While Rebels is currently in its third season and doing pretty well for the most part, there have been ongoing rumours that a new animated series is in active development at LucasFilm.
If this is the case and it happens to be set between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, should the main heroes of Luke, Han and Leia feature as the main characters of the series, or do you think that they should not be in the series, or cameos at most?
Also, how far into the time gap do you think it should go? Should Ben Solo be a character, perhaps foreshadowing his eventual transformation into Kylo Ren; Should Snoke feature and deal with the rise of the First Order out in the Unknown Regions; What of surviving characters from The Clone Wars and Rebels? etc etc.

However, then you have the hurdle of dealing with these characters played by different actors.

Star Wars doesn't belong on tv. The Holiday Special proves that.

Clone Wars and Rebels doesn't count, those were specifically made for a kids cartoon tv channel. ;)

That's a younger Han though, so it leaves some room for suspension of disbelief.
This would be a Han squarely between when we know him as Harrison Ford in Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

as a cartoon it could work. recasting doesn't seem like a satisfying option.
i'd be willing to give this a chance. if it's set post Wendig's Aftermath, even better.

I'm not too sure about this. Leia's involved in politics, Luke's seeking Jedi knowledge, and Han's involved in races, or something. These three storylines don't mesh well.

I think they should take a break from it, not stop this supposed new show altogether but just take a break let a few years go by and then air it. Remember the first show The Clone Wars didn't start off strong and many fans didn't hold it in such high regards until much much later in seasons, before people hated the Clone Wars but then it got better and people began to see it for what it really was and learn to love it. For Rebels it seems like the same thing only that show started because Clone Wars got canceled it didn't start on it's own like CW did so that's why a lot of people hate it and hate it for not being Clone Wars. Honestly I know fully well that people will just hate things no matter what simply because it's not something they love, but I have to confess that I'm getting sick of Rebels getting hassle from CW fans like this. We can like ou Star Wars any way we like and we can be pally with those the like different things. If this new Star Wars series does become real it will get backlash but it will also get fans, I want this one to have a better chance to connect with it's audience that Rebels sadly did. I don't know if it would help at all, but I like to think we shouldn't rush things, give people time and let them take a breath before moving on to the next big thing.

You know, will CW and Rebels are truly awesome, I really with the animated series already moved to the future and stopped living in prequel eras. Why not give us a series in the ST timeline? Wouldn't it be awesome to see a new group of heros interact with Rey, Finn and Poe from time to time? And if they don't want to worry about ruining anything canon they can just place the series during the events of TFA. This could give us a chance to appreciate some elements from TFA that were just not given much importance. Imagine the new heros arriving on Jakku to visit a loved one just to find out that Kylo Ren and the First Order had completely murdered the villagers or the reactions of the heros when Starkiller destroyed the Republic. If they don't want to go this way and they still want to keep it in the past then why not give the fans what they have been yearning for for so long and give us a series about the Old Republic? That would be sweet!

i think there are lots of stories to tell between TFA and TLJ, and i think the rebels/TCW approach is a good way of doing it.

I think it would be acceptable to use the big 3, but i suspect they won't.. perhaps in a few years time.

what i think we may get? a series showing Rey getting to, and growing up on Jakku.
what i'd like? i'll jump on @FN-3263827's coat tails and say a cartoon about the FO.. Mmm yes please!

What happens with Thrawn after Rebels is always the elephant in the room for me. Huge story there methinks.

While I agree with most things you said here, I do have to tell you my friend that no matter how much time they let pass, haters are always going to hate no matter what. They bashed the PT which came years after the OT, they bashed the cartoon series, they bashed the CGI CW series, they bashed Rebels and they will bash a new series that can be made 10 years from now.

Animated series by Filoni with Hamill providing not only the voice of Luke, but Leia and Han too?!

But jokes aside, Filoni was recently promoted to "overseer of all future and current Lucasfilm Animation projects", and still serves as exec. producer and supervising director on Rebels. I don't think him being on the sets of VII, VIII and RO are coincidence - or just a PR move - and considering his recent promotion, I doubt he's vying for live action director for at least another five years.

I have no doubt that he's working on multiple projects for the Animation department's future (Old Republic era animated show after ST wraps up; post-Jedi era animated show in the coming year/s?) and wouldn't at all be surprised if we had news come this April at Celebration that they're working on a post-Jedi show. Rebels from, what is it, October through March and another show for the summer perhaps? Could also be treated as an early test for how well the idea of two movies per year could work with the fan base.

I would love to see an animated series set after ROTJ. to see new stories of the big three. There is a lot to tell in that period.

But I would like to see another kind of animation, more like Tron: Uprising. Something with more personality and visionary style.

It would need Billy Dee in there too - something to explain Lando's absence in the ST so far. I'd love to see him shrug off the General role after ROTJ and decide to head off with Nien Nunb in the stolen Lambda shuttle, falling back into his old scoundrel ways

Nah it would be better to focus on some new characters but have some cameos of the big three when necessary. In Rebels we have had Lando , Leia, C3P0, Tarkin & Vader as cameos and they have all worked out well.

My greatest wish for Star Wars television:

A series set after VI chronicling Luke's formation of his school. Most episodes will consist of training lessons between Luke, a young Ben Solo, and other students. Mark Hammill can voice Luke; Han, Leia, Lando, Wedge, etc will all have character roles. Some episodes will show Luke leaving the school temporarily to go on quests with Lor San Tekka.
