we haven't had any fighting in space (chronologically) since ROTJ.

JJ move the deathstar trench run into a planet base, and m had Xwings over a lake.

I'm really hoping we see some tie fighter and Xwing, y wing, and U wing battles.

It's going to be very upsetting if two "Star Wars" movies in a row fail to include space battles.

I suppose that would be true if that is the most important thing about a Star Wars movie to you.

I am enjoying seeing things we haven't seen before, like air combat in atmosphere and a ground battle other than Hoth and Endor.

I agree with @Laggamaroo here - it's noticeable, but not that upsetting. Seeing how battles are "evolving" in a sense is a cool thing to experience. Even if there aren't any in R1, I'm sure there will be some space battles in Episode VIII.

I guess I don't have a particular opinion on the matter. Yeah, it's noticeable that there aren't as many space battles, but at the same time, I kind of liked the change of aesthetic that occurred when they were brought elsewhere. If Starkiller Base's trench run had been in space, for example, that would have made the similarity to ANH all the more glaring.

I get the feeling Rogue One will include some kind of space battle. I don't think it will concern me too much unless we get through Ep. 8 without one.

Well we already got atmospheric battle in ROTS but the entire point of star wars is STAR - WARS so a space battle of some sort snt out of the question .

Which part had atmospheric battles again...? I honestly can't remember...there was the opening dogfight (which I thought took place about Courscant), the attack on Greivous in Utapau (which we see transport ships), and Order 66, which was more of a clip than a good fight (but I see your point).

I'm ready for another good space battle as well but I have enjoyed the "in atmosphere" stuff of TFA and the trailer for R1 looks good seeing the X-wings in a ground support role.

I will say it's a little strange seeing a Star Destroyer in atmosphere though in the R1 trailer. It looks cool but just seems out of place. I just don't see the point of it. In the OT, I assumed there were drop ships that ferried the ground combat troops down to Hoth as we never see a SD in atmosphere. However, in the PT, we see the Republic Cruisers landing to deploy troops. However, I don't see the SD as being designed to land on a planet! I see them staying in orbit to provide orbital bombardment in support of a ground operation.

The entire opening scene was an atmospheric space battle .

I don't really mind the lack of space battles so far. I'm with @Bandini and I am enjoying see something new and different. However, we are going to be seeing a lot of SW movies over the next decade and I'm sure we will see space battles again.

The lack of space battles doesn't bother me at all, although I'm a big fan of the space battle in Star Wars and ROTJ. Maybe we won't even get any space battle in R1 or EPVIII, but there will be a BIG space battle in EPIX for sure.

The Force Awakens did have a space battle, you know.

So, if the movie does not have a space battle, lucasfilm is lost?

I'm hoping the rumours are true of a big space battle in Episode 8 but I only want to see one in RO if it fits with the story and there's a good chance it won't.

I don't want to spoil, but those rumours are true. A battle with a narrative and tactical structure, just like the ones in A New Hope, Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Not like Revenge of the Sith. So if you loved the battle in Return of the Jedi, and especially the battles in the reboot version of Battlestar Galactica ;) [wink wink wink] you are really going to love the space battle in episode 8.

As for Rogue One, it all depends on how literally they are going to take the first paragraph of the opening scroll to A New Hope

It is a period of civil war.
    Rebel spaceships, striking
from a hidden base, have won
    their first victory against
    the evil Galactic Empire.

    During the battle, Rebel
    spies managed to steal secret
    plans to the Empire's
    ultimate weapon, the DEATH
    STAR, an armored space
    station with enough power
    to destroy an entire planet.

I dont care for space battles, but i do care for great characters,so TFA was excellent to me and is posible RO will be too.
TPM has a weak spacebattle with Anakin screaming "this is pod race...", and not to mention the worst spacebattle of all saga: Coruscant.

The battle of coruscant was the "background-space battle" of which not a single viewer knew what was actually happening. It had neither narrative nor structure save the fact that Anakin and Obi Wan were flying towards Grievous ship. It is absolutely the worst space battle in the saga; I agree. The opening shot was cool, the rest was redundant.

    (kylo ren) You're so right..

    And "Space Battle" in 1977:

    And "Space Battle" in 1999:

    And 2002:

Now, when TCW came around that changed. I seemed like nearly every episode Anakin was charging in with 3 star destroyers. Filloni really went big on capital warship fights.

But we have gone without a big crazy space battle in two movies before. That's the formula: one big space fight in every Trilogy. Just one. And it George Lucas's formula, not JJs. Would I personally like them to do more.. yeah, I would. But, I think having the one.. kinda makes it more special.

In his latest article, Anthony Breznican said about Felicity Jones:

Considering that they finished reshoots only a month ago so space VFX isn't done, that Edwards said something along the lines of 'wait and see' when asked the same question and this above, I'd say we will see some.

    After all:

One ship getting blown out of the sky while trying to escape = space-battle?
