Should Episode VIII continue the tradition of a ship passing over the screen after the opening crawl

    For some reason I have always envisioned a dark blue/purple planet with a small low flying shuttle or group of ships for an ST movie intro.

    Emphatically YES. All SW films that are supposed to be* a full part of the Skywalker Saga should have episode numbers, a crawl, and the same style of intro. Spin off films go crazy and do their own thang - start however you like.

    *TFA is supposed to be a part of the saga but at the moment I'm not seeing it - doesn't even have episode 7 on the case.

    Of course!

    Kylo's personal shuttle carrying Phasma, Kylo and Hux to Snoke's mobile command centre seems most likely for an opening shot, in my opinion.

    I kind of like the Falcon being the opening shot ship as it approaches Ach-To. Figure it's about time that the mascot ship gets to be the one to start us off.

    That would be a nice change. It flies past the screen really close up and then the shot pans out to reveal the Falcon.

    What about if they started in Republic captial system that got destroyed by SK base with all the wrecks of Republic fleet in space and then all of a sudden a massive Republic cruiser with a small fleet comes out to hyperspace and inspects the damage. We could then be introduced to the rumoured Laura Dern character who then requests an audience with Leia and the resistance.

    This is just a marketing/design thing. If you recall, the OT did not put episode numbers on packaging, either. The important thing is that Episode VII is in the opening crawl, a tradition that Episode VIII will continue; along with a pan and a passing ship, I'm sure.

    Crawl:

    It will resume what we've seen from the 3rd act of The Force Awakens.

    Then Ship...

    I see 3 possibilities:

    A - We see the ending of The Force Awakens from a different perspective, Captain Phasma's perspective. It starts with a John Doe's small ship that enters Starkiller's planet atmosphere to pick up Phasma and when they escape, they track down The Millenium Falcon to Arch-To.

    B - The ship is Hux's. We see him and Kylo leaving the Starkiller base as it exploses.

    C - The ship is Hux's. We see him and Kylo approaching Snoke's base.

    After that scene, then we catch up with Rey and Luke.

    I have the feeling we will see The Force Awakens from a different character's perspective.

    That's just because the packaging for the OT was redesigned when the prequels came out. Or maybe it was the special edition? Either way, differences are normal for something that has lasted this long, imo. Someday in the future I'm sure there will be a new repackaging/redesign for the entire saga.

    (And people will object when it happens, I'm sure. ;) )

    Which makes me wonder how that will be incorporated into the opening sequence should the movie LITERALLY begin from Rey extending the saber to Luke. What ship could that be? Unless, as Iv'e heard, it could begin with something like Hux transporting an Injured Kylo to Snoke then, cut to Ahch-To. That however doesn't add up to RJ stating that the film will begin the moment after TFA left off.

    Jon Schemp on "Collider Videos" had a good speculation. After " A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away..." It opens like "Rouge One" and cuts straight to the Falcon approaching Ahch-to and we get a compressed version of Rey going up the stairs and meeting Luke and giving the light saber and then Luke saying "it's time to finish your training" and then the screen goes dark and then we get the classic intro with music and "Star Wars Episode VIII " and then the opening crawl.
    A period of time could have passed which would allow a better description in the opening crawl and both Rey and Kylo would have finished their training. We would still keep the tradition of the opening crawl panning down to a planet and ship, but further along in the story, yet still staring off directly where TFO left off.

    Yea I just watched that video today. I think that would be a cool but respectable change to the tradition. The tv show/series approach. No beginning credits yet instead it starts with a short prelude. I kind of like it.

    Sure it does. Hux and Kylo heading to see Snoke could be happening at the exact same point in time as Rey handing the saber to Luke. After seeing the scene with Kylo and Hux it can go straight to Rey handing Luke the saber.
