Rose Tico in Ep 9

Rose's character should have been responsible to recruit the fleet for the battle of Exogol.

In TLJ she was the one who taught Finn the difference between the Resistance and the FO. She told him why the FO was destined to fail.

Her journey from an insecure mechanic to an eloquently diplomatic (who comvinces people to join the final fight) would have been a great character arc. Furthermore it would have made sense if you look at the previous movie.

Now we have her as an extra with some exposition lines. And even worse, the appearance of the Resistance fleet at the ending feels unearned.

 

Babu Frik has nearly the same screen time as Luke Skywalker..we needed a lot more Pryde and less Jannah and Zorii.

 

I disagree. Lando was the commander of the Rebel fleet in the Battle of Endor and the person who blew up the second Death Star. Recruiting an armada to fight a Sith fleet with 10,000 times the firepower of the FO would be always a very long shot, but Lando, because of his past history in the Old War, would be the person most likely to succeed in doing it. Certainly, his odds would be much better than those of a mechanics nobody like Rose. Sorry, but that is a fact.

There was a lot of Pryde in the movie and Jannah is probably one of the most interesting new characters in the ST. I wish the Finn/Jannah subplot had been done in Episode VIII instead of the Rose/Finn arc. That way, Finn would have figured out earlier that he was force sensitive and would have established an earlier connection with a band of former stormtroopers. Those subplots could have been further developed then on a bigger scale in Episode IX.

 

Yes, but in the movie itself it wasn't set up. Lando kinda just appeared. It's one of the weakest "savior" moments I've ever seen. Mainly because it's not earned.

Just look at LOTR to see how it's done correctly. It's set up from the very beginning of the second movie that Gandalf is trying to get help. He even promised when he's coming back. Then the battle happens and as all hope ist lost we are reminded of the promise Gandalf made. He appears with an army and saves the day. This feels earned.

So, my criticism here isn't really that Rose should have fulfill that part but that this moment of the fleet arriving should have been made more meaningful in the context of the story.

 

Rose deserved way more screen-time than she got in the movie. I was looking forward to seeing her on more adventures with Finn and hearing the wonderful theme John Williams made for her in The Last Jedi.

 

Debunking baseless accusations isn't "doing damage control" because there's no damage to control.

 

So you haven't seen the social media "outrage" over Rose's demotion? The director of Crazy Rich Asians wanting justice in the form of a Rose Tico series?

The very fact that Terrio had to come out and say something speaks to this. Also, I think you take things perhaps a little too much at face value. Read between the lines man.

 

I'm aware of the backlash; I just reject the notion that it has legitimacy, particularly in light of Chris Terrio addressing it.

 

Well, there's no Rose Tico fanbase either, like take YouTube for example- to this day there are five (!) tribute videos on that character, and frankly speaking these 5 are not that well made and have not more than 4000 clicks with 40 dislikes and 90 likes. I think that speaks for itself, don't you agree?
