What I do want to see: Star Wars. Something new, with new characters, new places, etc., but still with the familiar Star Wars feel.
What I don't want to see: GOT with Star Wars characters. No nudity. No PG-13 for language.

I agree with many on here with the inability of D&D to do character and how they couldn't continue the great story writing without GRRMs writing to from. I actually think season 7 was much worse than season 8.

What it means for star wars based on Game of Thones is they can definitely do amazing specticle which should be fantastic for the new series, but you have to be concerned about their ability to oversea a great story. Doubly so if they are focusing on Sith and Jedi in the past.

I'm not concerned with this if they have a good story to tell. The issue with Thrones is there wasn't a story to get to the end. I liked the Finale, because they knew how it ended. It was the getting there the last two seasons that was the issue. To be fair, if it were easy to do Martin would have finished the books a long time ago.

That's the problem with adapting stories that aren't finished. Game of Thrones is a partially complete story that the author knows the end, but he's not sure how to get there.

The biggest question I have for this D&D series is who is creating the story? I'm not sure these guys are original story creators.

D&D are writing it are they not? Them writing it is my biggest concern. If they get some great writers on and if they actually spend a great deal of time in pre-production working not only on the script but the visuals as well then I would have less concern.

Modern films need to go back and learn from Pixar. Spend two years working on the story and the pre-vis before you go near a camera on a set. It is all too rushed right now and that actually ends up costing them money and producing messy terrible films.

I think so? At least that was what was initially described, but we still don't know much about what they're planning on doing. Are they writing for a story that's already been developed?
This is so very true. I'm happy Lucasfilm is pumping the breaks after IX. Disney really pushed those films out way too fast. It's a miracle how well they've turned out, but time helps.

Personally I'm more in the neutral-to-positive leaning about the ending, but out of the 10-15 people I know watched the finale only me and one other person were satisfied with the ending. And that was because he won the Game of Thrones betting pool. Mind you, these people were a mix of: having read the books and watched every episode, having only watched the show, and having only watched this final season. Only one of them I can say for sure actually uses Reddit. But when all of them felt the same way for different reasons, I start to think that maybe it's not just some mad people online.

The audience may not be right, but they feel cheated of something, and I think that's important.

All I can say from this is that I hope other fantasy shows in the work (Witcher, LotR, WoT, etc) learn from this and take those lessons to heart.

I thought that since D&D were seemingly working with RJ, I thought it'd mean that D&D do the outline and pre-production stuff while RJ wrote the actual script and filmed the movie. But yeah, there are a lot of pieces still missing.

I thought RJ was doing a separate trilogy. Is there some news I missed that they are now working on the same trilogy?

I THINK there was some news about them working together or something, but I have no idea about that now and it's not important enough to me to find out. I'm sure there'll be an official announcement about it either later this year or next year.

B&W + Johnson had a "closed room" (quote from article) meeting to discuss their upcoming Star Wars works. I think that was scheduled to happen in early May, or so.

We don't know any more about this, except that only 3 new SW films have been scheduled releases; some fans, (TLJ haters mainly), has taken this as proof that Johnson's trilogy has been scraped and that he has graciously been allowed to help B&W with writing their trilogy. This is complete hearsay, of course, and Johnson has re-confirmed as recently as April (IIRC) that he's still working on conceptualizing and pre-prod for his trilogy.

Now, what I found interesting in Kennedy's interview on this stuff was her talking about "there will be a hiatus after RoS, as we are working very hard on the next SW saga" (quote from memory). She said "saga", (twice IIRC)... That might mean nothing, but to me it opens the possibility that B&W's trilogy & Johnson's trilogy are supposed to be part of the same (9 films?) new saga, in which case it would make all kinds of sense that they sat down and discussed things. Again, this is conjecture only, but Kennedy did say "saga" :)

Agreed. I enjoyed getting a new Star Wars movie every year and initially I was disappointed to see that it would no longer be the case. Ultimately, though, I am happy they are taking their time with this new series, as I think it'll lead to a better-quality product in the end. Especially in light of things like the GoT/D&D backlash and TLJ being so divisive (even though I enjoyed TLJ personally); Disney probably needs time to re-evaluate things and to figure out their approach with the franchise going forward.

I haven't seen GoT myself, so I'm probably more neutral about D&D being in charge of the upcoming Star Wars movies than other people are. Still, the strong reaction a lot of people had to the GoT ending does have me a bit concerned. Here's hoping that D&D can learn from the backlash in time for their upcoming projects.

More generally, I am curious to see if the GoT reaction will influence what their role on Star Wars ends up being. Will they be directing the new films? Or will they be writing it? Or both? Neither? Will someone else be brought on board? Will this have any connection to the Rian Johnson series? So many questions. ;)

It's been relatively quiet on the D&D front. David Benioff and D.B Weiss did a Q&A session at the Austin Film Festival. The Twitter thread below kind of details how fortunate they were the show was a hit. Obviously, this Q&A is through a messenger, but there's plenty of reason to be concerned as a Star Wars fan if this is the way they operate.

Things are so confused now I don't think KK/Iger even know what's going on. My personal opinion is D&D are gone and Kevin Feige is in, for now anyway, just two more casualties in this apparently lethal game of musical chairs. If I'm wrong, I'd say the plan going forward had to have been settled on at least a full year ago and all of these people (RJ, D&D, KF) are being quietly slotted into their respective projects. But to me it seems more likely that Lucasfilm/Disney are in free-fall damage control and they'll just keep trying on hats until they feel safe.

Feige has way too much on his plate at Marvel to be running a series of Stat Wars films.
This is a bit hyperbolic. I'm sure by now Lucasfilm has some kind of plan about how to attack the future, but they're being smart and waiting until after this saga is over to make any definite announcements. If Rise of Skywalker does well then Lucasfilm could take a bigger risk on the next project. If it's a disaster i'm sure Disney would want to go a safer route.

I read some of that thread yesterday. It really irritated me. Now I havent seen the actual presentation, but people going off about a presentation where they appear to have been open and honest about learning while doing floors me. Damn they better have learned while they were moving forward. Really no TV series was ever the scope of GoT. You may not have liked the way it ended, but that doesnt change the work put into it and what they learned while doing it. Watch the documentary that was released after GoT ended and pay attention to the passion, the passion that B&W inspired in the people that worked on that show.

Are they the greatest match for Star Wars. I have no F'ing clue, but getting upset at them for being honest floors me. Also have to say the impressed George RR Martin enough for him to jump into it.

The very fact that we're talking about "if ROS does well" says everything for me. I don't think it will do very well, if it was any other movie with the same issues everyone would already be calling it a turkey. You skipped my other option :) the optimistic one. KF is 100% in, it was officially announced. I don't think it's hyperbole, looking at the flat-lining sales figures and declining general interest for SW, to say that this company has serious problems. I could be wrong, of course, and I would say it would be a good idea to spearhead 3 avenues 1) RJ for the Disney era fans (2) D&D for the hardcore fans (3) KF for the general audience; that's not a bad strategy! Maybe they're covering all bases.

Maybe to you, but I don't assume anything about a film until I see it. It looks like it's going to be a hit, but if critics hate the film it might hurt the box office.
We're getting off topic here, but there's no issues related to the production of the film. Rogue One and Solo on the other hand are examples of films that had issues.
It was announced he's co-producing a film with Kennedy. Anything else is just speculation.
Based on the pre-ticket sales and social media reaction to the new trailer there's not much real evidence there's declining interest. Heck, even the people who hate Star Wars can't stop talking about how much they hate it.
I actually liked the way it ended. My gripes with Game of Thrones were just on display in the final season. Some of that is on GRRM. My bigger take away is that they don't seem to be open to collaborative feedback. I'm not talking about feedback from fans. Good on them for ignoring fans, but it's been reported elsewhere they don't really listen to constructive feedback from peers. If that's the case I can't seem them lasting long with Lucasfilm.

    Off Topic

    1) I have to disagree and say you have that backwards, critics have zero impact these days, the critics can love a movie to pieces, it's the audience that decides if it's a hit or not, regardless of the critics. ROS has to be a huge boxoffice hit for them to go forward with confidence.

    2) The negative buzz around Solo certainly effected its box office. ROS has many more issues swirling around it, such as not having a story going in and lackluster response to the teaser posters and trailers, as well as negative backlash to TLJ and Solo and Resistance flopping, all signs that would cast doubt on a sequel. I mean, would you have financed Matrix 4 in 2004?

    3) The pre-sales all come from one source, they later amended it to only cover the first hour of sales and they said the same thing about Solo and that turned out to be wrong. ROS merch is already on clearance in many places (I see SW merch in clearance bins every time I go shopping anywhere) and the declining internet search interest is also well documented.

    4) You're going to fix that from "hate" to "love" (obviously just a typo) but I think you got it right the first time. "Space horses" has already gone viral and there's been a pretty harsh backlash to the trailer.

For the record, although I don't like the direction KK/Iger went with, I just think SW lacks the broad appeal to maintain a yearly presence in the market; I also think the uptick in interest in "nerd stuff" was artificially generated and there really isn't that huge of an audience deeply invested in SFF franchises long-term and we're just seeing the inevitable decline in general interest.

    Back On Topic

What does this mean for D&D? I think these issues are very real and they've been put in spin until Disney sees if SW feature films are worth the investment. At the same time, I think KK is still making plans, hence the apparent confusion.

I won't drag this further off topic, but I'll close by saying I'm not swayed by "internet reality." There's no real backlash against "space horses." Negativity is easy to find on the internet and much of the time is far removed from the general public and fandom.

"Internet reality" ruled the last season of Game of Thrones a disaster, but it won the Outstanding Drama emmy because people voted for it.
