Rumour: Third Film was "ready to announce" before L&M problems. Still a chance to announce at D23

Kathy said they'd make a decision on the 3rd Anthology by June, there was a rumor some while back that the Han Solo shake up messed up Lucasfilms line up and that there might have been a TLJ teaser, Han Solo teaser, or both at D23 as well as the announcement of the 3rd film.

I think we'll get the BTS Sizzle Reel for TLJ (all but confirmed at this point) maybe some pics of HS and maybe some info about the 3rd movie <----- in order of likeliness.

 

Please be Kenobi ...

It would never happen... But Full on VADER film. I don't care if he is just sitting in a chair for 2 hours. Would watch.

 

I think a strong Solo trailer would do more to smooth the issues that film is facing, if they can piece one together.

Announcing the third anthology, while exciting, is a pretty transparent distraction.

 

I agree that announcing the third Anthology film is not going to distract audiences away from the problems with the Han Solo film.

However, considering how most people didn't want the Han Solo film to begin with, it would be nice for Lucasfilm to give us some good news by announcing a new Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone film with Ewan McGregor! (I kind of feel like, even though a few months ago it seemed very likely, everything going on with the Han Solo film may have made them want to wait to announce a third film.)

That being said, Lucasfilm is very aware of social media and fan reactions/opinions on certain things. Even Ewan McGregor has acknowledged the idea of an Obi-Wan standalone film and expressed interest in it. I'm pretty sure they know that we all want an Obi-Wan film, and I wouldn't be surprised for that to be the next Anthology film. I hope I'm right!

 

Well, according to the rumors from SNNN earlier this year, it'll either be that, the bounty hunter movie, or the teen-romance story after Episode 9. Out of those three, Kenobi is most likely, because it'd probably draw the most crowds. Besides, if Ewan makes an appearance in the ST (highly likely), then that'll probably make people want more of him.

 

i still feel weird for them announcing MOVIES at D23, but I get it because it's their last big public platform of the year...I hope they just announce a title and basic information but no concrete details.

Really? I hadn't heard about a teen-romance story. (I'm assuming the bounty hunter film would be a Boba Fett origin story?)

If Lucasfilm is smart, they won't go for a teen romance story. I don't know who would want it, especially after the criticisms that the love story in the prequels received. However, like you said, Kenobi would draw a lot of crowds. He's a fan favorite character and Ewan McGregor was pretty much universally accepted as one of the best parts of the Prequel Trilogy. Ewan appearing in the Sequel Trilogy would also make people want more of him, like you said!

I agree, but Ewan McGregor is open to the idea. I'm sure they could find a way around it. If he's willing and they're willing, I think they'll find a way to make it work.

I think it might be a tough sell, but Lost Stars is a pretty great story. As long as they didn't get terrible actors, I think the film itself could be pretty incredible.

The draw for Lost Stars would have to be the fact that we'd be revisiting the Galactic Civil War, even seeing events from the movies from another perspective.
The wouldn't have to necessarily market it as a teen romance flick. If Rogue One was heavily marketed as almost a Battlefront film (more accurately, for those into tabletop games, Imperial Assault) then Lost Stars could easily be marketed as a Rogue Squadron/TIE Fighter film. I think that would actually generate quite a bit of hype.

I agree that the Galactic Civil War could be a big selling point. There's potential there, but it absolutely HAS to be done right. They need to make something original that avoids copying Han and Leia's romance yet also avoids becoming as cheesy as the Anakin/Padmé relationship (which isn't horrible, but it's far from great). One of the issues with the Prequel Trilogy was the fact that George Lucas wrote AWFUL dialogue. If you avoid that and you get a really great group of people behind it, you can definitely make it work, but there has to be more to it than just the love story. It'd be tough to sell, and I think most fans would be skeptical, but I think it could be really good if they did it right.

 

Starring in a Star Wars movie is a far more prominent and lucrative role than anything MacGregor has done lately. His turn in Fargo was well-received, but T2 bombed atrociously, as did Jane Got a Gun. Plus, he's starring in Christopher Robin, which means he's already working for Disney for his biggest upcoming role...

I think the Kenobi story has been already told. If he was on Tattoine with the mission to hide and protect Luke, he won't have a galactic adventure who would alert the empire about his whereabouts.

 

If the Kenobi story was told, they would say as much.
Part of why we are getting the Han Solo movie is because his story is done. He is deceased and not coming back.

Kenobi, however may still yet play a role in the new trilogy and they don't want to throw the movie in that could possibly confuse the GA.

If Kenobi's story were done, they'd make a movie because it would basically be foolproof

 

We met Solo when he was about 30 I guess, we met Kenobi when he was 18 ...

Solo's movie is what Han did before joining the big story, we already know Kenobi's youth. There are no lost gaps in his story.

Unless you want a 2 hour movie of the life of an ermit on a desert planet

 

If you assume he did nothing but build sandcastles and master mating calls for 19 years.

 

The point is he had to be the most stealth as possible because his mission was bigger than him. Sure, he killed Maul but that was very quick.
