Greetings die hards. With the release of Rogue One, I can't help but wonder, will stand alones one day take over as the main star wars franchise staple? Is the inception of Rogue One the signal of a new era in the star wars franchise universe? Was this Disney's plan all along? Is the introduction of spin offs Lucasfilm's way of telling us that they know one day the Skywalker saga will have to come to a close and stand alones will be the new star wars status quo? As we all know, the star wars universe is quite vast with long lasting creative elbow room. How long can a saga last before it becomes exhausted and something new is in need to take it's place?
I honestly don't know. I don't think it's far fetched to imagine a star wars Skywalker saga film in the near future (say 10 11 12 and say 30 years from now. I'm opened minded to the thought of new generations of star wars fanatics being enthralled and imagining what the next star wars movie will reveal outside of the Skywalker realm.

I absolutely love Rogue 1 and have been a fan of the concept from the very first announcement. That said, I am cautiously optimistic about the Han Solo movie, every news bit so far has been great, and I really enjoyed the Han Solo Trilogy from the old EU but I believe they need to get away from the main storyline (R1) or the main time period (HS) for the "Stories" to continue to matter, otherwise there is the risk of convoluting and retconning to much out of the OT.

I would suggest going for a different era (old republic) or focusing specifically in a new planet/politics (Mandalorians)

I hope they do. I absolutely loved The Force Awakens, together with ESB my favourite SW movie. However I do think and hope that the Skywalker Saga gets concluded after IX. The Saga should end with an epic third act of which TFA is just the first part. They can make as many standalone and mini-sagas they like after IX, but no continuation of the Skywalker story.

Rogue One is definitely a very good start for the spinoffs. Imo its much better than TFA. However, the concept of R1 has always been a good one, leaving the possibility for a great movie, but im not really sure if the Han Solo or the other flicks will have similar potential...

I am begrudgingly ok with an end of the Skywalker story (only because I've seen how it's pigeon holed the story line from expanding to different angles and people). I would however like to see a continuation of the Jedi and Dark Side Force Users with a twist.

What twist? If there is a way for them to somehow bring the Knights of the Fallen Empire into the Episodic Star Wars series... man would that ever add room for expansion and break up the binary light vs good battle, and turn it into a 3 way battle (since they wouldn't be with the Jedi or the Sith or the FO or the remnant of the Republic). There are so many directions they could go with that that would take the focus off Skywalker lineage that you wouldn't have to destroy the Skywalker lineage, it could just be a piece of a larger story.

Star Wars will die on its arse if it continues to follow the limited number of Skywalkers or infinite Death Star superweapon rebuilds. LFL has no choice other than to make new stories. (or do reboots of old episodes - again!)

    ;)

I have been a Star Wars fan since I was 7 years old, and I remember Lucas saying that there are 12 films in the saga so before I die I want to see all 12 films. I love Lucas, he has given me great joy with this franchise. I was sad when Lucas had initially said no films after ROTJ (I remember the dark times but for some reason my gut told me otherwise). I was happy to find anything Star Wars. The books, the animated series, so as a huge fan, and Kennedy at the helm, moving forward. So far, so good, no complaints. I really liked TFA, and now I love RO, so I look forward to future standalone, as well as the saga films. I heard that Kennedy has a good track record in terms of producing films so if they continue the Skywalker saga I trust her judgement. And after seeing RO, I don't think the Han Solo film will fail, I'm very optimistic that they will succeed. Now films are subjective, so I understand that ppl might not like a particular film, but I hope that they are all successful in the box office to continue on.

The onus is definitely on The Ocho right now. Rian Johnson has to deliver, and deliver big. And my fear is that he's working with the lamest plot bomb in movie history. And if The Ocho doesn't deliver.. and Han Solo, the first star wars film in 13 years with a male lead, does.. its going to get interesting.

Well Kathleen Kennedy has stated multiple times that star wars itself is mainly about the skywalkrs, which is the point of star wars. spinoffs are fine but eventually they will have limited options to mine from that aren't skywalkers and popular. I'd say realistically the next trilogy would be more like 11-15 years from now.

And that lame plot bomb is? Abrams and Kasdan put down a beautiful movie with tremendous characters which is universally loved by fan and non-fan alike. Only a tiny radical minority dislikes it. Rian Johnson has quite an easy job.

I'd like to get a spinoff trilogy or two before we get 10-12. I like the idea of the saga films being generational.

I think we'll probably get some sort of shift after the sequel trilogy is over. Not sure if that means getting a new trilogy set in a different time period, or just a series of interconnected, Marvel-style movies. Or, god forbid, maybe they'll just stop making films (that's not sarcasm, btw, I'm loving what Disney has done so far). But I don't think we'll ever get to the point where every film is entirely standalone. I think, as good as Rogue One was, the franchise would run out of steam pretty fast that way.

That being said, I'm much more looking forward to Ep 8 than the Han movie. I'm not totally sure why, but I really just don't like the idea of a Han movie right now. Like, I'm really against it. But this time last year I thought the same thing about Rogue One until we got a trailer, so I guess I could be won over.

I think they should start a new saga after SW9, no need to count it as ep.10 as it is no longer about the Skywalker's family, it may take place a hundred years later........

I think the Skywalker story will eventually have to evolve to continue but it is large galaxy to draw movie inspirations from. I would love to see something from the old republic era. They would have a lot of freedom there.

Agreed. And I'm all for something in the Old Republic timeline. They may conclude the Skywalker Saga but I can see them doing a prequel type film that's between ROTJ and TFA, much like RO is to ANH.

I'm 100% on your side, but someone pointed out to me that they aren't likely to do it until the Old republic MMO shuts down. I doubt they'd want two continuities going at the same time in the old republic era.

I'm hoping we learn more in April at celebration about post EP 9 plans. We only know about the next 3 films :S.

Indeed it is. But I keep thinking about @King3000 and his 'letter' to LFL. R1 hit just about everything on that checklist.. and it's in orbit with ESB. That's impressive.. most impressive..
Also.. I haven't heard any of the "I don't understand it" whining I was practically bombarded with following TFA. Look at the user reviews on IMDB. Remember that flash mob of lucas loving edgelords that blockaded any positive reviews? Nowhere to be found with R1. First review is 10/10. First page is 10s,9s,8s, and one 7. Nedalien17 on YT made a (deceptive) argument for why TFA was junk; his R1 video is nothing more than naked butthurt. It's glorious to listen to his tears.
So, yeah, I think Looper is going to give us a good movie. But the onus is on him to make a great movie.. go for Empire great. Because anything less is going to feel like a step down.. and all the negativity that comes with it.
The lame plot bomb I'm referring to is that they will surprise us all with Rey being Luke Skywalker’s daughter. I really hope they do something more interesting, but i'm..

I've never thought Rey was Luke's daughter.. have a thread about it floating around here somewhere lol. So yeah, if it turns out she is I would think that's pretty lame, given what we DO know about Luke.. Jedi Master, etc..

But I'm confident "Looper" will hit it out of the park too. As impressive as RO was, I think it sets us up for an incredible sequel in Episode VIII.. hope we get a Title soon!

I think they will probably go with Rey is Luke's daughter, but part of me hopes that's not the case (as long as they don't try and do the whole, "no, you are MY father" thing that rumor a few months ago said).

As for titles, I'd bet we won't see a title until April which is when we will probably get the first teaser trailer. Until then I'm gonna enjoy the ride that is Rogue One.
