The reason I thought about this was I watched the 40th Anniversary Special to Saturday Night Live last night, as they essentially brought back every cast member from the last 40 years. They could have done the show in 2 ways: Make it original and use the cast to do new skits, or do the same old thing using the popular recurring characters the same way we remembered them? They choose option 2 as all they did bring back the popular characters in the same skits updated in 2015, and I thought it was sort of sad to watch. It was a nostalgia trip, but a bad one in that.

So I thought of Luke, Leia and Han and their return in TFA. Comparing that to the Saturday Night Live Special, which would you prefer? A developed Luke, Leia and Han whose characters will be different then they are 30 years later? Or do you want the Luke, Leia and Han you remember from the OT, and the only thing different is they are 30 years older?

I expect they'll be different for sure, older, more developed, but not developed so much that they'll be completely different characters. Just the same characters we've known with 30 years of experiences and wisdom gained between RotJ and TFA.

I'm eager to read the books which are coming down the pike that will help inform how they became the characters we will see in TFA.

I guess the point of my thread is the safe route is to keep them the same. There is a risk if you do develop them and fans won't like what they have done with them and it may backfire. Its the ultimate catch 22 for JJ.

It is, and they must have worked really hard on the dialogue and character mannerisms and acting etc to make the thirty year gap believable AND entertaining.

I can see that concern. As it pertains to anything, but specifically Star Wars, it seems to me, given the last 16 years, that there is always a risk when it comes to anything new. IMM Star Wars is an escape from real things to complain about in the real world and should not be something to detract from. Was the PT what I thought it would be? No. Did I embrace it? Yes, warts and all. The PT (and the paradigm shift it made) made my perception of the SWU change and I expect that the ST will do the same thing (with an equally powerful paradigm shift).

I expect the big 3 characters to be different in TFA (and the ST) from how they were in RotJ (and the OT), just based on the passage of time IU. Will their portrayal in TFA backfire? In the minds of some, perhaps. IMM, I am preparing for the "reality" of the ST (and the OT heroes appearing in it) to be different from the imaginary version I have or once had in my mind. Perhaps there will be things I don't like, but it will be up to me to adapt to the new reality as opposed to rigidly holding on to my old perceptions. With TFA, given their collective resumes, I trust JJ Abrams, KK, and co, to do right by the previous trilogies of the saga and the big 3 in particular.

I think while it is realistic for people to develop and change to some extent over the course of 30 years some characters will have changed more than others.
I can see it falling in this order..

    1. Luke Skywalker - the OT character with the most development from the OT to the ST because of his growth with the force and what places physically and mentally that may have taken him. Also continuing to mentally deal with the events that took place on the Death Star during ROTJ.

    2. Leia Organa(Solo?) - I think her development will actually be closer to Luke's than some might give her credit for. With the leadership of the OT Rebellion aged she will be in even more of a leadership role and more importantly could have quite a bit of force ability by now.

    3. Han Solo - I think for the most part Han will be Han but more mature and experienced. You wont see him go rushing head on into battles anymore but he will still be the smart ass Han we all know and love.

Developed, with an explanation left to dialogue and the new canon to reveal the story as how they came to be like they are.

If rumors prove true, Luke is a bit crazy, Han is a dad who's actually a bit cautious, and Leia is relegated to hiding somewhere as a result of the war. Love it or hate it, those situations sound better than just a rehash of their OT characters.

My story for the sequels would have been more grounded. Han would be radically different from the guy we met in A New Hope, he'd be a well dressed, respected general within the rebel forces and frown upon the Han of old. He'd no longer be the "cool" character and he'd be more in the background.

That is the sort of guy Han would naturally become following Return Of The Jedi in my opinion. The fact he's still piloting the Falcon in the new trilogy is a bit silly imo. It'll make for a fun film but it'll leave a few people wondering if he was stuck back in carbonite for the last 30 years..

I really hope a lot of effort has gone into the big three's characters, and they're not just parodies with glorified cameos. I want to feel as if they're constantly within reach for the new characters, and not in a galaxy far far away.. I hope they have a significantly more important role than Leonard Nimoy in that last Star Trek movie.. That was basically pointless.
