Star Wars: Episode IX is nearing the end of principal photography, and it's quite possible veteran actor Richard E. Grant is done with his portion of principal filming before any potential scheduled reshoot commitments.

In an interview with RadioTimes.com, the Academy Award nominated actor speaks briefly about his Episode IX filming experience, specifically about the level of secrecy surrounding the production.

There has been a growing sense of frustration among Star Wars fans over Lucasfilm's level of secrecy regarding their films, but when it comes to Episode IX, Richard E. Grant believes it will pay off for fans in the end.

RadioTimes is reporting that Grant revealed fans can expect pretty big twists in the film, which will be Earth-shaking to fans of the franchise. We don't have the full interview, but RadioTimes did not quote Grant with that information, and you'd have to imagine if he said these exact words, they would slap quotation marks all over it. We are just providing what they have reported based on their interview with the actor.

Grant did however speak on the level of secrecy behind Episode IX:

The level of secrecy is not new to Star Wars, nor its fans. In another interview a few days ago, via Digital Spy, Grant takes us into the experience with him, to really get a feeling of what performing in the shadow of this level of secrecy and security feels like!

The protection continues beyond the walls of Pinewood Studios too, as Grant reveals covering up like a celebrity avoiding paparazzi, except instead of TMZ and their barrage of dumb questions, they are avoiding drones with cameras:

In a swift blow to fans hoping for a revenge of the Chiss, last summer Grant made it clear he is not playing Grand Admiral Thrawn in the movie. The details about his character are a mystery to this point, though Grant appears to indicate it is a character that is his to own.

Grant's words have been muddled and mixed up over the last few months, and we were admittedly thrown a bit last week by statements he made, which sounded like he may be playing someone familiar to the franchise. We later corrected this as undetermined, as it was a matter of context.

As a fan I completely understand and feel the frustration over the secrecy behind Lucasfilm projects, but at the same time I admire their dedication to protecting the experience of taking in their story the right way: In the theater, suspending our disbelief, getting lost in that galaxy, and taking in all of the magic and wonderment that made this franchise so great to begin with. So while I selfishly stomp my feet like Veruca Salt wanting things now, I tip my hat to everyone over there for saving me from myself.

We are less than 11 months away from Star Wars: Episode IX, which will reveal all of its secrets on December 20, 2019.

I honestly think there is a chance of Richard E grant playing Obi Wan.

With a bit of facial alteration he could be made to look like an older obi wan, and in certain photos he does strike a resemblance to Alec Guinness.

With the interview where he said the room “went upside down” after telling him his characters name.

See to me that “The room whent upside down “ quote is more he actually has a named character role in Star Wars of which he has admitted he is a fan rather then ok the you will be playing First Officer B with a small cameo type role.
As prior to going to that meeting with JJ he didn’t actually know what film he was auditioning for.
But that’s just my take on the quote & could be wrong.

Don’t think he is playing Obi Wan. They could easily age Ewan and make him a more than passable old Obi Wan. There would be no need to cast another actor to play him.

“Oh, it’s definitely worth it. If you’re a Star Wars fan, and I am, then knowing what’s coming in this is quite something. I absolutely understand why they’re so secretive about it, because it’s very exciting.”

Gotta admit I am super excited and hyped for episode IX especially after Richard E Grant’s words above - also there’s another part of the interview not quoted here where the words “earth-shaking “ are used regarding pretty big twists coming our way in episode 9. Whatever they have planned is gonna be spectacular and amazing . I believe that . Richard E Grant is a fan too - he understands . :)

They said the same for VII and VIII that the secrecy was worth it for a very poor result.

This would be outrages and really disrespectful for Ewan McGregor. Furthermore the hate from the fans would be enormous. But the actor basically confirmed he's playing a new character. => "...but the character is just mine!”

And the majority liked TFA and TLJ. So it probably was worth it.

What is he supposed to say? He hates it? It's like asking an athlete if they're going to win the big game or not. What are they gonna say? No? Of course they're going to say they're gonna win.

True that’s possible but am sure he means what he says otherwise why be part of something you hate ? I don’t think it’s just about the pay cheque - you choose the roles you want as an actor . Many actors have turned down Star Wars in the past because they don’t want to be part of it. However just because one fan thinks what’s coming is epic and exciting doesn’t mean another fan does .

    Anyway am staying positive
and hoping whatever they have planned resonates with the majority of fans . As long as they give me a good story and it makes sense that’s fine by me. :)

The story isn't that original and clearly not deserve a Fort Knox secrecy.

    Just my opinion.

    It's just teasing.

Why would they hire a recognizable actor just to be a body double for Alec Guinness? If force ghost Obi-Wan is in it I think fans would be much happier if they just aged Ewan McGregor.

Then he said, "The room went upside down" which implies to me it has something big to do with Rey. The room would not go upside down if he was revealed to be Plagious or Thrawn (most people have no clue who they are). The room might go upside down though if he was a survivor of Lukes Jedi academy, Reys dad, killed Reys parents, kills Rey or something like that

Yeah, I think we kinda have to keep that expectation in mind.

Thrawn and Plagueis are super popular in the fandom, but the vast majority of moviegoers very possibly wouldn't know about or remember either of them. I guess it's possible Grant is a fan that would be more familiar, but I think you're right that this has more to do with the current story being told rather than any other sort of fanservice.

I wouldn't mind being wrong about that, because I'm actually a sucker for fanservice done right. But I guess we'll see.

I love a little fan service too. Bring on Thrawn, Plagious, and ghost Obi-Wan! It would be sick to see them on the big screen. I would especially lose my blast if Ewan in some aging makeup as Obi-Wan showed up.

Rey still has no name so I don't get why people would go upside down with a name nobody knows.

    No offense.

Twists you say... I have to be careful what I say because some people are too sensitive. The Skywalker Saga is about family and love. Can't wait to see how it all turns out.

    Let's say he's someone like Rey's grandfather.

Regardless of his name, a lot of fans will find value in simply that.

There are probably ways to get even more creative with it, though- for instance, maybe he's integral to this plot, or to something that happened in the OT or Clone Wars. If someone had mentioned the name Erso four years ago it would've not been particularly exciting, but now we know that Jyn and Galen both played huge parts in bringing down the Empire via the destruction of the first Death Star.

I don't think a surname is the only way fans can get excited about a character.

My point is that they reacted to his name not his role.

That's what it is in the report.

It's just a matter of words. No big deal.
