First of all, I didn't address blockbuster films in general, but superhero films. Star Wars films are blockbusters, but not superhero films.

Second, I don't agree that mega-budget films must occupy as much of the the financial resources of studios as they do now. This is a relatively recent phenomenon: the near-disappearance of mid-budget films. It's been thoroughly documented and addressed by historians of film history.

Now, of course this might be a financial necessity now, but creatively I think this is regrettable. Here we just get to matters of taste, where obviously people just vary. Personally, I'm pretty worn out with superhero films. A number of my friends, who are otherwise pretty geeky like me (i.e. who love scifi and fantasy generally), fee similarly. Of course, this is a small sample size, and not necessarily representative of a larger trend, but it leads me to speculate that the inevitable decline in the superhero movie trend will come sooner rather than later.

In any case, I personally am looking forward more to upcoming non-superhero genre films than to the MCU - certainly more than DCEU films, which I've never liked: Star Wars movies at the top of the list for sure, followed by things like Denis Villeneuve's Dune adaptation, and the occasional indie and/or small budget scifi film, of which there have been a good number of impressive examples in recent years.

That's fine man, certainly enjoy what you want. I'm just saying, it's a false dichotomy to say that less of one genre will necessarily equate to more of another.

I'd think that rather than complaining about the amount of superhero films, it might be more productive to advocate for the films that you do want. But that's just me.

It's possible but quite hard for SW super fanatics like us! It will always be the best production in the history of sci-fi genre!

Judging by the unwarranted 3 star customer review TLJ has on Amazon, I'd say it's happened now. After Episode IX, they need to pace these out every 3 years. 2 years at the very least. Or they make these films completely different from one another, with completely different stories and timelines.

Star Wars should be okay, as long as Disney keep to the yearly format and keep with the consistent quality - TFA, Rogue One and TLJ are all better than the original trilogy, which bodes well for Disney going forward

As long as there is quality over quantity it will be fine. I want Disney and Lucas Film to get out of their comfort zone and start making more risky movies like TLJ, even if half of fanbase hates it. Unexpected, fresh and thought-provoking, that's what I want.
I think maybe they will after they finish the 3rd standalone movie which I suppose will also revolve around OT era.
You can't make safe fan-service movies like Rogue One forever.

Anyhow, Star Wars franchise is the only strong counter measure against those boring, predictable and generic Marvel movies.
There are exceptions, but really if you watched the trailers before TLJ in cinema, you really don't know when does one trailer end and other one begins. They all look the same.
    No offense to anybody. :D

Food for thought: between Jurassic World movies, Disney will have released four Star Wars movies.

They can mix it up. Have an animated movie 4 the year.

I think it has to do with the point that the last two movies rehash content from OT, in contrast to Rogue One, which is quite different. But such burnout should not concern producers much if many members of their target audience are from different countries and barely know about OT because they are young. I've seen similar taking place for recent films of other franchises with viewers not realizing that they rehash material from previous movies.

I guarntee, espically if 2019 is a recession year with most experts saying it will, that 9 will make even less then TLJ.

It will be super predictable. The only mystery left is if KR lives or dies.

Let's wait how much time there will be between the third anthology movie and the beginning of Rian's new trilogy. If Disney is clever, there will be three years, so the possible burnout has time to cool down...

If Disney continues rehashing elements from the OT or simply releasing mediocre films (for me,"Rogue One" is the exception so far), then chances are I will experience burn out. And honestly? I think Disney should consider waiting at least two years between every Star Wars movie. Once a year? We're not talking about comic book movies, which are already beginning to burn out for me.

I think the main thing that can make the movies stale is bad writing for quick money grabbing Disney pros. Instead of well thought out, beautiful films
