Under the guise of a seemingly innocent harmless Jedi with fluctuating emotions, lies a brutal and sophisticated tactical murderer. Fitting since warfare is based upon deception, which makes Anakins character that much more fantastic. Like a seemingly harmless creature that lures you into your demise.

This is the characterization of Darth Vader, personified:

Yet people in their arrogance if they met such a person in real life would say "He is harmless!" when in fact he hides a brutal killer inside.

People say the portrayal was incorrect, while it was spot on. Anyone versed in war and nature knows this is a fitting portrayal of the greatest Sith Lord ever.

Like hiding a bomb in a childs toy, and delivering it to the unexpecting, in a cold and calculated manner.

Like a demon hiding in a small child, who slaughters arrogant full grown adults like cattle.

Yes... this is indeed.. Darth Vader.

Anakin was a very complex and confused soul. By the end he struggled between dark and light. He chose what he thought was right which was a lie. It made him strong in the darkside.

Interesting fact: the film version (and subsequent digital, DVD, BD releases) of the musical cue "Anakin Changes" contains an insert of the Emperor's Theme as we see Ani break down -- the cue as written and recorded by John Williams / London Symphony Orchestra does not.

It's an interesting choice that the editors (?) made if not to draw attention to Sidious' influence on Ani's descent to the Dark Side...almost as if Sidious could feel the disturbance in the Force as Ani confesses his anger to Padme.

The best part is when the imperial march played after Anakin finished his sentence.
    Beautiful scene.

I like the way Anakin is portrayed, and I like the way Hayden portrays him. A lot of people claim to be disappointed in this, but I agree - they got it right.

For 25 years (1980-2005), people wondered what made Anakin turn to the Dark Side. Almost everyone seemed to have some version of Anakin getting super p***ed off for one reason or another, but we finally learned that, although he made a wrong decision, he did it for love rather than hate. Showing Anakin as a "failed good guy" rather than "the world's baddest bad guy" only makes his redemption that much sweeter.

Anakin's direct and disturbing proclamation of hatred follows in the natural course of falling to the Dark Side:

as Yoda said, "Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering."

There is such powerful tragic irony (http://www.shakespeare-online.com/literaryterms/ironytragic.html) necessarily inherent in Anakin's Prequel characterization.

He cannot remain "Ani," he cannot become the Jedi he hoped to be, and he is such a case of potentials unfulfilled, appropriated, and misdirected through Palpatine's manipulation of his fears.

Those with Original Trilogy knowledge can anticipate this turning as it must manifest.

Anakin's journey "down the dark path" would indeed dominate his destiny.

Watching it all unfold, witnessing Anakin rise and fall from adolescent angelic stature to demonic enragement makes the turning all the more sorrowful, especially if you know such a transformation is inevitable.

But, thankfully he is never beyond redemption, thanks greatly in part to Luke (and, not to mention, Lucas' own understanding and portrayl of the importance of love and compassion in the otherwise embittered war of good vs. evil).

Anakin is so conflicted at this point and Hayden plays it so well. He knows he's done wrong, he knows he's "better than this", but he is a slave to his emotions. And these emotions will be his downfall. With this scene he's already taking another step down the dark path - who knows what else has already happened by this point? Who knows what else he has confessed to his friend Palpatine?

I have to say, though, that I disagree with the OP's perspective on Anakin. He is not cold blooded. In fact, he is the exact opposite. He is impulsive and rash. And he deserves our sympthay.
