For me, it was when Biggs went down in ANH. Didn't seem like much at the time, but in retrospect, It's a total bummer for Luke as they were best friends their whole lives.

What's always interesting about their conversation that was inserted in the SE that takes place right before they attack the death Star is they mention Luke's dad being the best pilot in the galaxy.

But that was 1977 before Vader was Luke's father so they dubbed it out and I believe he says Luke is the best pilot in the galaxy. I haven't watched the SE in a long time so I could be wrong.

Saddest death for me was a deleted scene in The Phantom Menace. When one of the pod racer pilots died and his wife and kids were crying. So so sad.

When I was a kid watching ESB at the theater, I was very upset about Yoda dying.
Hopefully the rumors about a certain scruffy-looking smuggler's death in TFA are false. :(

I wouldn't want to se certain smuggler die either but this is something that Indiana Ford has wanted since the original movies so it really wouldn't surprise me if it happend.

Qui-Gon-Jin he was great. Much better character than the movie had room for.

I actually like the PT but there are a number of deaths in it I wish I felt more.
1- Shmi's death should have hit a stronger cord. I empathized with Anakin but I didn't feel his loss deeply.
2- The Sand People- You are supposed to see Anakin as a monster who offed a whole clan and it is supposed to be wrong, but first you feel for him and his need for vengeance sure its not the jedi way but you empathize with him. Second the sand people are such demonized monsters you have a real hard time caring they are getting killed. I mean if Anakin didn't kill them they would have sacked 30 more farms.
3- Padme- I get that Lucas was trying to have an ancient world mythic death for Padme but losing the will to live just didn't work.

Biggs for me. Luke had made a lot of friends up to this point, but he watched his only remaining connection to his previous life go up in flames. Followed by Anakin's death in ROTJ. The helmet reveal was something I had always wanted, but then he just can't hang on any longer. It was tough.

Yeah you're talking about Ratts Tyerell. Having his family watch him kick the bucket was indeed sad. I wonder how many little kids would have cried had that scene been included in the movie.

    Biggs Darklighter, I concur.

He was like an older brother to Luke and just before they got a chance to talk how they both arrived at Yavin IV Biggs got killed by Vader.

Anakin Childkiller? Didn't happen, there was no reason for this kind of atrocity and the original drafts had the clone troopers do that. One of the major reasons I have no love for the PT.

    Order 66

The whole PT left me cold, but this one thing just broke me.
The music, this one moment of understanding on all their faces. I can shrug the whole trilogy off without a second thought, but order 66 makes me bawl like a baby.

I think Order 66 would have worked for me on an emotional level if Lucas atleast explored other Jedi during the movies so I actually cared about them when they died. I know he can't flesh them out like Anakin, Obiwan and Padme, but just give us something about them just to connect with them during the 3 movies leading up to Order 66. I honestly couldn't tell you any of their names other then the cone head guy had a few lines during the trilogy.

For me it was always the ewok as well. I know they're not speaking English (or, Basic rather), but I'd swear that whatever he said as he shook his friend sounded just like "Don't die..." to me as a kid. Still does actually.

    Here’s a sad death.

“Right now I feel like I could take on the whole Empire myself”

    Dak Ralter.

His databank entry on the Star Wars website is even sad:

    “DAK RALTER

An eager young rebel pilot assigned to Hoth’s Echo Base, Dak dreamed of winning glorious victories in the struggle against the Empire. He served as Luke Skywalker’s tailgunner during the Battle of Hoth, but things didn’t go the way Dak had imagined them: He struggled with a malfunction in fire control, and then was killed by Imperial fire that struck the back of the snowspeeder.”
