    Don't get me wrong, Skellig island is amazing and on my bucket list. One of the great wonders of our world.. Which brings me to my point. Skellig Island IS on EARTH. Not in a galaxy far, far away.. Is anyone else bothered they didn't alternate it at all for a SW movie set in a SW universe? It takes me out of the SW universe and places Luke Skywalker here on Earth. :( I say bummer, dude.

    Did they film Tattoine's scenes in space or in Tunisia ?

    Not wanna spoil but Endor is in California, Hoth is in Norway ... It would cost a lot to bring filming crew to Mars or Jupiter.

    Just as the characters you see on-screen are all Earth-born human beings. You have to suspend your belief. In the case of Skellig, it's a magical place no matter how you look at it. That's the important thing.

    Wait! What? They didn't film the Death Star in space? Or Bespin up in the Clouds of Saturn?

    Thanks. You just ruined my childhood.

    Haha I like you, but you completely missed the point.. Why don't we just put Yoda in the White House next? How about that? :)

    You can say this about any movie if you really wanted to, in this genre. I get your point and what you are trying to get across, but what else do you want them to do? Actually when I see anything on Tatooine, I automatically think of all the behind the scenes footage and it makes me what to go visit. If I get a chance to go and see a site that Star Wars has shot on then it's 100% worth it.

    I know the saying goes "To Each their own", but I actually like knowing where they shoot at. Just me :)

    Yes, Knowing where they shoot is just fine! I just wanted them to alter it in any little way possible to create an atmosphere that feels different from our own. It could be as minuscule as two moons in the back ground or those flying Brith on Dantooine and Kamino... Anything to not make it feel like Luke Skywalker is just hanging out on Skellig after the Futbol game in Dublin. :)

    Missed the point. Just add Brith flying by or two moons in the distance and I'd be sold that Luke isn't just hanging out on Skellig drunk after a futbol game.

    Yes I think I still miss it after your explanation.

    Takodana, Jakku didn't look earthly to you ? Where's the difference with Skellig ?

    And here I thought Dagobah was shot in Louisanna. And they just left out the Gators.

    i kinda want to agree with @Klai Kenobi on this one: TFA was the first Star Wars movie in which i felt like scenes were definitely shot on Earth.

    that sounds dumb, i know. pretty much every movie ever has been shot on Earth, obviously. i guess the distinguishing thing though is that during the scenes at the Resistance base, i knew that was England. during Skellig Island, i knew that was in Ireland. Maz's castle, again, England.

    i think the main difference for my perception this time around is that i was actively following the production of TFA, so i saw all the leaked filming sites and everything. after seeing TFA and feeling slightly disappointed due to this very issue, i decided not to check out any production stills from Ep 8, or any other Star Wars movie due to come out. i want to keep Star Wars whimsical in my head, which i feel is something that TFA kinda lacked. whether that was the film makers fault or mine is a moot point; i'm just hoping that they manage this franchise well moving forward!

    It doesn't sound dumb if you don't take it out of context. I too watched the behind the scenes footage thinking it wouldn't matter because they would detail these worlds after post production AND show us more worlds that we've been wanting to see, but they really didn't. We pretty much saw everything in the trailers and behind the scenes that they had to offer. That with all the fan pleasing (wink) moments really took me out of the movie..

    Nahh.. the island looks amazing and I am glad they choose that place.

    Tatooine = TunĂsia
    Hoth = Norway
    Endor = California

    Earth locations dont make me feel to "terrestrial" when I am watching the movies.

    But they looked exotic enough to be believable as a GFFA...I get what the OP IS saying though because it looks like ireland weather (gloomy, etc.) and its too earth-like for a socalled water world...Kamino did it best to be exotic although that one was pure CGI...Now i think that they could have done something by adding to it visually to make it more exotic, but...bummer.

    I've removed the posts about NASA and it's funding because it is wildly off-topic. The OP doesn't deserve that. Normally I'd suggest that a new thread be started if people want to talk about the other subject, but not in this case. The inherently political nature of NASA's budget is off-limits here.

    If anyone has an issue or question, please contact me. But please don't respond to my post here. Let's just move on.

    But we haven't seen EP VIII yet, nor all of Ach-To. Only Rey walking to Luke.

    One of the things that amazes me about Star Wars is that most of the planets ARE "the" Earth. It just shows what a wonderful world we live on.

    What I really liked about the prequels is that they pretty much didnt hold back which is something they should have done for TFA onwards (please don't kill me)

    I'm fine with that earthly look, it wasn't like Star trek space exploration, single environment planets and a grounded look people can relate to was always part of the saga. I'm actually quite happy that they made those difficult filming sessions, they could have gone the easy way with green screens, but they chose to even expand their work there. The planets have always been part of the characterization not just the visual spectacle.
