then there needed to be an explanation.

What they should do is set Episode IX 10 years in the future. I'd love to see Kylo visit the Sith origins and discover that Rey was a Camino clone of Sideous. That's the sort of conflict you want to feel about a character you love.

I remember being so annoyed when as a child I discovered Vader was Luke's dad! My reaction was 'That's impossible!!!!'. It made ROTJ so interesting to watch - it shook everything up.

Also another thing is that looking at RJ comments about Rey's parentage...he clearly didn't get it.

The most interesting outcome would be if she'd been related biologically to a dark side user.

Honestly, the fact that we weren't given definitive answer on Rey's parents or lineage was not one of the reasons I had a problem with TLJ. And it was pretty obvious by the way Kylo said it to her and the audience that what he said may not have been true. That is a reveal that can wait until IX imo.

I had other issues with TLJ, this wasn't one of them.

So basically, he's saying he's not writing the next one, so they can do whatever they like with the story, vastly changing the overall arc of characters in one fell swoop, even though it'll make all 3 movies feel very different and disjointed. They should have written the trilogy as one story.

The Last Jedi vastly changed the overall arc of characters compared to TFA.

Perultimate sign of this is that making ep IX will be difficult now, TLJ made a dam, made its own arc, like a standalone movie.

It even didn't(while could) made compensating moves for the fact Leia will be not alive in ep IX.

I keep hearing this and it confuses me a little.
When you say, "it made a dam", do you mean it made the events of IX unpredictable? If so, isn't that a good thing?
It strikes me that we're left with a finale that slightly resembles that of the end of AOTC, with the onset of war and our heroes having suffered a great deal.
If find it a better place to be than TFA, as RJ actually presented characters to us rather than the shells (slight hyperbole there) that JJ gave us.
e're now more invested in these characters and the story of Rey and Ren going forward - and the story can go in a number of ways:

Is Rey capable of leading the Jedi?
How will the war be going when IX starts?
Will Ren be the ruler he imagined or will he be conflicted?
Will Rey and Ren/Poe/Finn get it on?

I think I could write a pretty good story, going on from TLJ. I hope a professional like JJ could write an even better one.
I certainly don't see the dead end that you're imagining.

in my view a "dam" means a blockade of the flow for powerful solution in ep IX. by the ep VIII.

We are left with just 2 characters confronted, Rey and Kylo.

    If they get together...
    If she kills him....
If he stays on dark side for eternity...
If nothing actually happens(quite likely actually)....

Weak solutions left, you name it.

If Leia was alive for ep IX. it would be different, and it seems film was made presuming ep IX would be Leia's,with all possibilities it brings, but nothing have been done to compensate actress loss, which is sign of deliberate neglection of the connection.
Belief-it will be solved somehow by the ep IX team, go guys!
What was important was to get 2 bln masterpice delivered at time almost as like it is standalone movie..

So what was the alternative to these 4 apparent endings?

Leia to help redeem Kylo as a mother.-balancing factor, preventing galactic Titanic around just 2.

And, also a last original Star Wars cast.

Perhaps nobody calculates jet(if we exclude Luke's ghos possible cameo), ep. IX. will be first without original Star Wars cast or characters.

(yes, please spare R2D2, C3P0 and whatever basketball player in Chewbacca costume)

Rey and Ren are the two main characters. Let old things die @McDiarmid
It makes no sense to have the hold heroes fulfil the hero journey of the new hero.

And again, you're not really explaining where the dead end is - just that you'd prefer it if Leia were alive to redeem her son. You've just pointed out 4 possible endings. There are others - and that is just Rey/Ren story...

No I can not let is its just another film, another one more season of what Lucas have started. ep IX.

Only After this 1-9 wraped it will be without obligation to legacy.

To early , and thus already with consequences.

Disney allowed swap to random main hero just 2 films to early. Ep VIII-leading to IX.

    Just 2 films.

Entirely New trilogy will be delight with its randomnes and no obligations for previous films , in case of sequel trilogy this same approach lead to practical flop (not apparent during ep VII because there was hope) .---below

    People aren't stupid.
Well even if they would be, its obvious what people expected from sequel triology, which based its power, its roots , its esteem and its renome'. and this was to be the last Skywalker trilogy (not an excuse for last Skywalker trilogy, but really that, last Skywalker trilogy).

It fails to meet that expectation.

This use to be my all time favourite subject in the ST.. until that clusterf*** of a film TLJ.

Some good bits sure, but the bad was BAD.

Just took the wind right out of my sails.

No wonder Daisy cried when JJ was announced for 9. Thank the maker.

Lyko* Ren ,(and what was that Ren for all Gods and Saints ?)

Against the Mary Sue more powerful than chosen one, born by 2 drunkards which put her on market at age of 5 for very low price.

Yeah just like Lucas who decided to make Vader Luke's father just before Empire and Leia Luke's sister just before ROTJ, creating HUGE plot holes and questions about the previous movie(s)...

Come on people, such changes happen all the time, both according to the fan reaction and for the purpose of the story...

Didn't Lucas say he ended ANH the way he did because he didn't know how popular it was going to turn out?
