Should KOTOR have taken place later in the timeline?

There's long been controversy surrounding KOTOR seeming to asthetically, technologically, and setting-wise, resemble the movies far more than Tales of the Jedi. I feel like this could have been dealt with by having KOTOR take place during the New Sifh Wars, which were already established to have taken place much closer to the movies than TOTJ does.

Aesthetically, I don't really care that much. Star Wars is more fantasy than sci-fi, and that's part of the genre.

Story-wise, I think it's better to have it set further back, so as to not interfere with other stories- unless, of course, the writers did want to work it more into the saga.

    yeah. what he said.

I think Aesthetic is huge to Star Wars.
Star Wars has it's own look and feel about it.
And when things stray too far from it (part of the PT) it stops "feeling" or "looking" like Star Wars.
It's one of my own personal issues with those films. And it creates questions of uniformity etc that are far too tedious.
That isn't to say they SHOULDN'T push Star Wars in new directions, but big risks have bigger rewards and failures...

I think one of the best things about TFA was it's ability to nail the aesthetic of Star Wars. It looks like a star war.
Which, was good and bad given a few lazy writing choices (STARKILLER BASE).

It's like in GOT where they are essentially using the same technology (more or less) that their ancestors did hundreds of years ago.
It's irrelevant because fantasy and blast is cool yo.

It's set in a time that causes it to interfere with TOTJ. I'm saying that should have been set far away from both TOTJ and the movies so that it wouldn't inferfere with either.

I don't know much about TOTJ, but if that's the case I'd agree. At least for the old canon (which, obviously, is where KOTOR lies right now).

I say no. The Old Republic Era is so much freer, without the Skywalkers and the Empire. KOTOR felt magical and like the golden age, when Jedi were less proud and the galaxy still was mysterious.

Aesthitically it definitely bothered me in the EU canon that Exar Kun and Ulic's stories are so close to the events of KOTOR. That's a lot of evolution for an already space-faring universe to have in forty years, even with the weight of three wars to advance things forward. I think there should've been a decent hundred years between the two events just to show that time has passed and technology has changed. It also wouldn't have hurt the timeline at all, since the entire 5,000 BBY-3,5000 BBY is such a blip in the EU history and nothing truly happens that matters to the mainline movies for another 2,500 years. Plus it would make that massive period of time feel so much smaller.

That said, Star Wars isn't meant to be experienced like a true sci-fi story so it hardly matters. It's space wizard fantasy. It didn't hurt anything, and especially doesn't now.
