I know these type of threads are usually created by people who love certain characters, but I'm gonna be real honest, I find her insufferable right now, and I'm really curious what JJ might do, if he can do anything, to make me care about this character.

Why don't I like her? She completely derails Finn's arc, and is just all over the place with her morals. She starts The Last Jedi talking about how the Resistence is bigger than one person, and convincing Finn not to desert, but then at the end of the film she does the most selfish action possible. She jeopardized the entire Resistance, and totally hero blocked Finn, just so she could get a quick smooch in. I would have been sad to see Finn go, but I would have at least been satisfied if he went out like a hero. What's more, it's like she totally forced herself on Finn! I mean Finn doesn't even seem like he knows where that kiss came from!

So yea... JJ is gonna have to pull some major plays with this character for me not to hate her. Thoughts? Speculation?

I cannot say I disliked Rose and seeing it look like her and Finn going to be a romantic couple is fine with me.

Kelly Marie Tran as an actress seems to have decent chops and I liked seeing someone Resistance related other than Poe being highlighted such as Rose and Holdo.

I took Rose's action a bit different than you did I think.

Finn, like pretty much every other character in this movie, are dealing with purging the failures of the previous generation. Much like Kylo Ren, Finn is lashing out in anger against those who raised him and failed him. Rose brings him back from the brink by showing him the path of the light is to try and save what you care about, not destroy what you hate. He may not be a Jedi, but he still has to play by the same rules to stay on the right path.

And besides, there's no way Finn crashing that one ship into the cannon was gonna save the rebels. He was trying to martyr himself for this new cause, but unnecessarily. Rose was showing him that.

There are definitely some writing/character issues with Rose, but I do feel like Finn couldn't save anyone by crashing into the cannon. I feel like Rose, having just lost her sister, didn't want to see another lost (especially when it wouldn't have worked). This was actually one of my favorite Rose moments. (Not the kiss though, too soon.)

Rose is more tolerable when you view the film as her, not being Finn's colleague, but her being Finn's mentor. Like Luke is to Rey and Leia is to Poe.

Each trying to teach the main heroes valuable lessons, so they can as Yoda says, grow beyond them.

Also notice that each main hero gets pushed out the way in third Act, by a sacrifice from people trying to teach them.

Leia knocks out Poe. And she later explains to Poe what Holdo was trying to do. Holdo then makes the ultimate sacrifice to allow Poe and the others to escape. Holdo "took" away Poe's big hero moment.

Rather than letting Rey confront Kylo again on Crait. Luke goes to save the Resistance by confronting Kylo, to allow the resistance to escape. Using up his life Force in the process. A lot of fans thought Rey, as the main hero, should have had the film's final showdown. Rey senses that Luke died with peace and purpose.

Then you had Finn, who as you said, had his big hero moment "taken" away by Rose,so he wouldn't die.

It's no coincidence, that the writers had the three main heroes, "pushed" aside in the third act. So they could learn from these sacrifices, grow, and come out better in Episode IX.

Also notice that each sacrificed person kind of acknowledges the main heroes.

Holdo: "I like him." Referring to unconscious Poe.

Luke: "I will not be the Last Jedi." Talking about Rey to Kylo.

And Rose does the kiss to Finn.

I'm sure if Poe heard Holdo say that about him. Or even if Rey heard Luke refer to her as that. They'd both be as shocked as when Finn received the kiss.

Edit: actually it's the fourth act I'm talking about. TLJ is so long, it has 4.

Is Rose confirmed for Episode IX? I can't imagine just dropping her altogether, but I haven't found any confirmation that she'll be back either. Does anyone know?

    Write her out.

Episode IX will be the ST's last chance to show Rey, Finn and Poe fight in an adventure together.

Rose needs to be kept for Episode IX. She is essential for the survival of the Rebellion. With the Millennium Falcon alone in space containing all the remaining members of the Rebellion in it, precious supplies like fuel, power and food will be scarce and heavily rationed. Rose's and Finn's knowledge of cleaning pipes is also an invaluable asset. Eventually, the Falcon's food will all be gone. Rose will self-sacrifice herself "for the love of her new friends" and will be eaten by the hungry and grateful Rebels. However, Rose will exist after her death, as her fatty oils will be saved in jars, to be used as lubricant in the Falcon's sliding doors mechanisms and droid joint grease.

The character of Rose is one of the nitpicks i have about this movie...not on the level that others hate jar jar binks (i love him for nostalgic reasons) but i still do not feel positively about her.

A couple people have commented on my original comment, and I feel like I have to say I've mellowed over the character after seeing the film a few more times. I can see her plot line more clearly, and she doesn't come off as much of a hypocrite as I initially interpreted. JJ is still going to have to do more to endear me to this character, but I don't outright dislike her anymore.

Sadly, Rose didn't make it. The Resistance crew tried their best to save her, but the medkit on the Falcon was expired.

I felt like the actress herself was likeable, but the way she was written she was a f**king idiot. I'd say what's done is done, have her appear in IX, but do a better job with her. No more "1% suck, war profiteering sucks, animal abuse sucks, slavery is fine" political themes. I don't want to see any more of that garbage. Let her be part of the fight, but without any kind of character arc for herself. The character arcs should be reserved for the major characters set up in TFA. Rose should just be window dressing in IX.

I'd honestly be fine if she was never even mentioned in 9. Ya know, throw in a line that she was needed in other parts of the galaxy....

Nothing against the actress, just the horrible character writing.

I feel bad that people are hating on character and actress on account of some lousy lines, but there was no need for the forced political exposition (especially 10 minutes after just meeting her.) I don't dislike the character but I do dislike those specific lines (just didn't work for a variety of reasons), and wish the time was spent on developing her character in other ways.

Completely agree with you. I couldn't stand the political commentary thrown in there by Rose, but I found the actress likeable and I think the character has potential if written well.

If u look at the nitty gritty, most of the nu guyz weren't needed. Haldo could of bin Ackbar. Poe could of bin in Rose's place.

I don't want anybody new in 9, including a Snoke hidden aprentist. Just bring back the Guavian Death Gang, KanjiKlub or the KoR.

You could say the same about Lando in ESB.

We were going to get new characters in TLJ regardless.

I think Finn's mentor should have been Maz Kanata. Such a great character completely underused in TLJ. Maz would have offered deeper wisdom than Rose. For starters Maz had Finn all sussed out in TFA: "the eyes of a person who wants to run". Also, that hideous, contrived romance we had to endure in TLJ would not have been a goer, due to age difference obviously... and well... also because Maz's is Chewbacca's lol.

That's an interesting take on it! And it would have gone nicely with the older/younger teams we saw in TLJ (which I really enjoyed). Rey/Luke, Poe/Leia, and then if we had Finn with a grandmother like figure. Poor Finn's barely had any time to adjust to real society outside the empire. He needs a guiding older figure more than anyone. Maz would be perfect. I'd like to see her in action and I'm getting a little tired of the "character x is old so they have nothing else to do/they're done". I'm sure we all have plenty of relatives over 60 who would object to that...

Sidenote: Not a Rose hater, but there were some definite issues with that scene and character development. It's interesting to read different solutions to the scene. I do think Rose has potential to work as a character, but introducing her and giving her the mentor role just seemed odd. She was too young and too quickly introduced.

    @HothLeia @Kylocity
Believe me. I was the main one that wanted Maz to mentor Finn after TFA.

That was what my very first post was about here on the cantina forum. (Look it up).

But it looks like Rose was created, because each "mentor" is where the main characters are headed.

Poe will be the head of the resistance/ rebellion like Leia was.

Rey will be the the last living Jedi Master like Luke was.

Unless Finn was going to be a space pirate bartender (which is kind of cool), then I can see why they wouldn't use Maz.

Since they decided Finn's direction is being a member of the resistance, then they created that "mentor" for him that's in the Resistance.
