Ok all, as we know, Anakin, Luke, Leia, and Ben (and IMHO, REY) are all offspring of the Force within the Skywalker family, right? These stories ultimately began with Shmi Skywalker, and then there was Padme, which, between the two, are the grandmother and mother of the twins (Luke and Leia) respectively.

Shmi and Padme were both a focal point for Anakin during his journey to the dark side, and both unwittingly played a role within that journey. That being said, neither Luke or Leia ever knew Shmi or Padme, but had met Anakin (Vader) and knew who he was in the end.

Will we ever get any references to Shmi or Padme in this new trilogy? I'd personally like to at least hear their names mentioned by their offspring as an homage to them. Thoughts?

I think that it depends on how important they end up being to this trilogy.

I really doubt it. The reason I say this is because as we can all see, Disney is molding SW into their own version and little by little it will continue to eliminate everything Lucas in order to give us everything Mouse. Look at how TFA diminished characters like Luke and Leia and it even got Han killed. These movies are going to be the adventures of the new generation of ST heroes while it gives homage (in a real messed up way) to the past OT ones. Apart from that, many fans hated the whole Anakin conceived by the Force thing and they disliked Padme just as much so I think Disney will stir clear of those characters just to remain on the safe side.

    That, and this:

Combined, give me the impression that we most likely will not hear them mentioned. I would not mind a nod to these ladies, but I doubt it will happen. My best guess is that we will hear a whisper or one of those lines about "someone a long time ago knew such and such" in reference to one of them, something only a fan would recognize.

I think it will be unlikely, but I can see it happening in a scene similar to when old Ben tells Luke about Anakin/Vader in ROTJ. The problem with that is that the scene will have to be necessary to the plot and the characters, it can't simply be exposition for the sake of referencing the characters. I'd also be concerned it will feel too much like that scene, and people will get upset with the blatant "copying."

Aside from the outside GFFA arguments, nobody around in the ST really knows anything about Shmi anymore, and pretty much nobody in the ST had a personal relationship with Padme. It would be hard to do this organically and with meaning on screen, and I think they may be hard pressed fitting everything in as it is.

I get where you're comming from though. They were pivotal in the incipient saga of the Skywalkers, but tend to get overshadowed by the likes of Vader and Luke. Likely as not, there will be no mention in the films, but they're are small bits of homage scattered around the places like Bloodline novel. At least it's not nothing.

What about c3pi and f2d2? They're the only characters who have known all the major characters. And r2d2 is going to end up being snoke.

Yeah, but Threepio had his mind wiped when he went to Bail. And Artoo doesn't seem as chatty these days. Too much on his mind, I guess. Possible that could change, but even then he is limited to those that speak Astromech.

Haha, loving these crack Snoke theories. Well, I guess that could explain the long nap, he was busy broadcasting his Snoke avatar and running the FO, and also why Luke left him behind. He was a traitor who got in Ben's ear behind his back.

No really, wash your brain out with soap! Now I have to go wash mine too, lol.

Judging by TFA, I would say there's no way thry will mention Shmi, not even make a reference to her, and any theory involving her or force-conceiving is hard to believe, at least for me, seeing how they avoided anything exclusive to the prequels. They would never re-use such a criticized concept.
As for Padmé there might be a mention of her as "mother", "wife", "grandmother" or something along those lines, just referencing by her relationship to an important character of this trilogy if needed, although nobody would be pissed off if they just drop her name...

Just a short wild guess (and I don't made a research here or elsewhere in the web before writing, therefore please don't kill me immediately, if it's unoriginal in your eyes): What if Shmi also had Twins and they get seperated immediately after birth like Padme's and Shmi didn't no. Shmi was a slave right?. What if the second child was taken away being "sold" to another family. In that case there could be a second Skywalker line (with another name of course). Then Shmi would be the great grandmother of Rey and Luke would really be related to her, but just in another way as most people thought. :) (I think I risk a lot of disagrees, old news and unoriginal votes here:))

Only JJ wanted to avoid the prequels. Rian Johnson liked them and he's writing episodes 8 and 9, so it's lets wait and see on the prequel references.

Who are those droids? They sound like CIS knockoffs of R2-D2 and C3P0 :p.

What I think should happen is likely not what will happen, but as I cannot say what will happen I shall say what I think should happen...

In regards to canon, the conception, birth and life of Anakin Skywalker needs to be touched upon in this trilogy.
We know that Anakin was either a product of Sith meddling or the Force creating him directly.
If the latter is the case then we have to wonder why this doesn't happen every time the Force goes out of balance.
If the former is the case then we must know who did it and how they did it. This is a power to important to just be left (as with cheating death in regard to Plagueis lore).

What we do know is that Anakin and Shmi arrived on Tatooine (or at Mos Espa) when Anakin was aged 3.
This provides an opportunity for a story be told about where they were before that.
I once mused that Plagueis created Anakin to later use as his apprentice, sold him into slavery on Tatooine to keep him "safe" (and full of angst) and then waited for the right time to go back and train him as a Sith. Palpatine found out however and then killed Plagueis.

But anyway, I think that an interesting story could be told about Anakin's creation that directly relates to the story being told now in this trilogy and from this we could learn about Shmi. I'd love to know ow exactly Plagueis could create life and whether he required some kind of lab to temple to manipulate those midi's within. Perhaps this is where Luke went to search out answers about his family's origins and from this learns of Shmi?

On a side note, I think it would also be interesting to hear about Padme - perhaps Luke has found records about his mother, images etc.

Same here. Maybe for the sake of the main plotline that would not be needed, but it would be nice. Or maybe there could be a reason why they are mentioned.

Agree. Like a Easter Egg that would have us fans with a little gasp after noticing.

Yeah, and that part was right on the feels. A tiny mention but truly endearing.

It's like the Princess Leia # 2 comic where Leia sees this statue of Queen Amidala and has a funny feeling. But obviously there she was not aware yet of her origins.

What if they came from Jakku? Lol. Just kidding, I guess as they were owned by Gardulla the Hut and so far we have not heard any Hutt presence in Jakku.

They did during the time between ROTJ and TFA. At least in Bloodline is mentioned that Leia is aware of Padme being her biological mother.

I don't understand this need of prequel fans to have the new series of movies see the names of characters or do something else that blatantly goes out of the way to mention something from that era. Do you feel like you need your favorable opinion of the series validated? Because if you look at it logically, there's no reason for characters to mention people and places from two trilogies ago.. Almost nobody is left from that era. Almost nobody,, if anybody at all, even those who those people are.

Threepio had a mind wipe so only Artoo has any direct knowledge of Shmi and that just a tiny bit, it was Threepio that knew her best really maybe better than Anakin.

Even the force ghosts are little to no help from their physical times. Obi-Wan never met her nor did Yoda. Qui-Gon had some limited interactions. Even her child other than her last few moments only knew her as a nine year old.

These two have been dead for a couple or three generations now and pretty much no one living knew them at all and even the active dead are dicey.

There is a little more room for Padme but just a little she has been dead almost as long. It just is a major, major shoe horn situation here.

How often do your greats dead 50+ years come up especially the ones that that no one alive knew come up other than talking family trees or something?

My daughter was born after my mother passed. In what context will she be talking about my mother as an adult?
All she will have is my and my sister's stories. What is there when there are no such stories?

I understand the wish, I just don't see how it makes sense in the actual context.

Vader's arc seemed like it was going to be an important theme to Kylo in TFA.
Back in 2016, I would've probably thought Shmi or Padme could've had some importance to the ST.

After TLJ, though... I'm not convinced the Vader stuff is going to be all that important going forward. I'd love to be wrong, and maybe JJ will surprise me, but I think we've "left the past" far behind at this point, and Shmi and Padme likely aren't at the top of the list to be brought back.
