A rumor from our friend Big Screen Leaks has suggested that Lucasfilm is moving ahead quickly on a movie for 2023, but it's not Rogue Squadron - it's apparently a different film tied to the Old Republic era.

Earlier today our pal posted on Twitter a curious rumor that a new and not yet revealed Star Wars film is planning to shoot next year. It is not tied to any of the reported film projects announced by Lucasfilm or the trades:

    https://twitter.com/bigscreenleaks/status/1456622336711483397

We reached out to the source for clarification on this interesting story, and we've learned that while Lucasfilm is moving full steam ahead on the Rogue Squadron movie from director Patty Jenkins, they are taking their time to make sure that the screenplay is just right before filming begins. The script in question, written by Matthew Robinson (The Invention of Lying, Edge of Tomorrow, and Love and Monsters), has itself received a major rewrite since it was first announced, and Jenkins herself is keeping busy with her work on a third Wonder Woman movie (which she is confirmed to direct) and a planned Amazons spin-off (which she is set to produce).

The people at Lucasfilm wanted a hiatus from annual film releases in order to be able to ensure that each project that they work on has the right amount of time in development, and they want to make sure that they don't have to rush things to make specific deadlines. Because of this, there is word that they are currently contemplating and are very close to pushing Rogue Squadron to some point in 2024. (No word on what this might mean for the currently-scheduled Avatar 3, which is slated to release that December, which seems to be the go-to window for Star Wars movies since Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm.)

However, the current December 22, 2023 release date is still set to be filled by a new Star Wars project. Thankfully, Lucasfilm have been clandestinely working on several projects as part of their theatrical and streaming slates, and word is that one that could take Rogue Squadron's current date is a story set in the days of the Old Republic. It's not clear if this is going to be a canon reimagining of the original story presented in the Tales of the Jedi comics or the BioWare RPGs, but it can be presumed it may take inspiration from those stories.

There's some precedent for Lucasfilm to be invested in the Knights of the Old Republic concept beyond the remake of the original game, which was announced earlier this year. Back in 2019, BuzzFeed reported that Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island, Altered Carbon, and Alita: Battle Angel) had been commissioned to begin work on a project related to the Old Republic era, possibly as the first film in a potential trilogy. While this story didn't seem to go anywhere for the past two years, it's likely that it's just been in the pipeline for a while and is the same project as this new movie scheduled to release in 2023.

Keep in mind that for now, this remains a rumor, and things could easily change. It's also possible that the 2023 movie could be for another project that we don't yet know about, since an Old Republic story is one potential option. We'll likely find out more in the months ahead, as Lucasfilm has already adjusted their theatrical release schedule with Indiana Jones 5 being delayed to 2023. Nonetheless, we believe that if Lucasfilm are moving quickly on the project, then it's possible that it could begin filming before the end of next year and have more than enough post-production time in 2023 to be a full-fledged cinematic Star Wars experience.

LUCASFILM PLEASE HIRE ME I HAVE A CONCEPT FOR AN OLD REPUBLIC MOVIE PLEASE!!!

    *Ahem*

An Old Republic movie would be interesting to see, and I'm down! As for Rogue Squadron being pushed...meh. I like Patty's first WW movie, and I did enjoy the second one for what it was. I'm curious about what she'll do in the third. If Rogue Squadron needs more time because of that, then time it should be given.

LOL, YouTube is gonna blow up over this rumor (and very few will credit SWNN with the rumor).

Personally, I'm slightly torn. In the long run, it doesn't really matter if RS launches in 2023 or 2024, but I was really looking forward to that movie now.

On the other hand, I guess it could be good for the franchise to get the Old Republic stuff off the ground as it might go some way to placate the vocal minority hate brigade (who seem to dominate the Old Rep crowd - although that is absolutely NOT to say that all Old Repers belong to the hate crowd, of course!).
    (duel)

The only problem is if this rumored Old Republic film turns out to be so creatively different from the comics and video games that the Old Rep lovers will hate it. I mean, they will of course not do a movie version of a video game, but borrow a few characters and beats at the most, which could lead the vocal majority to turn their hate-mongery towards the Old Republic, too. I remain optimistic, but there seems to be no winning with our fanbase these days.

PS: And if this rumor turns out to be true, I wonder if this will be the Feige-produced movie? I mean, an Old Republic film will presumably be an action-packed testosterone fest in the vein of most MCU movies, rather than the mythic melodrama that permiates the Skywalker Saga, so perhaps this is why KK invited Feige to produce a movie? Also, just thinking out loud here, bringing MCU staffers like Feige & Waldron in to do a live action SW that builds on previously published/released material makes all kind of sense - that's basically what MCU has done with the comics, right?

Then there's the Dillard/Ownes movie that we know nothing about, as well as the Waititi/Wilson-Cairns film, and, of course, the Johnson trilogy. Any of those could technically be an Old Rep project, I guess.

Do these two statements not come off as contradictory? The first one makes perfect sense to me -- take the time to get it right, lessons learned. But then the answer to the issue of "what happens to the 12/22/23 release slot" is then to fast track another new project?? Sure its been in development and whatnot, but like.... am I the only one perplexed by this??

I will never complain about more new SW, I just don't really get the reasoning here. I assume if it is Old Republic, it must be following pretty closely to the original storyline meaning all the plot points are already ironed out, making it an easy project to speed up for release.

I assume, again, if this is even true, that any "fast-tracked" movie has actually been in the work for a long time. Like, it could literally be the Benioff and Weiss project that, IIRC, was well into preproduction at the time they backed out of it, and someone else might very well have picked up that project years ago.

I'd totally forgotten about that one!

Oh wait, who was that guy who did TLJ? Maybe this is his project!!

Rian Johnson? Very unlikely since he's in the middle of shooting (or just finished shooting) Knives Out 2.

IIRC, there were some strong indications that the Benioff and Weiss project was an Old Republic thing, although that could just have been a rumor based on the fact that they did GoT and people just assumed they'd do GoT in Space next.

I will guess on Bane or Revan trilogy. Though Revan could piss a lot of people off as Angelman mentioned above. Personally, I hope for a Bane trilogy.

It's entirely possible to be shooting multiple projects. I'm more curious though to what this means for the game.

That's cool, just don't hinge bets and set yourself up for disapointment if (when) the thing turns out to be something entirely different, like an Old Rep era story that's brand new.

True, it is possible, but as I said, unlikely. These are very big projects, especially for a writer-director auteur type creator; I can't imagine Johnson doing two labor-of-love projects at the same time.

I mean I would love this, but not getting my hopes up.

Really I think adapting Knights of the Old Republic has been such an obvious thing to do, you have one of the best Star Wars stories ever written as source material which allows you to expand the story telling into one of the most interesting periods in Star Wars lore.
