I wouldn’t compare these two just in my opinion considering how they take place in very different times and stress very different importances within Star Wars. But, I did like R1 better just because I liked the theme and when it took place. But Solo was also such a good film as it expanded on some of the characters we already know and love, but it also introduced us to many new characters and planets and whatnot. Its really hard to choose. :)

    I really like both.

Solo was the last one that I rewatched on bluray so I am more inclined to vote for it.

    Solo, hands down.

Solo has the better music, more fleshed out characters, and is overall more fun than Rogue One is. That isn't to say Rogue One is bad - Krennic was a nice change of pace in terms of villainy, and the action scenes are far better in Rogue One than in Solo. But action scenes aren't the only feature of a movie (unless it's something like The Raid: Redemption...but even that has the score, the tension, and the brotherhood).

Solo also works best as a standalone. Yes, it explains aspects of a character's backstory, but it's not relevant to the plot at all. And that's what makes it great. I can watch this movie knowing who Han is beforehand, or I can watch it as a first Star Wars movie, and it works out just fine. Due to it's near episodic nature, it also works great as a launching point for other stories. #MakeSolo2Happen anyone?

Rogue One, despite being a prequel to ANH, almost depends on its audience knowing how the story is going to go (or at least it banks on the audience being willing to watch the direct continuation) - we're expected to know about Mustafar and Vader, and be shocked (yet unsurprised) about the scene of him in a bacta tank. We're supposed to know who Senator Organa is talking about when he mentions being able to trust his ally "with his life" and the tragic foreshadowing involved in that declaration. There's a sort of defeating tension with the characters too - will they live, or will they die? And yet, many fans believed they knew the answer to that question when ANH had no reference of them before (as if that ever stopped Lucasfilm from introducing things) question. The answer itself left very little room for a sequel involving these exact characters or their history.

So...yeah, Solo wins. But I also like Solo better than Rogue One, so my stance isn't that surprising!

Rogue One is the slightly better stand alone film but I prefer SOLO, it was a fun adventure of my favourite character and I've rewatched SOLO far more than I have R1.

Rogue One all the way. It has fresh, new and unique characters. The cast is high class. The look of the movie is beyond beautiful. The third act has one of the best space battles. The ending with Cassian and Jyn is one of the most tragic and emotional endings of all Disney sw movies.

I'm still confused why LF couldn't top that look with the follow-up movies. R1 is still the most beautiful SW movie, at least visually. TLJ was also quite beautiful, but TFA, TROS and especially SOLO looked kinda ugly in comparison. I'm glad that the team of R1 works on Mando.

Man, I'm excited for the Cassian show, especially if it looks and sounds like R1. The sound design of R1 is quite astonishing too.

For me Rogue One definitely. It was a creative twist on how the Rebels got the plans, albeit the first half of the movie and the big cast made it hard to make proper connections with all and it tried to do a lot of lifting in series of shots from here in there, but it was interesting to watch.

With Solo, it was basically a visual companion to all we know about Solo from both canon and nods to Legends:
    – Wanting to be best pilot.
    – Working for/Cadet of Empire
    – Meeting Chewbacca and their debt
    – Meeting Lando and winning Falcon in cards later
    – Kessel Run

There were interesting bits and pieces like Solo being literally solo, Falcon's navcomputer origins etc.
But pretty much the movie showed me in a canon way/killing possible fantasies everything I already knew about Han intertwinned with small and inconsequential heist, to support unknown group of Rebels.
Enfys Nest was visually interesting and marketed as mysterious big bad, but it didn't do much for me in the end.

The movie is OK and fun, but if I have to pick the whole package, together with soundtrack and emulating the 70s feel, it's RO.

You know, it's kinda interesting. If I'd been locked in a room for the last decade, then immediately shown Rogue One and Solo and told one of them would get a spinoff TV show... I would not have guessed which correctly.

Well, technically... Lando is coming, but I do get your point. Who would have thought Cassian Andor would be the focus of such a massive hit TV series. Donald Glover could very well pull off a spectacular series as well, I really hope this gets back on and stays on track very soon.

As far as these movies, it's kinda like asking what's better, pepperoni pizza or leather car seats? I love them both and they serve very different needs in my life.

True, I wasn't even thinking about Lando, necessarily, but you're right.

I just think in general, the Crimson Dawn story or the Han and Jabba story are begging to be covered in something like this.

But hey, Andor was great! Can't complain about that.

Yeah... While I was actually hyped for Lando show way more than for Solo movie, I remember the announcement of Andor left me asking: Why?
But it was my prejudice based on The Mandalorian and the whole slate of projects, where of course I was most interested in Obi-Wan and Andor in RO was done as far as my concerns were, as I am not really a fan of origin stories and seeing all the dialogue about character's background being turned into a cinematic realization – while not as bad in Gotham's case, as a huge Batman fan, I ignore the poor TV shows about Batman without Batman or before Batman, where you see his parents die for milionth time and them trying hard to be as cool as the late Batman stories, without the cool, so they are ramping it up and it ends up being a weird and nonsensical mix, while nobody is touching the real history where Bruce travels the world to learn from the best. The best approach so far was probably only in Young Indiana Jones and I don't remember the show at all, as it ran on TV here like 25 years ago.
And thank god Andor was in pre-production during such a time, because something must have happened behind the scenes in LFL later.
Not only is the show great beyond my initial expectations, it's IMHO the best SW series they pulled off from all standpoints and it looks so good.
I am still baffled by Obi, Boba and Mando S3.

Um . . . I think "Solo" is slightly better. As much as I had enjoyed "Rogue One", I thought the movie's first 15 minutes or so were rushed. And I found the actual plan to steal the Death Star plans a bit convoluted . . . like Luke's plan to rescue Han in "Return of the Jedi". Using the digital faces for Tarkin and Leia didn't help. I also thought "Solo" was more tightly and better written.

Are we going to discuss the Disney Plus shows as well? Frankly, I think "Obi-Wan Kenobi" was the best production, although I found the narrative for Episode Four a bit unnecessary. Both Seasons One and Three of "The Mandalorian" were flawed. Having two stand alone episodes about Din Djarin in "The Book of Boba Fett" was a wrong move in my eyes. "Asoka" is a bit boring after four episodes. And I believe "Andor" had required a good deal of more tighter writing and less focus on Mon Mothma. Hopefully, Season Two is better.

I found Solo more enjoyable, Rogue One felt like a bunch of war movie tropes with Star Wars makeup. And the Jyn speeches get annoying.
