In the books it was across the front, in the script it was just torso.

Within the intensive care pod in the medical center, Finn lay in a medically induced coma, his health and life still very much in the balance. Dr. Kalonia’s prognosis had been favorable, even positive, but nothing certain could be said until Finn had fully recovered. When wholly parsed, the phrase “be all right” could mean one thing to a physician and something else entirely to the patient

A physical back injury to develop his character...Finn doesn't seem like one for revenge besides that Phasma but that looked like it was being played for laughs ...

Wasn't Hidalgo saying that with contradictory stuff the movie is canon and not the book?

He said if it is in the book its canon as long as it dosen't alter the movie. So finn took the hit to his back (movie) is in a medically induced coma (book)

There are other contradictory elements between the film and book.

For instance, in the book, Poe does not fly into the oscillator.

Snoke's speech to Kylo about sentiment being the downfall of the empire (which makes "Finish what you started" make much more sense, and his talk about the pull of the light).

I didn't dwell much on the differences because they seemed to me to be either simple cuts or make for more exciting VFX.

Finn's wound to the back could fall into this category, but like I said in the OP, it "felt" like the wound to his back was more than just choreography, and may have been intentionally added at Rian's request.

Finn is lucky he was wearing a thick leather jacket. It is what saved him from being killed. Not only that John Boyega said he will much more physical in VIII, so he will be ok.

It's apparent the book and scripts were released before final production changes were made. Someone dropped an article in the main Finn thread which reveals a ton of changes for at least six characters and the potential overall storyline elements. I believe this is where the contradictions arose. For instance, said article, admits Snoke and Maz's design and for Snoke, his gender, was not determined until the last minute.
