Just how much do we want to see of the classic game Sabacc in Solo? For as long as I can remember, Han won the Falcon from Lando in a game of Sabacc, but IIRC, all Han really says in ESB was "you lost her to me fair and square," with no actual reference to the game involved. That said, I think we're safe with it still being a Sabacc game. We even get a picture:[IMG]

That said, if we see this historic game, will we know what's happening? Will we get a primer on the rules? I recall the Han Solo Trilogy by Crispin gave a pretty good rundown, though to be honest I don't recall much. We all want to see Han win the Falcon, but it would be nice to actually understand what we're seeing. That said, a break down of the rules might be a bit much. Movies that heavily feature gambling, such as Rounders and Maverick don't bother to explain the rules of poker.

Also, I have to wonder what Han bet against Lando to get a ship. In the books, it was at the final game of championship tournament, so the stakes were realistically high. I kinda feel like a tournament like that would become the point of the whole movie though (kinda like Maverick).

On the flip side, this is a marketing tool that is being tragically ignored. I would pay good money for a set of sabacc cards fashioned after the ones in the movie, complete with Star Wars themed chips.

So how much of sabacc do you expect to see in the movie? Place your bets now. Betting closes just before the movie releases. Decide your own stakes among eachother in your posts.

I would guess ar least 2 games 1 or 2 games to get us used to it & then the one with the Falcon as the prize.
I also think that shot of Lando is going to be from one of the early games so we get to see how good he is & maybe why he feels confident enough to wager the Falco in it.

Come to think of it, you only see Mel Gibson play poker twice in Maverick. They talk about the tournament a lot, and they talk about tells a whole bunch, but really it's just the big tournament and that game at the beginning.

It was heavily explored in the Legends' Han Solo Trilogy by AC Crispin, but it's received mentions in plenty of canon material since the purge. Probably the best canon example is the Rebel's episode: Idiot's Array.

    Here's a reference for you. http://www.starwars.com/databank/sabacc

To further enlighten; in legends Sabacc is similar to blackjack but the cards change value at random. An “idiot’s array” is where a player’s hand doesn’t total 21, but the player has a 2 card and a 1 card making “21” and thus an “idiot’s array.” That always made me chuckle.

It would be bold of Lucasfilm to show a fair amount of sabacc in the film, mainly because it would be seen as slow-paced for many teens. But it worked for Bond in Casino Royale, and something similar to that is probably how I would have done it.

I also hope that Han DOES win the Falcon "fair and square". That being said, Han should win the game against Lando, either by LUCK or SKILLS. We don't want to see any unexpected twists just for the sake of subverting expectations, like showing Han cheating, Lando being drugged, or something silly like that. Just have Han win the game, please. It's simple.

I dunno, I think it would be kind of neat if Han cheated to get the Falcon. Maybe he absolutely needed a ship, Lando says "you can have mine if you out-gamble me", and Han goes "...K. ;)" That sounds fairly in-line with Han as a character to me.

The first time that Sabbac was referenced was in the old Lando Calrissian novels, back then I liked them quite a bit.

I still should have that old deck lying around somewhere – there was a RPG sourcebook for cloud city from West End Games including a deck of cards with some rules.

The first canon on screen version that I can remember was the game Zeb did with Lando in Rebels.

Wasn't there a game of Sabacc that you could play in KOTOR II? or was that a different game.

I stand corrected. It's been a while since I played the game. I couldn't remember.

No problem. I'm playing through it right now, so my memory of the game is quite fresh.

Yeah, Pazaak was also a card value game, where you want to get 20 without going over. A less complicated game at that. I wonder if they'll retcon pazaak to make it more distinct. Not that I'd expect them to address this in Solo.

All of the legends stuff runs together for me, in so far as what happened in what book.

I do recall that Han actually won the planet Dathomir in a Sabacc game (The Courtship of Princess Leia???) and there was reference to him carrying 7(?) hands in a row and how the odds of that were a bajillion to none... and the Falcon was Han's stake... and that it was the same improbable run that won him the Falcon from Lando in the first place... and Han felt he had to do it because Leia was also being courted by some Prince...

The takeaway was that there was no way Han could have even done that once, much less twice, except that clearly he was meant to have the Faclon and meant to be with Leia.

If I am making this up, please someone save me from my own delusions of grandeur ;)

Anyway, my point is that it would be a fun nod to have someone tell Han that the odds of winning the Falcon were preposterous and him replying with a "Never tell me the odds!", especially if it was Chewie.

I think the best way for them to show Han winning the sabacc game would be to have it be the last scene of the movie. After all the bad stuff goes down and the dust has settled we cut to Han, Lando and a few others who don't matter, we see the others fold (if that term applies to Sabacc) and it leaves us with just Lando and Han. Lando smiles and reveals his cards, everyone around them starts screaming from excitement. We see Han's face with his cards in front of him, he smiles cheekily and cut to the credits. Don't explicitly show him winning the Falcon, only imply it.

The version of Sabacc that is played in SOLO is called "Corellian Spike" , it is the only version that uses the dice. If the dice rolled "doubles" as in both symbols the same, at that time everyone throws out their current hand and draws all new cards. Our family got the Hasbro set see below it is really fun
