After the reveal of the Star Wars: Episode VIII title, the biggest question that all fans have of course is when to expect the first footage from The Last Jedi, the highly anticipated sequel to J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In the last few weeks, numerous reports on the web claimed to know when the first footage from Rian Johnson's movie will be revealed. We've tried to contact several sources hoping to get some small hints about a possible trailer premiere date.

Rumors have been swirling for a couple weeks that a brand new trailer or TV spot for Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released this Sunday during the Superbowl. As we also shared on Twitter several days ago, a source of ours told us that there will not be any Star Wars footage during that event. We were not the first to hear something about this, even Pablo Hidalgo made a post saying that this Superbowl will be pretty much like the previous ones in terms of Star Wars coverage, meaning no coverage at all. We mainly did this clarification because multiple reports were posted online claiming to have inside information that The Last Jedi will get a TV spot during the Superbowl. This is not going to be the case.

The most logical date for the first footage from The Last Jedi has always been Star Wars Celebration Orlando, which is happening much earlier in the year than last year's event. Many people are betting that the first The Last Jedi teaser will be screened during the Star Wars fan event.

With this in mind we contacted one of our sources who shared with us an interesting tidbit. According to him, right now they are hard at work on a new Behind the Scenes reel for The Last Jedi, which will be the first footage that we will see from the movie. This means that there will be no teaser trailer before Celebration. All rumors on the web with earlier dates are not accurate, as are the reports with teaser descriptions. While a BTS reel premiering during Celebration is not surprising at all, since they did pretty much the same for The Force Awakens and Rogue One, it is interesting that we will be heading into Celebration without any TLJ footage released before. That is of course if we don't count the brief start of production video that Lucasfilm released back in February.

So, when can we expect the first The Last Jedi teaser? The following is just a speculation on our part based on the quote above from our source. First, here are all the previous trailers, teasers, and BTS reels released for the previous movies for reference:

    TFA Teaser - November 28
    TFA Teaser 2 - April 16 (Celebration)
TFA BTS - July 10 (SDCC)
    TFA Trailer - October 19

Rogue One Teaser - April 7
Rogue One BTS + Teaser (only for the attendees) - July 15 (Celebration)
Rogue One Full Trailer - August 11
Rogue One Final Trailer - October 13

As you can see from the list above, April has been the month for Star Wars teasers. TFA teaser in November is an understandable exception, since it was the first Star Wars movie we were getting in more than a decade. We have to keep in mind also that for some time now many Hollywood insiders have been hearing that a teaser for The Last Jedi has been in the works since late November 2016. So, knowing the fact from our source that the BTS reel will be the first The Last Jedi footage shown, we speculate that during the same event a new teaser will be shown as well - pretty much what they did with Rogue One. The big difference now is that we don't have a teaser going into Celebration, like we did for Rogue One. This leads us to speculate that if we get a teaser during Celebration in addition to the BTS reel, it will not be screened only for the fans in the hall, but for everyone.

Although we are confident in the part our source told us, still treat this as rumor for now. It has been demonstrated many times over that plans can change. I always like to give the example that Disney had a plan to attach a Rogue One teaser to The Force Awakens, but decided against it in the last minute. We will all find out the truth soon enough as Star Wars: Celebration is just 69 days away!

Tell us what you think in the comments below. Do you like the idea of getting both a BTS reel and teaser for The Last Jedi together during Celebration rather than an earlier date?

I find the idea of them showing a BTS and a teaser and making both public high unlikely.

They had already released a RO teaser when they did two videos at SWC, and even then they didn't release both.

The interview from December (I think in Variety, but I don't remember for sure) with that fop who is in charge of marketing at Disney had some off-hand comment about E8 marketing where he said "they" didn't plan to do as much for E8 because it didn't need it.

If they only release the BTS, that's BS.

Both of those BTS videos have been nearly worthless. They didn't really contain any footage or give you much of a feel for the film.

They were both incredibly self-satisfied and mostly a bunch of interviews with the cast out of costume in random rooms talking vaguely about how great the film is and how much fun they had and/or how much they love SW. It's basically a bunch of appearances on the Tonight Show stitched together.

If they aren't going to show any footage before SWC (which I kind of expected) and are only going to release a BTS, show a trailer to fans, then release a different one in August or whatever, that's pretty messed up.

Trailers are ads. Basically, if they don't publically release a trailer during SWC they are saying, "if you want to see ads for our product, you need to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for that privilege as well a free patronizing donut. We will, however, tell you how awesome we are for three minutes for free."

Sounds like KK to me actually.

LFL has never publically released two videos at once like that.

LFL has been incredibly secretive about TFA, RO (to a lesser degree, but that was out of necessity), and TLJ. Releasing a BTS and teaser/trailer at SWC and both publically would be a huge break in precedent.

Expecting two videos to be released publically without a source telling you that explicitly is very naïve and doesn't jive with any of LFL's recent behavior.

I have a feeling they won't give us a trailer until after the summer.

We'll get a BTS that will honor Carrie Fisher, and a several months later we'll get a trailer.

    Interesting thought.

I have a feeling we'll get a teaser no later than sometime in May.

Six months before the film? That's way too late for such a big of an event.

There's no way they're going to skip including a Star Wars trailer with Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2, which comes out only a few weeks after Celebration. I can't possibly see them not dropping a trailer at Celebration.

They will just drop a teaser at the most inconspicuous time. Won't be announced or anything.

I agree. There is just no way they'll show a BTS reel before an actual teaser with footage from the movie.
I'd keep February 23rd in mind.

    Great point.

They might "open" SWC with a BTS video which is largely a tribute to Carrie.
Then they might "close" SWC by showing the teaser trailer.
    That could work.

But it seems a tad tacky possibly to make the first footage seen of TLJ a tribute to Fisher. It would subvert the focus on Fisher because of how the media will coverage first footage. Or maybe they are trying to give extra importance to a tribute my making it the first footage/images seen. We'll see. I hope they surprise me by handling all this well.

Again, I hadn't considered the Fisher angle and this source doesn't seem to have been nearly specific enough to discount permutations like the tribute.

The recent release of another wave of RO toys certainly supports the guarantees of no footage soon.

    Get that dolla girl.

Well, they did release the title with no announcement, and at a surprising time frame, one would say. So, everything is possible IMO.

I don't know why they would be working on the BTS reel so far out. Even if only one man is working on it, it wouldn't take longer than 3 weeks at worst. These are usually 1 week or less jobs.

I watched a sizzle reel. I went to go see Rian in the edit, and that was very…[makes excited noise] Rian sounds very happy. It’s very, very exciting. Rian doesn’t love showing stuff. I’ve seen bits and bobs, but he likes it to be done. So I think probably the first time I see it will be when it’s fully done. I don’t think anyone will see an early cut outside of the main editing team….

That was back in mid December.

I thought the same. Good point. I would love to see a teaser this month or in March. I think it's possible.

It seems there is no particular order with teasers (at this moment, and if we count TFA one and the RO was not for everyone in good quality) :D. The TFA teaser was insane, but it was the first Star Wars movie in years.
This no established order could be great for future films. With all movies to come i think we will see teasers from January to December (with May premieres). We don't need too much. A couple of frames would be great... ;)

I (we)didn't expect the title TLJ in January 23. I suspect a teaser anytime (r2-d2)

    Interesting article.

    TFA Teaser - November 28
    TFA Teaser 2 - April 16 (Celebration)
TFA BTS - July 10 (SDCC)
    TFA Trailer - October 19

Rogue One Teaser - April 7
Rogue One BTS + Teaser (only for the attendees) - July 15 (Celebration)

if SWNN is right I could easily see the TLJ panel having two videos like Celebration London.

Basically start the panel talking about how production went, remember carrie etc, then show the BTS reel. Move on to individual character discussion etc, then wrap the panel with the first teaser.

Sounds reasonable, but only if we get a teaser before Celebration, which I now think we will.

Btw, does anybody know if Confidential Music has done countdowns for other movie trailers they've scored?

She said she watched a sizzle reel, which is what they sometimes refer to the BTS's as.

Your time frame is extremely tight if you think that approvals and revisions would be done within 3 weeks for something like that.

I think the death of carrie changed a lot of things for their timeline. Last I heard a lot was being changed so that they could make room to honor Carrie in the right way at Celebration. I take this as if the trailer concepts that were being tested will either be released later or before Celebration.
