Okay so the teaser to Rogue One was shown at the celebration not long ago, and one of things I noticed was the immense size of the Death Star. I understand stand that no scenes have been shot yet, but from what I can take from the footage the Death Star looks bigger than a small moon. Either it's just an artistic rendition for dramatic purposes, or It really is that huge.

    What do you guys think?

It depends how close to the planet (or moon) the station is, and the size of the celestial body you happen to be on. Also ice crystals in the atmosphere can have a magnifying effect. Look at our own world and the perigee-syzygy when it sometimes looks like an immense 'supermoon'.

The first Death Star has a diameter of between 140 and 160 kilometers or 90-100 miles.
For comparison, our moon has a diameter of 3474 km or 2159 miles.

The Death Star could also be in low-orbit - 800 km (500 mi)
The moon is 384,400 km (238,900 miles) away.

Lastly, take into account that the teaser was slapped together super fast and is just that, a teaser and may not be indicative of the final product.

And the most important factor: Artistic License.
The Director stated he wants us to feel the plight of these desperate people. There are no more wizards of mystic religions to come save them. The Death Star in the shot is literally 'larger then life' - The insurmountable odds they have no chance of overcoming, but must somehow prevail anyway or it will spell doom for the entire galaxy.

    Very nice post.

Only one question. What's your source for the diameter? I guess it's a Legends one? 'Cause I couldn't find a Canon one.

Some of the twitter reaction from inside the hall was speculating that the death star was built on the surface of the planet we are seeing and that this is it having not yet left close orbit/in atmosphere. Not sure if that was just a guess or was somehow implied/indicated during the presentation.

    The different sources state anywhere in-between 140 & 160

Do I care if it's 90 or 100 miles in Diameter?
    No
It's 'about that size' which is 'good enough' for me.
The reason they always settle on those numbers is because that's how big it would have to be for the surface to look flat when you're up close.

Although they say the second Death Star is NINE HUNDRED km. At no point watching the movie have I ever had the impression that Death Star II is 5.5x bigger then the first one! I am assuming they derive that number based on how big it would have to be for the Falcon to enter it and for the length of time it took to travel to and from the Main Reactor- although- that's why it's just better they don't mention stuff like that in the movies. It's not relevant to the telling of the story. To this day it's still the greatest space battle ever filmed. THAT is what's important :)

    ----------------------------------------------------

That sounds like a guess or someone making a joke at JJ Abrams expense (like how the Enterprise in his movie was built on the ground)

The Death Star is not on a planet's surface

And neither have I. Just stating what was reported from inside. I guess they were wrong.

I get that. It wasn't towards you. I don't want to give anything away since you haven't read it.
