Rose Tico in Ep 9

I like Rose a lot. She reminds me of my wife. She helps Finn grow into a better person, stops Finn when he's about to do something Stupid. And my wife is the handy one and I'm a goofy soldier. But, she also embodies one of my greatest fears for my wife. Rose has no character without Finn. She doesn't talk to people besides Finn unless Finn is also talking to them. She has no scenes without Finn. Everything she does involves Finn. My wife has lots of hobbies and interests outside of me, but in the end a lot of her life is defined by mine. I hope Rose can get out there and do some things that are hers.

 

I see your point and yeah, especially in the case of a female character, you're right (while it would, of course, also be true in the other gender way around), but then again, I wouldn't like it, if the main characters would be again as scattered as in Episode VIII. I would prefer a lot of scenes where Rey, Finn and Poe are seen together... and of course, Rose would be "invited" to these scenes, too.

Maybe the compromise lies in a storyline, that gives Rose a few scenes for her own and with other characters than Fin, but that also let the "Big Three + Rose" have many scenes together...

Fair point, but you know people want to see Finn and Poe rocking it together. On the other hand, Finn and Rey have a lot of catching up to do, and Rose can actually serve a competent role working for the Resistance with Poe.

 

If I were writing EP 9 I would give her the same treatment Jar Jar got in AOTC + ROTS. Maybe I’d give her a scene or a couple of lines to wrap up her story, but why force a character on a public that generally doesn’t care for her?

Besides that there are so many story lines that are still wide open and so much ground to cover in general for a single film why waste any time on the Rose character?

 

Rose already has robbed enough screen time away from characters that have far more potential. Hope JJ does to Rose what Rian did to his creation Snoke.

I like Kelly Marie Tran as an actress. But Abrams needs to do a better job than Johnson in handling the Rose Tico character.

 

I like the actress, didn't like the character.

It's funny, I have a lot of issues with TLJ, but I always forget about her. She didn't ruin the movie, but as has been said, she was far from necessary and was badly written with her political views at the forefront and weird morality. With luck she's written out or dies with Leia off screen. If she's in hopefully it's in a minor role glaring at Finn because in the years that have gone by he's told her the feelings aren't mutual. That would fit with Finn's humor.

 

Lol at all the guys thinking Rose will be cut out of IX.

You exactly think we're going to go back to a one woman Star Wars movie (one of the higher criticisms of the franchise) in the sequel trilogy, especially after Holdo, Phasma and probably Leia's deaths.

I wouldn’t have a problem with Rose’s character if JJ managed to make her a bit more endearing. Sometimes she’s quite cute, what makes me believe the character has potential. I think Rian wanted to write her a bit like Hermione in Harry Potter, but he forgot to create the appropriate dynamic with finn. ( Hermione is perfectly balanced with Ron poking fun at her). Rose’s character is taken too seriously.

 

I hadn't tallied the count of remaining women, so you're probably right. However I fully expect Phasma to have survived.

When the sequels were announced to universal fanfare a few years back would anyone have predicted we would be talking about an Episode IX that is going to feature a character named Rose Tico (that the audience as a whole generally dislikes) but does not include Luke Skywalker or Han Solo?

Is anyone, but the most hardcore of fans going to care about this film? I mean be honest, is anyone playing to see Rose Tico? Star Wars may have very jumped the shark with The Last Jedi.

 

Ohhhh I'm sure we'll get at least 45 seconds of Ghost Luke!.............yeah.

 

Now that the film is out and I can watch at home Rose's character is really growing in the film. Luke is my favorite character so the film is dominated by him at first. I've waited to so long to see him again. I feel the rest of the movie suffers from "my expectations" at first, but over time the rest of the film stands out. Rose in particular is a great character and works well with Finn. That opening scene with her meeting Finn is awesome and it's touching that she's devastated by her sister's death. Then she has to deal with her hero running away.

In the end she helps Finn realize there are big things worth fighting for, but also that saving others is the highest calling.

The idea that Rose Tico is "generally disliked" is hyperbolic nonsense. Rose is the heart of The Last Jedi. She's a hero in the film. She loses her sister and save Finn.

I don't care if you didn't like her character or the film. You you think whatever you like, but quit acting like you speak for the silent majority. You don't.

Political views? Weird morality? Who knew that being against abusing orphans and animals was a political view and that saving the ones you love is weird morality? Very odd thing to say.
