As we know, Shmi Skywalker is buried at Lukes home in ANH. I've noticed that GL conveniently buried her just out of the shot where we see Luke looking at the setting suns in ANH. I've noticed that there is never a reference to her again, and no shot of her grave in the OT.

Here's a question: Would you like (for the sake of nostalgia) to see a shot of her grave or a reference in some form edited into the Original Trilogy?

I personally would...as a respectful reminder of her.

Are you suggesting a... Special Edition change?!?

*all kinds of dramatic music plays. probably lightning, too*

I think the grave would be a nice touch. It would also be significant in that moment. But let no one know of this, lest we are hunted down and burned at the stake for suggesting such a thing!

I feel that Luke really doesn't know his family, as he thought his father was a Spice Trader. If he doesn't know who his father really was, then he wouldn't know his mother, and then he also wouldn't know his grandmother. Shmi Skywalker is a SKYWALKER, everything that Owen became cynical of during the Clone Wars and the Galactic Civil War, and did everything to hide Luke from. Touching as it may be, canonically, I think it would be better to not have the grave to show the lack of understanding Luke has of his family line.

And for anyone who doesn't accept @ZebroGodilla's explanation, if you go back and watch Shmi's funeral, the gravestones are in a location that is never included in any shot of the Lars' homestead. Looks like Mr. Lucas knew what he was doing after all.

He'd probably see that grave every day, and it would say "Shmi Lars", so if Owen is cold enough, he might never know he was related to her as directly as he is.

Well....then there's that!! Owen was just that type of guy that could've claimed her (to Luke) as ANY family member without revealing her true identity with the name Lars engraved....good thinkin'!

Seeing as how Owen wanted to protect Luke from the truth, I'm quite sure that he removed the gravestone so that Luke wouldn't have to ask about it. When ROTS ends, we just see Obi Wan give baby Luke to Owen and Beru yet we have to assume that there was some sort of conversation between them and Kenobi told him the things that Anakin had done. This would give more meaning to Owen's dialogue when Beru tells him Luke's like his father and Owen tells her that's what he's afraid of. Why would he say that if he didn't know that Anakin had turned evil? Had Kenobi not said anything then the memory that Owen would have had of Anakin would be positive as he would remember him as a heroic Jedi who was sad at the loss of his mother but did everything to get her back. Raising Luke would make Owen and Beru love him so it would be far easier to remove the gravestone than to have to lie to Luke telling him that Doughnut Lars was the one buried thereas well as having to come up with the story of who Doughnut Lars was.

It's nice to see a moment where he actually thought about continuity with the originals. And this is also why a Special Edition addition wouldn't work (if it is always off screen, where would you add it?). And I really don't want further SE changes like that. And considering that I've never once thought of that in 14 years (and I am a gigantic nerd), it isn't really needed at all.
    Not unreasonable a theory.

Who's Doughnut Lars? I think that it's disrespectful to simply forget about Shmi's grave and basically pave over it...

Doughnut Lars is just me joking to give an example and sure I know it may look disrespectful at first but that depends on how Owen did it. Remember that three years had passed since Anakin buries Shmi there but maybe that wasn't the best place to put her remains.
Look at the tombstones in this pic:
    !!!!!!!!!!!!! shmi grave.png
They really look plain and simple and are just out in the open where anyone can just walk right over the graves. Maybe when his dad died, Owen probably decided to move the bodies to a better place and bury them along with his dad. This would be seen by him as a sign of respect and not the contrary. We also don't know if it was in fact Cliegg Lars who had asked his son to bury his wife and the other family member in another place next to him when he died. Once more, this would have been a way for Owen to honor his fathers last wishes and not as a way to be disrespectful to his families graves.

I think it would work. But not in the Binary sunset scene. That is one of the most famous and perfect scenes in Star Wars so it shouldn't be altered IMO

    the child slaver?
    yuon parr?
Obiwan killed the Jawas, Obiwan killed Owen and Beru, get real, Anakin, left her, out there, he doesn't care, until she's going to get broken in by the sand people lars sold her to, and be their master sith child slaver, slave,
so he finds her and her mind breaks apart, cuz oh this brave boy won't let her, ever, do it again, and she dies.. Owen told Luke, once, "You know when I think about it,
jedi doesn't mean squat I hearda one, who found a tribe a sand people, slaughtered 'em, not just the men, but the women, and the children, for vengeance, he said he did it," and Luke was like, the slavers? cool.

I kind of want them to return to that character, I want to know more about her history. I want them to give us some more things to speculate on about Anakins birth, I don't need explained just some little lore nuggets.

As it had already been mentioned, it's technically impossible to insert Shmi's tombstone into ANH because the location is in none of the original (Tunisian) shots' backgrounds.

I don't recall there was ever any known text on these tombstones, could just be the first names and there wouldn't be need for detailed explanations.

Luke's grandfather could have died in space, same goes for his father ("navigator on a spice freighter") but I'm certain Luke would have asked about the absent tombstone of his mother - unless they saw to it to erect one in her memory so that neither Luke or the Imperial authorities would get too suspicious.

It would be cool to further tie in the two trilogies but I don't see it as necessary. If you're a fan of the prequels then you know where she is buried, nearby where Luke is at during the beginning of ANH. If you're not a prequels fan, then there's no reason to irk them by reminding them of the prequels with a reference to Shmi
