I personally love the EU and almost everything about it The Yuuzhan Vong, Grand Admiral Thrawn, the Legacy storyline with Jacen as Darth Caedus were all pretty great. And if Disney chooses to disregard it I hate them for doing it but I understand it. They want to make a clean start without the clutter of the existing star wars universe.

What I don’t understand however is why they feel the need to completely erase the old republic as well. The existing old republic stories including Revan and others are some of my favorites.

If Disney kept the old republic history alive it would be a conciliatory gesture towards the existing star wars fan base. More Importantly, the existence of this history doesn’t interefere with the continuity of the six movies or the upcoming trilogy.

Isay move the founding of the republic to 8000 years before the rise of the empire.

Have the force wars, hundred year darkness, golden age of the sith, and all that jazz combined into a 500 year period and it be the founding of the sith... with them being banished to sith space and morriband.

Save all relevent characters, have the sith return with the Great Hyperspace war, integrate the Massassi as the original foot soldiers for the sith...

Re-write everything to be in a much smaller time-frame but try to preserve every character and event.... especially the Knights of the Old Republic era...

I think the deletion of the old republic stuff was rash. They could have reorganized it, made some canon and some legends.

But this leaves all the old old republic stories and games to still enjoy but opens the door for a live action old republic movie and new EU material. I know the legends stuff doesn't count but it just means that the old republic timeline is waiting to be formed. I know a live action movie may be a way off but I could see the old republic already poping up in video games and referenced in movies before they start to build that area of the SW universe. Also since darth bane is now canon and rumors of a graverobber type figure in TFA it could mean we will be see small pieces like a mask here or saber there that will eventually be used to rebuild the story of the old republic.

I would combine the TOR (mmo) era with the Darth Bane era I think...

My guess is once the sequel trilogy has concluded we will get an Old Republic era Jedi vs Sith trilogy, or even trilogies. It will give breathing room in case they ever decide to make Episode 12-15. You bring up a good point about Darth Bane being canon, his story is so important to the Old Republic era events. I hope one of the overlords in the new Story Group has a plan for an asset like that, because you could really tell a great story using that character.

In my opinion they should canonize ONLY The Old Republic video game, the Knights of the Old Republic videogames and comic, the Darth Bane trilogy, and Dawn of the Jedi comics/novel since that really doesn't effect anything because of how far back it was in the timeline.

See, that's the problem with partial canonization of the EU. No matter what they would do, the EU fans would be divided. Cleaning the entire slate was the best move. Then they can pick and choose what fan favorites to add in, if any. Which to me is way more exciting.

I feel bad though, I can sorta get why people like the Dawn of the Jedi comics... but I think people like the idea of them more than the comics themselves.

What should have beenn a unique era, before Jedi had lightsabers, before there were too many species, or widely used space-travel... was within three or so issues just a generic star-wars story, with lightsabers, virtually identical space travel minus hyperdrive, and apparently every single species that occupies the outside universe being a part of this single solar system.

It was... annoying... to say the least. They even had Dathomir witches, which should not have been able to exist in any way shape or form at that time... let alone be distinguishable from the rest of the human population of the tython system...

It could have been a great and amazing series... but they just wanted to play it safe, and make it look as much like every other star wars comic as they possibly could

I hadn't even really considered the Bane era. I would agree that should be kept as well. The Bane trilogy novels were fantastic. I'm also pretty generally a fan of whatever Drew Karpyshyn writes. And since Bane is mentioned by name in The Phantom Menace, he's still part of canon in some way or another.

The era directly proceeding the Bane Era is somewhat ill-defined and not very-well-loved

that is why I say squih it and the TOR era together, make what is loved of these two... not super loved eras can glompulate together into a more loeved era.

He was only mentioned in the novel which is only canon where it alligns with the film. As for Bane being canon, he was in an episode of The Clone Wars, appearing in spirit only but he looked nothing like his EU counterpart.

I say they make a greatest hits collection, redo the best of the EU stories in some sort of history book series. Release them in volumes. Something George RR Martin or Tolkien-like. They make the best stories canon, and the Legends novels and comics are relevant

I like this and kinda wanna build off of it. I think it would be cool to do something along the lines of the Star Wars tales comics. If they did that they could take short stories from the EU and make them canon without having a huge effect on the current canon. For example they could have the story of how darth bane went from a miner up to him starting to train as a sith without including all the other stuff from the books. This would have virtually no impact on the universe as a whole but would provide a cool Star Wars story.

I really think disney is saving the old republic though until they have exhausted the main story and all spin off's they can pull out of the time of the skywalkers. I know disney is really trying to reach a broad audience with the new material but I hope that while they are doing that they also put out some deep lore stuff for us fans who are DEEP into Star Wars and i think old republic material would be great for this.

I assumed they would continue to publish Old Republic and other era books under the "Legends" blanket term.

Will they be releasing any new "Legends" material? I'm sure they will rerelease stuff for certain anniversaries and stuff but I haven't heard anything about original material being published under the "Legends" banner. I think it would be cool if they did still expand "Legends" but I could see it getting confusing as to what is legends and what is canon as time goes on.
