Traditionally in Star Wars, the main protagonist loses a limb in the second film of the trilogy during a fight.

Prequel Trilogy Second Film (Attack Of The Clones) - Anakin's right arm is severed by Count Dooku.

Original Trilogy Second Film (The Empire Strikes Back) - Luke's right hand is cut off by Darth Vader.

Sequel Trilogy Second Film (Episode VIII) - Rey's right hand/arm/foot/leg to be sliced/chewed off?!

I'd say Kylo loses his hand and/ore Luke loses his other human arm making him question his humanity similar to his dad because Rey losing her arm would be against protocol as it's more men that lose their sh#t.

I know, I was just trying to say that I don't think Rey would lose a limb in VIII for those reasons I said.

Okay I'll bite. If Rey is a skywalker then yes, she should lose a limb.
If she isn't Skywalker, then no, let Kylo lose one. He wants to be more like grandpa anyway.

I see it more of a skywalker thing than a protagonists thing.

Actually that sounds about right. Whoever had their arm chopped off last time should be the chopper this time. So unless Luke slices Rey during training, I believe Luke will be the one to take out Kylo's arm. It's always an older generation who slices off the newer generation anyway.

Either way, someone will most likely lost a limb in this film. But consider this for a second everyone...

Anakin lost his limb because he was foolish and thought he could handle a stronger opponent in Count Dooku and this was his downfall because he was headstrong.
Luke lost his hand because he was foolish and did not listen to Yoda and Obi-Wan and let his emotions get in the way and this was his downfall.
Kylo has already been beaten by Rey in TFA and his downfall was the Force opposed his betrayal to the dark side. Could his scar on his face be his hypothetical "reminder" like the loss of limbs of both Anakin and Luke to remind them of who they really are?

Anakin was reminded to be stronger
Luke was reminded that giving into the dark side would mean killing his own father when he saw they were the same
Kylo will be reminded of the decisions he made and has to make an ultimate decision.

No, I think this means that Rey will be spared a loss of limb for one Star Wars film unless Snoke or someone else causes bodily harm to her. For the fact that Kylo had to kill his father though, he will not be spared for his decisions and instead will be consumed by evil and eventually brought down by his actions. It will be a very sad ending for the story of Ben Solo, but it will come to pass eventually unless he decides it's not too late to do good and turn back again like his grandfather and uncle did before him. It is a weird arc to go from father to son to nephew, but it may show that the Force always finds a way of turning even the worst back to normal again no matter what they have done in their past.

Give me your opinions on my theory.

The most recent reddit "spoiler" pointed to POE losing a limb (a hand, shot by Phasma). I think this signals an overall messing around with the traditionally set patterns. I think the writers might go in another direction and -not- chop off Rey. I think they'll try and "rhyme" in a different way and thus "start to make things right".

Only if she is a Skywalker, otherwise it should be Kylo Ren who gets the family tradition.(crossguard):p

Instead of losing a limb, I think it'd be more powerful to have Kylo defeat Rey by slicing the Skywalker legacy lightsaber in half. I know I'd certainly get a punch to the gut if I saw the most iconic lightsaber of three generations of Star Wars meet its end at the climax of Episode VIII.

Trying to blend @SKB 's idea and @Ganon136 's idea...

If the protagonist always loses a limb, and Kylo is the one who ends up taking the blow, can we speculate that Kylo's decision will be one that turns him good?

If so, what will happen to Rey?

I think that Kylo could cut off Rey's arm as a revenge from TFA just like how Anakin killed Dooku for cutting off his arm .

I don't think Rey should loose a limb. It makes sense with Anakin and Luke, because their stories mirror each other, and it's very symbolic for their characters. I don't want her story to mirror them too much from here on out, Jakku was fine, but I'm quite content if that's it.

But I do deny that someone should lose a limb! That's tradition. I liked what @Teemto Pagalies said about Poe being the one who gets it.

I like it! :) Like you I don't think she is going to lose any limbs, if anyone does it will be Kylo. I might be in the minority here but I don't think Rey will lose any limbs for two reasons; the first reason is based on the assumption she is a Skywalker, so go with me on this...if she is a Skywalker I don't think they would have her lose a limb just like her father and grandfather, it would be such a rehash. I would hope they could come up with something new and fresh. The second reason and why I really don't think she will lose a limb is that she is a "Disney Princess" now. Disney has so many new "female fans" because of Rey. I have two daughters who are all on board with Star Wars because our leading lady is the Hero. I love too, it's different. I believe they want to keep their princess pristine!

i think they should break tradition and keep all limbs intact, but if anyone is cruising for it, it's Kylo Ren.

what i hope happens is that Luke is about to do it, remembers the path of the Skywakers before him, and decides to spare him.
that'd be poetic enough for me.

    Rey's gonna be just fine.

Disney Princess's don't loose limbs. Rey is just to darn perfect in every way so I don't see her loosing an appendage any time soon.

I'm conflicted on this one. On the one hand, I do want her to suffer a serious setback (being the second act of the trilogy and all that) and her losing to a more powerful and focused Kylo would make sense. On the other hand, her losing a limb might end up feeling like just doing a callback for its own sake. Heck I kind of felt that way about Anakin losing his arm in AOTC even.

I kind of think that having her get seriously injured/maimed, but in a different way, might be a good compromise. Like Kylo intentionally scarring her face up like she scarred his in TFA. That could be cool I think.
