So, with all the talk about Episode VIII. I haven't heard a single notion about who is scoring Rogue One officially.
Back in March it was eluded to in a TIME.COM articel below that John Williams will not score Rogue One.
    http://time.com/3753918/john-williams-star-wars-alexandre-desplat/

So where does that leave us? Will this be the first Star Wars film to not include "the Force" theme or many of the other iconic original nods?

I would assume since this film is trying to be different that perhaps a new soundtrack with nothing Star Wars related from the past will be scored? It seems to me that if they are trying to back-end connect this then you go all the way. If your going old school, you go all old school. Perhaps JW should produce with someone?

Lots of questions as the scoring for the film should begin in late October

Alexandre Desplat has said that he is scoring Rogue One. (source)

Personally, I'm excited to hear his take on it. His score for The Imitation Game is just gorgeous. Not to mention the Harry Potter films (for which he also built off John Williams' previous work), The Grand Budapest Hotel, Argo, The King's Speech... etc. He's a great talent and I suspect that he will put his own mark on the score while still retaining the spirit and essence of the foundation that JW built.

I doubt that we will hear much from the previous scores, with some possible exceptions (I wouldn't be surprised if the Imperial March showed up if the Vader rumors are true). There was little John Williams incorporation into Desplat's Deathly Hallows scores. Hell, the biggest usage of John Williams wasn't incorporated, it was straight up dropped in, using the end music from Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets for the epilogue (and I wasn't crying...YOU WERE CRYING!).
Honestly, that isn't saying much as the only thing that would pop up is Hedwig's Theme after John Williams left after Prisoner of Azkaban, so it is comparing apples to oranges.
I'm sure Desplat will do a fine job (he's not a bad composer at all. I'm glad it's him rather than Hans Zimmer or one of his many clones. Seriously, where are all the good composers, damn it!), but the biggest question will be how memorable it is (I can barely hum anything from Deathly Hallows and I can't remember anything about the score in Godzilla other than it was fine).

Alexandre Desplat is a BEAUTIFUL composer. His work is so subtly powerful (I had so many feels during both Deathly Hallows' films). He does an excellent job of weaving in familiar tunes.. Rogue One is going to be wicked.

It will probably be similar to the score they did for The Clone Wars pilot/movie. Though I do hope they make an unique orchestral score and allow the composer to do his own thing with it to suit the movie.

Desplat specifically said in interviews he didn't like the idea of building off Williams work for HP and wanted to use as little of his iconic themes as possible. So, i wouldn't expect too much JW quoting in Rogue One.

Whether that's for good or bad remains to be seen. I'm of the opinion that Desplat is a bit overrated, but I'm rooting for him to convert me. I'd like to see a great non-williams Star Wars score out of the gate, because the existence of Star Wars after John Williams exits scares me to death. I fear it won't feel the same anymore, and I'd really like this film to alleviate those fears a bit.

I don't recall much of Desplat's work, but I've heard good things from others, so I'm looking forward to it. It would be weird to have a Star Wars movie without the familiar opening theme, so I do hope that he incorporates that to some degree.

As for who I would have chosen personally, I would have loved to hear Michael Giacchino's take.

Hans Zimmer, Michael Giacchino or the guy who scores rebels. But I'm sure the guy they got will do a great job. I haven't seen the Harry Potter Films but I heard he did a great job using John Williams original score and incorporating new elements.

I though the season 1, 2 and 3 scores of Lost always had a very Star Wars sound to them, despite being minimalist in orientation.

Me too, I thought the whole score was entirely "out of place". It sometimes even tried to imitate Bear McGreary's Battlestar Galactica scores, which I think is a kind of blasphemy, because Bear McCreary did some stunning work on those scores.Though don't like McGreary's other scores...........

I didn't like the whole drum beats and all to make it feel more "edgy" and stuff .

I'm not a fan either, but I think the drums are there to make it sound militaristic, not edgy. The idea being this is Star Wars, from the soldier's point of view.

I like the concept, just not the execution.
