JJ has said that he will give the Big 3 their proper sendoff in Episode 7. Now let me preface by saying I want this trilogy to be about the new generation, but should Han, Luke and Leia stick around as secondary players to keep a nice continuity with the OT? I worry that part of the Big 3 dies or retires in Episode 7, and then we are left in Episode 8 & 9 with just the new generation and we have the same problem of the new characters not resonating with the fans totally. Having the Big 3 play secondary roles in the WHOLE trilogy lets the new characters continue the OT story, but still gives the fans our beloved OT characters sprinkled here and there.

Great point. The prequels had no group to follow before them, and with a very complicated and mixed group of characters, it couldn't be like the OT. I see Han and Leia going out in Episode 8, as a final defense for the new heroes, going out with the last great battle of their lives, and Luke lives and dies like Yoda, after having either helped rid the galaxy of evil or creating the true new Jedi Order.

I think the Big 3 will fade out over the course of the trilogy. I don't think JJ (or Disney for that matter) want them given the bum's rush out the door, especially when there's ZERO need to do it. I would expect Han to die in Episode 7 or early in 8. Then I'd expect Leia to probably die and I could actually see Luke dying in Episode 9. See Luke has the most answers as far as the Jedi and Sith (Vader and Palps) are concerned, which may be needed for the plot. I think they'll get less importance in 8 & 9 of course but I believe the ST is the transition to the "reboot" which will occur in Episodes X-XII which will solely focus on the new heroes and villains.

    All just conjecture though.

I say no. Or, at the very least, I see them having a secondary role for the most part in TFA (possible exception with Luke having a major role), and roles further diminished for VIII and IX.

This trilogy should be about the new generation, with the older generation featured to some extent. The defunct EU overused the characters way too much, and I don't wish the film series to do the same. And even then, with the overuse, the EU still managed to make the next generation prominent.

I think the OT trio will be important at times but often serving in important places with little screen time. Han is on the bridge like admiral Ackbar. Leia gives a speech. Luke will likely have the most screen time serving as analogous role to both Obi-Wan and Yoda. Mon Mothma did not have a big part but we know who she is.

I think all three should survive till episode 9 depending on how many loved ones they lose along the way it would be fitting for them to see it through to the final chapter of the trilogy I wonder will the solos children & luke son Ben appear in the next two movies.

I would like to see Mark Hamill throughout the ST, his role could be needed as a plot device and as the last Jedi in the galaxy it would make sense.
Han and Leia, sure I like them both and I wouldn't mind to see them in VIII and IX, but I think their story arc was somehow completed in RotJ.
Maybe JJ and Kasdan wrote/changed some things in the script, to make the characters interesting again with a plausible story.

I agree with you,I don't think any other jedi could take the lead like Luke Skywalker, Han Solo & Leia Organa Solo, I know it might take away the spotlight from the young actors making their name in this franchise but sometimes these three lead by example, it's star wars anything could happen.

    My though is as Follows

    Episode VII: The Force Awakens
Han - Very important as he will be ushering in the new trio...He will die at the end of VII
Leia - Will have a smaller role yet still important as she will in charge of the Resistance....In a sense she ill be the equivalent to say Cornelius Fudge in Harry Potter but without going crazy and being replaced... Or maybe she does.
Luke - Will probably have the shortest screen time in this film as he will probably not be seen until the final act. but he will be the Yoda/Dumbledore/Gandalf of the trilogy. So to me he will be more important for the next two VII and IX. I do think we will see him fight albeit for a short time. He will embarrass Kylo Ren as Ren's power is insignificant next to Luke's. that will cause or Sidious character (probably Snoke) to come fourth and try to take down the Resistances most powerful tool. Jedi Master Luke.

    Episode VIII:
Han - Dead (perhaps Ford will have some kind of part as a spirit voice something)
Leia - slightly more important now that the story has begun.
Luke - He will actively be on the falcon with our trio training Finn, or Rey or both. However the second film needs to leave us feeling hopeless. The resistance will take a big hit. Luke's power will be shown as huge and he'll seem unbeatable. But the First Order will pull out a way to end Luke or at least capture him. in other words Luke will be in incapacitated or dead through episode IX. I think Dead/Force Ghost. but the true power of the first Order will be revealed and or heroes will feel defensless.

    Episode IX
Han Dead and probably not any role unless more spirit voice dialogue or something happens. He will probably just not be apart of it except through mention after his death though
Leia - Devastated but Very Important in this final showdown. She will show her true colors as a Jedi Master. She has been hidden all this time and now that Luke is gone she need to reveal herself as the true Grand master
Luke - A force ghost that will guide Leia and the others to victory

In conclusion I think the Original trio will play a big prt in this trilogy but the focus will still be on Rey Finn and Poe primarily

I've been trying to come up with an answer to this myself. I keep trying to use the PT characters and their influence on the OT as a guide, but that is complicated by the fact that the PT came after the OT and that there aren't as clear main characters as there are in the OT.

    Anyways:
Obi-Wan is clearly a main character, and he dies in 4 but is in 5 and 6 also.
Yoda is main character enough, and he skips 4 but is in 5 and 6.
The emperor is a main character, and he is only briefly in 5 and then in 6.
Padme is a main character and she doesn't even make it out of 3.
Anakin is in 4,5 and 6.

The only main characters from the PT that are even in ANH are Vader and Obi-Wan, and then the supporting characters from the PT, Yoda and the Emperor, don't make their first appearances until ESB.

I don't know, I don't think more than one of the big 3 make it past 8. Definitely no one survives 9. Only the new characters are left after that to bridge the gap to 10.

That would be my bet. Or, to keep things interesting, they'll pull a LoTR, and a apparent death in one movie brings back one of the OT legacy characters in an ep 9 twist.

I think the idea that each of these movies will have one or more of the Magnificent Seven (Luke, Han, Leia, Lando, Chewie, Threepio, and Artoo) killed off is going to make the whole series a total downer. One or two strategic deaths could have some emotional impact, but it would be kind of cliched and depressing if NONE of them were able to just live a life without being murdered or dying in battle.

short answer no, I think they did enough to maintain continuity with the O.T so these charters are still active and around it all but they should probably shift the focus to the new Sequel cast and faze out the old school cast (with the exception of Luke)
