Well we are going to have to agree to disagree on the accent.

The way I see it, there aren't many that even use her language on Jakku. The foundation of her accent was built by then and it never would have evolved given her limited interactions with others.

I don't get that sense at all. This seems like more wishful thinking. Even if that's true... So what?

I'm glad Rey's background wasn't revealed to be of significance to past characters. Abrams would be smart to keep it that way. We've done well with the amount of incest provided, let's widen the circle now.

I've been worried we might get an insufficient amount of lens flares in this next episode though.

I think the accent argument could work in the exact opposite way that you're referring to. Young Rey sounds like she has an almost American style accent and then she's left with Unkar Plutt and she picks up his British style accent.

Except Unkar Plutt, the person she's left with, who both speaks her language and has mostly the same accent.

The Dark Side doesn't show you the truth, but your worst fear.

Rey only received news of her parentage from 2 sources.

    The Dark side Cave:

let's remember that Luke warned her from going there...and

Rian Johnson on the cave: ''The idea that if there’s a Jedi Temple up top, the light, it has to be balanced by a place of great darkness''

    The 2nd time:

From Mr Dark side himself- Kylo Ren

Do you wanna know the truth about your parents?

Kylo Ren: ''They were filthy junk traders who sold you off for drinking money. They're dead in a paupers' grave in the Jakku desert. You have no place in this story. You come from nothing. You're nothing. But not to me. Join me. Please.''

So is she being set-up by the dark side in order to expose her fear and become vulnerable?

    Snoke did it to Ben.

    Sideous did it to Anakin.

They prey on your worst fears.

Filthy junk traders? I think not. Dead on Jakku? I think not.

We haven't heard the full truth yet.

No, she receives it from one.
    Herself.

Ren says she knows, and maybe she's always known.
Then REY, not Ren, reveals that the were nobodies.
Ren elaborates, pouring it on extra thick perhaps, but Ren doesn't reveal anything. Rey says it.

To be fair, its speculation on her part. I still think her parents were/are "nobodies" but there is still no evidence really. Kylo could have been filing in the blanks for her.

I'm just tired of how people are mis-remembering that whole scene as if Kylo says it first.

I find one of the most perplexing things in this section of Kylo's comments to Rey is "You have no place in this story."

I would say, if people can or do accept Kylo's comments to Rey as truthful, that particular assertion is still difficult to accept, at least to me.

Rey clearly (to me) having a place in this story seems to negate Kylo's words, or, at the very least, reveal the destabilizing intentions behind his statements, and, even then, seem to draw them into reconsideration given that Dark Side bias.

While I can accept Rey as she seems to be presented in TLJ, I would still be wary of accepting Kylo Ren's words as perfectly honest and objective.

Had Ben Solo spoken them instead, I'd be more inclined to believe him.

But, at this stage, as Rey was compelled to see for herself, Kylo is still Kylo, and still proceeding, in action and speech, from the Dark Side.

There's two things to Rey's backstory mystery. The who and the why. The where and what we already know. (Jakku, abandoned)

Kylo knows Rey knows so lying about the who is pointless to me. They share the mental connection thanks to Snoke. So lying about the who would get him nowhere fast.

A better lie about the who would be telling her she was important, once, but was abandoned and thrown away from once important lineage. "That Jedi you idolize and thought would save you? He was the one who threw you away." But that only works if she doesn't know the truth of the who.

The why, "You have no place in this" is something he can say because she has openly said she doesn't know her place. It's masterful manipulation.
The kind of manipulation you'd learn from someone like Snoke.
If she knows her parents weren't important and she can't figure out why they'd leave her...it makes sense for Kylo to stoke that part of her insecurity not the who.

Can't lie about the who, but you can lie about the why.

Can't agree with you fully. Yes you are right during the conversation, he asks if she knows, but she ONLY knows because of the dark side cave. Where she went to ask who her parents were.

Dark side deception. Goes back to what I was saying.

Because in TFA, who her parents were ? and who she is? she termed ''Classified'' ;)

But the cave doesn't show her anything. It tricks her into thinking that she'd get some sort of resolution but at the very moment she's about to get answers the cave basically shows her a middle finger, laughs at her face and then the whole illusion is gone.

The cave in ESB didn't deceive. It reveals ugly truths and deepest fears.
Vader was Luke's greatest fear of turning to the dark and the ugly truth is that Vader was his father (foreshadowed).

The cave didn't actually tell her anything. She literally says she thought she'd get answers here. "I was wrong."
She kind of got an answer and that answer was "they don't matter, it's about you"

Saying she knows because of the dark side cave isn't accurate either. She doesn't learn anything about her parents from it. She seeks information but is given nothing.

It's called repression and denial. She represses her memories of them and denies the truth because no little girl wants to accept that her parents discarded her like an old droid and left her with Unkar.

Who is she is a different story than who her parents are. And that's a main theme Rian Johnson is pushing. You are not your parents and your future is bound to whomever your parents are. You don't have to be a Skywalker to be important.

She says she's classified because it's easier to say that than "I'm an orphan who was sold to an abusive junk dealer as a child for drinking money."
    It's all a coping mechanism.

Maz as much as tells her that her future is forward, not back. The cave plays with her then basically tells her the same thing

I still think he can lie about the who, because at that moment, they were face to face.

Rey would not have needed to use the force hack to see if he was lying. That scene is well constructed and should be revisited.

I totally agree with the rest.
    --- Double Post Merged, Apr 13, 2018, Original Post Date: Apr 13, 2018 ---
Exactly my point. Dark side deception at it's best. It basically showed her...no one. So in her head, she was at that point, a nobody.
    --- Double Post Merged, Apr 13, 2018 ---

And here is the problem with TFA and TLJ, and having 2 directors, with seeming ''carte blanche'' visions creating what is supposed to be a linear trilogy. I truly believe there had to have been discussions on what surprises were going to be in store for this trilogy.

LFSG, Johnson, Abrams, Kasdan..had to have it all worked out from the get go. I don't see Abrams showing something like a very expensive ship drop Rey off and leave, then johnson undoing that, then Abrams going back to it. makes no linear sense for this trilogy.

I mean a simple demand from Johnson to Abrams like the one to have R2 instead of BB8 go with Rey and Chewie created some memorable TLJ scenes. I imagine the same has happened in return. Abrams is back for a reason. (thats for another thread). I just don't see Rey being a nobody. Even if she was convinced to believe that herself.

    There's a surprise in store.

"That lightsaber was Luke's, and his father's before him and now it calls to you!"

Im really not saying she's a skywalker...

Just that the statement is extremely important as to her importance. ;)

No that is not deception and he can't lie about it. He has no reason to lie about the who.
As I said before, a more damning lie would be that Luke WAS her dad or grandpa or something. That the good guys gave up on her like that.
If JJ retcons that part into a lie, it becomes a shitty story.
She went looking for answers about her parents.
The cave said, they don't matter. She's important without them.

She has to accept that her past is not important now. She has to overcome her history of coming from nothingness. No big reveal of royal lineage (that quite frankly Spaceballs absolutely nailed the absurdity of).

Agreed, I think Rey would have been jumping for joy if she found out Luke was indeed her father. Whereas for Luke having Vader to say "I am your father" was the worse thing for Luke to hear. However, my one question is if they were really drunks. How did they manage to get off Jakku? Was she that valuable? To get a ship off planet?

IMO she wouldn't be THAT happy given the whole hour before the "reveal" in the film and then he has to explain: 1. Why he tried to kill Kylo and 2. why he abandoned her. But that she's a Skywalker is more important to the lie. it gives her meaning and purpose without her having to find it herself. Oh a Skywalker? Here to save the galaxy. Easy for her to decipher her purpose.

Do they leave planet? or do they just leave the area with Unkar? Could they have just gone to a different town? Or perhaps that's not their ship and they worked under someone...

Kylo is not lying according to Johnson and:

Dooku "the truth ? What if I told you that the Republic was now under the control of a dark lord of the Sith?" "Join me Obi-Wan and together we will destroy the Sith"

Vader "I am your father" "join me and together we can rule the galaxy as father and son"

Kylo "They were filthy junk traders. Sold you off for drinking money. They're dead in a pauper's grave in the Jakku desert" "Rey I wan you to join me, We can rule together and bring a new order to the galaxy"

since 1980 the truth has always been used by dark siders to lure the heroes to the dark side in the second movie of every trilogy, it's like poetry.

Truth can be a powerful weapon.

Maybe the ship is a "public transport" to another town on the planet:

"Ergel's Bar was a cantina in Cratertown, a settlement on the Western Reaches desert world of Jakku. Knockback Nectar, a favorite drink of humans and Uthuthma was sold in Ergel's Bar."

"Knockback Nectar was a strong alcoholic beverage made and served on the desert planet Jakku. It was the only drink served by the bartender Ergel at his bar on Jakku, and was given to customers in an oil can"

At this point, I don't care who her parents are, the debate is exhausting. The answer we got in TLJ was good enough for me, if JJ changes it then so be it... BUT this MTV guy talking about how Simon Pegg, "confirmed what he had long heard"... just doesn't seem right. What exactly did he hear or more importantly, who did he hear it from? Because leading up to the release of the film, every indication seemed to be that JJ and Rian were on the same page in regards to her parents were, and it was even said as such in a few articles. I'm sure this guy has his sources and all, but I don't see how his account can be so drastically different from the ones already released from similar outlets.

Also, something worth pointing out that could render this all moot and I'm sure this has been brought up in the thread already but different plans don't automatically mean a whole different lineage. JJ and Rian could've both had plans for her to be from no one of significance, and then Rian took it upon himself to make those people drunks who sold her off for drinking money... that being the part that differed from what JJ had in mind.
