According to a recent rumor, there could be a new animated series set between Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels debuting next year, on top of the Rebels sequel that's also rumored to be in development.

Please keep in mind that while all of this may come to fruition, none of this information has been confirmed, so we are strictly reporting this as a rumor based on the information provided. That is in no way to discredit the sources ahead, but we want to make sure our readers understand that these series have not been acknowledged or confirmed by anyone at Lucasfilm or Disney to this point.

Back in January 2020, a team of podcasters running a show called Kessel Run Transmissions dropped an interesting story: following the completion of The Clone Wars, the next Star Wars animated series would serve as a Rebels sequel that follows Ahsoka and Sabine as they look for Ezra. Initially, the team at Kessel Run Transmissions expected this news to drop shortly after the end of The Clone Wars before going into further detail at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim; with COVID-19 affecting the Disney+ streaming plans and the Anaheim event subsequently cancelled, it's uncertain when reveals for new projects will happen, though if the show exists, it should still arrive in time for the end of the year. Star Wars animated projects are often completed well before their release, sometimes years. But even so, the team at Kessel Run Transmissions - Noah and Corey - have shared multiple teases at larger plans for Lucasfilm animation aside from just the Rebels sequel in the past few weeks:

More recently, the Kessel Run Transmissions crew are upping the ante (discussion timestamped 25:54 to 33:22) apparently, not only is there going to be a new animated series, but there will also be a second, serving as a successor to The Clone Wars. The report is that this other series is set shortly after the end of The Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith, and it will involve Rex, Ahsoka, Echo, and Wolffe. Here's what they had to say about the project:
Judging by the description, and the aforementioned tease of Echo's involvement, it seems like the series will heavily involve the Bad Batch and potentially even several of the other clones.

Corey expects the spin-off to be announced ahead of the Rebels sequel, although it will almost certainly air afterward:

Meanwhile, Noah has come forward and confirmed that the show is indeed set after Order 66, starring the Bad Batch as the main characters, with several staff that worked on The Clone Wars involved with the new series:

So with two alleged ongoing animated series, should we expect one to last longer than the other? The Kessel Run Transmissions team certainly seem to think so, as the scope of this series is more likely to have a limited run as opposed to covering the long period of time that passes between Revenge of the Sith and Rebels. Meanwhile, the Rebels sequel seems like it has the potential to go on for a longer period of time. In any case, Lucasfilm Animation has likely been very busy these past few months, so we can't wait to see what's ahead for the future of Star Wars cartoons.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels are streaming, in their entirety, on Disney+.

“…certain characters in that series, we were recently introduced to in the seventh season…”

Clearly a reference to the instantly beloved characters of Trace and Rafa. Surely then this spin-off will center on their struggles as small business owners under the increasingly stringent bureaucratic framework of Imperial commerce.

Or that ‘Seal Team 6’ crew they put together. I guess that could be fun too

As much as I love the clones, I'm not sure how much I'd want a show over their adventures versus just a book or trilogy. Granted, I'm more likely to watch the show, but they should probably balance it out with a few more non-clone characters (and I'm sure they will).

The Rebels sequel show has been rumored for a LONG time now. And yeah, I guess other than SWC, the best time to reveal it would have been Star Wars Day. And now they're stuck between a rock and a hard place. Release any news of it now, and it may seem a little...tone-deaf (ignoring the hypocrisy the haters will level at it for doing the same thing Sony and Pokemon did). On the other hand, why NOT release the info sooner than later? Lucasfilm is clearly okay with confirming shows and movies years out, so why NOT put out a trailer for a cartoon that's only a few months away at this point (granted, with how the year is going, it'll feel like a lifetime)? Either way, I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Hmm... I think this is one of those "not all Star Wars has to be for you" moments for me.

The idea of a Bad Batch spinoff sound pretty unappealing to me, but I can see how kids would like it, so... bring it on, for the new generation!

I’m not sure if I’m buying this rumor. Ahsoka and Rex are two fan favorite characters, myself included, but I don’t know about them appearing in the Rebels sequel (which is an inevitability regardless if the reported details are true or not), season two of The Mandalorian, and the potential live action Ahsoka series. That sounds like too much of a good thing to me and as far as I’m concerned, Rebels is the only Clone Wars spin-off we need. Books and comics can fill in any other gaps.

That ‘bad batch’ arc definitely had all the stink of a ‘backdoor pilot’. I don’t doubt at all that it’s at least in development. Studios like LFL usually have dozens of things in development at a time though. Doesn’t mean any of them will actually materialize. It’s a pretty safe bet they’ll do something with this cast at some point. The response was pretty positive. Animation makes the most sense.

My least favourite parts of The Clone Wars were the episodes that focused on the Clones. They aren’t different characters. They. Are. Clones. That’s the point of their entire existence. Trying to make them individual characters was boring, silly and confusing.

I just want an animated series set after the events of Jedi with Luke, Han & Leia as the leads. Is that too much to ask for? :p

It's the Star Wars buffet, man. Take what you want. Leave the rest for everyone else.

Yup, there’s already a buffet of content set during the clone wars and between episodes 3 & 4...that’s sorta my point. It’s an already oversaturated part of the timeline, where we pretty much know everything that happened already. The timeline between 6 & 7 is a 30 year barren wasteland of potential, with very little existing content.

I’m not aware of any material that deals with the early days of the Empire through the unique perspective of the clones. What happens when an entire race of beings, bred for a specific purpose, no longer has that purpose? What happens when they realize their true purpose wasn’t to defend liberty, but remove it? That’s an interesting story. One I haven’t heard before.

That’s what matters most to me anyway. I don’t care what era it happens to take place in. Tell me an interesting, thought provoking story. But that’s me. You’re free to tune out. Check back in when they get to something that interests you.
I’m sure LFL will get around to mining that expanse for every possible shred of worth, leaving nothing in the least to the imagination. For now, I’m glad they’re in no rush to dispel the mystery and only deal in broad strokes.

Lots of potential but not sure about it. I'd prefer a sequel/spin-off to Rebels

If I had a say in future Lucasfilm decisions, I’d choose to move on. The Clone Wars has been done, the stories have all been told. I too would prefer to see a spinoff of Rebels, as they left the final season in such an awkward state, story-wise.
But there is so much more to explore in animation, even a Rebels spinoff would have a been-there, done-that feel.
I’ve said it many times and I’ll say it again: an animated show about Luke’s Academy with a young Ben Solo and fleshed-out characters of other padowans would be a GREAT idea. It would have Luke Skywalker, it would show Ben’s descent to the dark side (which was never shown in films) and additional padowan characters would add weight to their deaths in TFA.
