    What's Dark Forces?
In the legends timeline, Kyle Katarn steals the Death Plans as a mercenary for the rebellion. Jan Ors is the rebel operative who helps recruit him and prepare him for the mission.

It started one of Lucasarts' most well-received video game series that included sequels Jedi Knight, Jedi Outcast, and Jedi Academy -- and associated books, FMV cutscenes, etc. The books had some great writers and painters working on long-form narratives.

    How might it play differently?
What if that story of stealing the plans and foiling the Dark Forces program were retold from the perspective of Jan, presumably played by Felicity Jones?

Jan Ors was a fairly undeveloped character in the games, both on-screen and during cutscenes. However, playing up her role as spymaster and handler for rebel operatives would fit into the vibe of Zero Dark Thirty's Jessica Chastain. Kyle might steal the plans (and that's true, from a certain point of view) but the political dynamics of the rebellion would also be on display and how much work and sacrifice went into their theft. Kyle a bit player in a larger game of cat-and-mouse and military confrontations.

It'd be great to see her fleshed out alongside Mon Mothma and other top brass. Not a token "strong women" who shouts a few lines but someone working to make the galaxy a safer place.

It'd be a great opportunity to jettison really outdated genre conventions of a "Bond girl" or "femme fatale" and present someone who's planning to overthrow the Emperor.

Anyone want to see that movie?

Katarn had no force powers in dark forces I. They introduced that in the second one, but jedi are cool, and they had to up the stakes. I'd be down for it, but doubt it would happen.

Does anyone know why they stopped making these games? They were well received and made money as far as I know.

That's one of the best part about Dark Forces: no force, no X-wings. It's Star Wars, as told from the underbelly and the scoundrels.

Dark Forces and Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight were developed and published by Lucasarts. Jedi Outcast and its sequel Jedi Academy were developed by Raven Software (Star Trek Elite Force, Hexen, Call of Duty Multiplayer), Marvel Ultimate Alliance).

I don't know why they cancelled. The console versions underperformed due to a third-party dev doing the port. Lots of bugginess compared to PC. This was back when people though the PC was becoming irrelevant.

It also suffered under mid-to-late 2000s Lucasarts, which really lost direction amidst all the prequel films. Lots of management changes, cancelled projects, etc.

@darrenkitlor I love the fact that you've brought this up, given that the photo in your avatar makes you look a bit like Kyle Katarn!

Well.... it's more like Doom in the Star Wars universe, if I'm honest. I think the Force powers would have been too tricky to reproduce in the original game! (emperor)

Wow, how old is he? 12? Even with a beard, I don't think he'd make a convincing Katarn.

Totally influenced me growing up. I modded Dark Forces and Jedi Knight back in the day.

Coincidentally, Hexen (Fantasy Doom) was made just prior by the company that went on to do Jedi Outcast.

Let's not forget that Kyle fights Bob's Fett.

Kyle's clean shaven but pudgier in dark forces.

Trying to remember because it's been a while, the first level was stealing the Death Star plans, did it take the rest of the game before the plans ended up in Leia's possession?

He's like late 20s early 30s. Besides I said "Kyle Katarn" with quotes meaning a character based on his archetype.

I think it's just that first level. However, there's a lot left in the dark, especially Jan Ors.

I would love for this to happen. They can rewrite the story and not allow Kyle to become a jedi at any point later. Hell, I don't mind if he dies getting the plans out to the rebels. It would be amazing to see this happen.
