Not that long ago, Jon Favreau told us that pre-production on The Mandalorian Season 2 was underway. Now, a new report suggests that production on the second season of the Disney+ show will begin this Fall, and it also reveals a director who will be coming back after working on two episodes for Season 1 - along with a Season 1 director who won't be returning due to scheduling conflicts.

According to DiscussingFilm, who previously reported that Lucasfilm want to work more with Rick Famuyiwa, they are now indicating that it seems that he's passed on doing work on the Cassian Andor-focused show in favor of doing more work on The Mandalorian. Famuyiwa's work begins on October 7, when production on the series is set to begin. Representatives of Rick Famuyiwa have confirmed DiscussingFilm's report as being accurate.

DiscussingFilm also add that showrunner Jon Favreau and cinematographer Barry Iodine are both returning. The other directors involved aren't clear as of right now, but one who definitely won't be back in time to direct Season 2 is Taika Waititi, who will be working on Next Goal Wins for Fox Searchlight starting November 4, in the middle of production on The Mandalorian. Afterward, he is expected to get into Thor: Love and Thunder, so that might rule out a potential Season 3 return behind the director's chair as well. However, presuming that his character survives the chaos of the Outer Rim, it's possible that Waititi can still return as an actor for his droid character, IG-11.

Although DiscussingFilm don't specifically mention this, this likely means that the series will return in Fall 2020, hopefully to ensure that there's at least one new live-action season of Star Wars content on Disney+ for any given year. If not, then the last season of The Clone Wars will most likely be 2020's big Star Wars show. So far, Disney have reportedly responded well to the direction that the series has taken, and it seems that a good portion of the future of the Star Wars franchise may very well be on the small screen after this December's The Rise of Skywalker.

The Mandalorian’s premise is as follows:
The Mandalorian Season 1 will be released on a weekly basis starting on November 12, the launch date for the Disney+ streaming service. No release window for Season 2 has been given.
