Should Episode VIII continue the tradition of a ship passing over the screen after the opening crawl

You're right, but the scene doesn't have to be 3 minutes long. They can just show snippets of her journey.

No, I don't think that's what they're doing. Rian Johnson said he couldn't leave that scene to TFA because he had to know what they said to each other. So the whole point of it is that meeting between them. Redoing the journey, even in truncated form, serves no purpose.

Just my opinion, of course. The opening to this movie is really uncharted territory!

I honestly don't see how its possible to start where they left off.

Maybe they mean Skellig. Maybe they mean the PLACE not time where they left off.

Some time will have to pass, right?

SW always has time lapses between Episodes. What could you possibly write in the opening scroll without a time lapse anyway?

    Episode 8
    Yadda Yadda

No time has passed.... we cut back to Achtoo, with Rey and Luke.

He couldn't be more clear. It's super late for me now, but I can find his exact quote in the morning. Someone may need to remind me. ;)

Well, I just read the quote. He just says it will pick up where it left off. Leaves room for interpretation but your right most evidence is pointing towards timeline wise.

Bad move imo if they choose to go that route though. I would rather have the skip in time. I think alot more fans will be upsets. Berry bad mui mui.

Then they may as well title it as "Episode VII Part II" or "The Force Awakens, Part II".
    Grrr.

That's exactly why I think Rey meeting Luke will be the opening scene.
I think the movie will open with a couple of shots of the Falcon approaching Luke's island. It will then cut to Luke's perspective and show Rey's arrival on the mountain top. This can be done in under a minute.

No crawl. Have a voice announce "Previously on Star Wars!". Then show a montage of short scenes from TFA. Afterwards, start VIII.

As many before me have pointed that out, Episode VIII will most likely start with a scene of Hux, Kylo and Phasma coming back to The First Order HQ (wherever that is) to meet with Snoke and to show that this entity is still a force to be reckoned with. After that, we'll go on Ahch-To to see what is the outcome of Rey and Luke meeting.

I think this is a very good possibility. We have to remember that the things we see on screen are not always linear. Multiple things are happening at the same time. In the case of this scenario, we would see what is happening with Kylo during the same time that Rey is reaching Luke. The movie then is still starting off exactly where TFA left off. We just will be seeing a different event. Then they switch to Ach-to and we see what happens after she extends the saber to Luke demonstrating that there is no time lapse.

As far as the crawl in this situation, it can describe what the state of the galaxy, including the state of the Resistance, FO, and New Republic, is like after the events of TFA.

I agree with the previous two posts completely. I think that's exactly what will happen. And this way, it preserves the pan up to a starship.

I also think what your saying will happen as well, or something along those lines. I do think we will see Kylo and the First Order in some way and then the screen will fade from left to right and we will see Anch-To.

Cool idea. I'd love to see Rey's approach from Luke's perspective. I'd even go a little further by showing a short montage of Luke (without showing his face - just as a tease more than anything) going about his day and the reason for him standing at the highest point of the island (grave stone??) upon Rey's arrival, before the Falcon breaks the silence and the camera reveals Luke's face, and then we get Rey's approach and the long-awaited conversation.

As for the opening scene with a ship, I don't really mind either way. I just want them to keep it fresh and interesting. I'm one of those that thought Luke's saber tumbling through space would've been a cool opening, even if a little silly. :D

Well if the assumption is RIGHT after. Meaning no time at alll. I figured the timing to be few weeks but not long as opposed to years.

In that case the crawl can recap and give context to what happened in TFA. For instance it can explain that while the Starkiller is gone. The 1st Order achieved its goal of destroying the Republic and rushes to solidify its position of strength.

As for the opening scene a ship comes into view but as the camera pans it is in atmosphere and comparably very small and its more of a speeder rushing the puffin like furbies to Luke's location.

Luke looks to Rey. "I see you have my father's sabre. You will need it. Even now the Guardians of Ach-to approach."

.... Why wouldn't they? A Star Destroyer lurks over. It's what makes the (classic) Star Wars movies Star Wars!

I hope they keep the tradition of the pan and the ship. I don't see why they wouldn't. To me, this is a great moment of anticipation. I have waited so long for a new Star Wars movie, I'm sitting in the dark theater, just heard the great music and read the crawl... Now, a moment of excitement and anticipation as I see the first ship and wonder what is going to happen, before any dialog starts. I love that moment!!!

If they did this, I think we'd just see the Falcon above the planet, maybe some establishing shots of terrain/Rey walking, then go right into the final shot.

Though, I do prefer to have Kylo's POV first, then go straight into Rey holding out the saber in the next scene. If this film is indeed going to go darker, it needs to start darker.
