A few days ago, we happened to have a conversation with someone in the know about certain aspects of Rogue One. While we were talking about the typical Star Wars opening crawls, the source (whom we consider to be extremely credible) revealed to us that Rogue One actually opens in a way 'different than the classic Star Wars films'...

The evidence has been clear for some time now that Rogue One will not be a 'regular' Star Wars movie. People involved with the project have discussed many times already that they are taking a different approach with it, so it may not even be that much of a surprise to Star Wars fans that Rogue One will lack the traditional opening that we associate with the saga films (Episodes I-IX).

You may recall that back in mid July, ET got an exclusive scoop straight from Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and director Gareth Edwards wherein Kennedy mentioned that they wanted the film to have a different feel compared to the saga films:

Edwards spoke about the differences between Rogue One and the other films but added his thoughts on the crawl as well. Edwards said:

So,as you can see, Kennedy and Edwards have dropped some heavy hints about the possibility that Rogue One might not use the traditional Star Wars crawl (although by that time they still hadn't made the final decision on whether or not to use it). However, after our conversation yesterday, we are fully confident that we won't see the crawl in Rogue One. Our source was crystal clear that the film 'does not' use the traditional Star Wars crawl and that the film's introduction of the story to the audience differs from the classic films in the series.

Tell us your thoughts in the comments below. Do you approve the decision to drop the crawl from Rogue One?

I do not approve. The Star Wars crawl is a Star Wars "trademark" of sorts, and while it is a regular for the saga films, it is easily adaptable to the anthology by adding "A Star Wars Story" to the crawl header. The deletion of the crawl for the anthology films will seemingly "cheapen" these films, in my opinion....again, I do not approve.

I think it's a bad idea too. It won't feel right that a Star Wars movie has no opening crawl. I'm very disappointed.

They know best if they need some info out before the first scene starts. If they don't need it ok, still better then a crawl just for the sake of tradition.

I'm sure a relevant crawl could have been made even if it was short in nature. I'm all for a different feel and tone. I was all for Garreth Edwards after seeing his very dark Godzilla movie in 2014. However there are some things that are unique about a star wars movie. none are bigger than an opening crawl.

The crawl is a nice tradition, but it doesn't say anything about the quality of the movie. With or without the crawl, Rogue One has equal chance of being the greatest SW movie or the greatest miss in the history of the franchise. I personally think it will be a good movie, nothing more and nothing less. The personal taste will put it higher or lower on the scale.

I think we have to accept that Star Wars is a changing galaxy. Isn't that what we want? Something new and exciting. We also have to accept that not every swing they make will hit the mark - even the Creator himself hadn't managed that. But, in my book, it is better if they try something new, even baby steps like no crawl. We have a little over month and a half to see the results. Patience, young padawans, patience. :)

I like it. I`m very interested in how it will feel with the "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" title card alone.

The movie is probably not going to open with an action sequence either, but with Krennic taking Galen.

Wow. I honestly don't know how I feel about it. Nothing fires me up like seeing the traditional title card and crawl when watching a Star Wars film for the first time or for the thousandth time. However, I kind of think that it's more special when it's at the beginning of the episodic films, and that we really don't NEED one at the start of Rogue One. But it'll definitely feel very strange without it. I don't think I'll really know how or if it effects the movie until I'm in my seat at my first showing.

Its Star Wars, it should have an opening crawl.

I kinda understand what Kathleen Kennedy is goin for. I mean we are getting the prequel book for it as well as Rebels I don't see what other backstory they could tell without spoiling those in the crawl. I think LucasFilm and Disney know what their doing on this film regardless.

I would prefer a crawl but I will withhold judgment until I see the movie. My biggest question is, are we going to get a long time ago in a galaxy far far away?

I'm assuming we will but the article makes no reference to that part. It won't be Star Wars without that.

I hope it opens similar to something like a battle from Saving Private Ryan .

I think this is fantastic news. The whole point of having an anthology (or spinoff) film is to make Star Wars different from what we normally perceive as a Star Wars film. Rogue One seems to be doing just that: non-Skywalker story, "Saving Private Ryan" feel, no John Williams music, flashbacks, and now no opening crawl.

If true, I'm happy with this. All Star Wars films are special; but for me, the saga films are more special. The crawl and the fanfares are for those films - the "real" Star Wars films, if you will. I'm not trying to characterize Rogue One as not a real Star Wars film, but hopefully you catch my meaning. Let's keep those special Star Wars moments to the core story, and let the stand-alones do what they will. I think giving them that freedom will allow them to blaze their own trail even more.

I already threw in my say into the comments on the news story, I think it's a good idea to not chain new film makers in needing this crawl, let them do what is best for their movie. But I've been thinking about what we've seen of Rogue One so far, and would a crawl even work? Because we know there is some kind of "flash back" or time jump segment that happens presumably early in the movie with mini Jyn Erso.

Does that mean if there was a crawl that it would have to explain what's going on in that time when the empire just rose to power, rebels aren't really a thing, and the death star is pretty much still in major construction? Or would the crawl be for the rest of the movie and we just have an awkward moment when none of that stuff is true in that segment? The more I think about it, the less a crawl might work for this movie unless it's very vague about "The Empire is super evil. They're totally planning to build a killing laser, maybe a rebel alliance will form to stop them?"

That's why I think Rogue One is going to be better than Episode 7. it is taking creative risks and is not playing it safe at all, and that's what Star Wars needs. As much as I love Episode 7 but it kinda played it safe creatively, regardless of similarities to ANH. It will also bring people I n who aren't SW fans but are action and war movie fans which is awesome.
