    CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR EMPIRES END

I believe Snoke is a new alien species and a powerful dark side user from another galaxy. Palpatine had been seeking the origins of the Dark Side, and putting together a back-up plan and way out, should the Jedi ever defeat him. Palpatine believed the source of The Dark Side came from outside the known galaxy, beyond The Rim, somewhere in Unknown Space and he had been feeling a dark entity from this area for some time. This dark entity which I believe is Snoke had been watching the galaxy for some time. (The rise and fall of the Empire and he had been reaching out to Kylo Ren/Ben when he was still in his mothers womb.)

Obviously the Emperors back-up plan does not go as he wanted. He is killed and after the events of Empires End Rax is killed and Sloane leads the remnants of the Imperial forces out into Unknown Space toward this dark force/Snoke. Instead of the Emperors back up plan saving his Empire, it opened the door for an even greater evil to enter the known galaxy.

I believe that Snoke is someone who has been injured for a very long time - and with that, vulnerable.
He relied on the Sith to empower the Dark Side of the Force and create imbalance. This Dark Side kept Snoke alive.
Then when the Sith are made truly extinct Snoke simply has to act. And so he comes out of the shadows with his almost omnipotent knowledge and seeks to destroy the last Jedi and ensure that the Force remains in the Darkness forever.

There is a chance in my mind that the old Jedi once knew of Snoke and were the ones to injure him and banish him into the unknown regions/believe him to be dead.

    Or he's Darth Plagueis.

Him being an ancient sith would still work with my theory above, maybe he was banished or ran away to the unknown regions of space to hide. However, Im not sure about the Sith giving power to the dark side and he isn't Plagueis, as Pablo Hidalgo has stated numerous times.

I'm hoping by the end of this trilogy we're done with the legacy of the Empire. That doesn't mean peace. This could be a bridge to create a conflict between the galaxy vs. another galaxy. That's kind of what the First Order is... this is less of a civil war and more of another galaxy attempting to invade and conquer the Republic.

    I doubt he's Sith.

But that is what happens - when the Sith take over the Dark Side is stronger which is what causes imbalance.

    Yeah, I was kidding ;)

I always found the statement of balance interesting. Wouldn't the force being in balance imply an equal amount of Jedi and Sith? Anakin/Vader was the chosen one who apparently brought balance to the force by killing the Emperor but how is that balance? He just brought about imbalance on the side of good.

Balance is about the quality of the dark and light, good and evil, in the galaxy. When the Sith are about they empower the darkness to take over. When the jedi destroy the Sith the equality between light and dark is restored.

It's worth remembering that the Sith existed without the Jedi knowing for a thousand years and the Force wasn't out of balance. It only went out of balance when the Sith emerged and started the Clone Wars. At the end of ROTS there were two Jedi and two Sith but the Force was massively out of balance. When Anakin destroys the Sith in ROTJ, balance is restored as the evil force that was pushing darkness across the galaxy was destroyed, hope was restored and good and evil balanced.

The Jedi and Sith simply use the Force. The key thing is that it is called the balance of the Force.

Since the plagueis novel isn't canon anymore nothing says he's Muun, so plagueis could still be Snoke.
Hildago only said that Snoke isn't a Muun, so its technical still possible.

And I still hope it's true, even tho it wouldn't be that mind blowing anymore, because I thought about that so much in the last months its crazy.
I would still have a big smile on my face if he reveals himself as the dark lord who could cheat death.

    So much potential (emperor)

I agree. I want so much for Snoke to be Plagueis, and I don't think the door is closed on that quite yet. But...does Qui-Gon's dialogue to Yoda in the ROTS novel make sense if Plagueis is allowed to cheat death? It's very contradictory to have Qui-Gon on one hand saying that the path to immortality is through letting go of one's self, but on the other hand having Plagueis being able to cheat death doing the complete opposite of what Qui-Gon was preaching?

I definitely think Snoke comes from the Unknown Regions, and we are not able to decipher any more than that based on the given information at this time. I'm more interested in who is aboard the Eclipse. My money is on Thrawn. I think we've only seen a sliver of what the First Order is in TFA. That line about Thrawn knowing the Unknown Regions can't be mere coincidence, can it? We'll see...my only knock against my own thoughts are that the First Order seems more interested in going younger.

    The struggle continues...

    I too am a Plagueite.

In terms of your question, Plagueis wouldn't have actually cheated death in the sense of being immortal. He would just, like Maul, have survived what should've been fatal injuries through the unnatural power of the Dark Side.

But alas, it seems that Plagueis is a long shot now. Pablo did go very far to shoot down the theory. I asked him if Plagueis became Snoke and he said something along the lines of: if they were going to a premier they'd need two tickets. I'd be surprised if he was willing to go that far and Snoke still be Plagueis. Still, stranger things have happened and Plagueis makes so much sense.

If Pablo had known at that time that Plagueis is Snoke, then he would not have answered that question or give a sarcastic response that doesn't reveal anything at all. This is clerly not the case here. I'm sure Star Wars creators are fond of thewir fans creating new fan theories, but if something clearly is not the case, then they are not afraid to get things straight. Also, the funny thing about Darth Vader being Luke's father (and that Anakin is alive as a consequence) was allegedly revealed by George Lucas and David Prowse in 1977, shortly after the original Star Wars premiered, at least according to the book How Star Wars Conquered the Universe.

The force had been out of balance way before the events of the prequel trilogy. Thats why the Jedi didn't know about the Sith for so long.
    • Except from the canon book Tarkin. There was a sith shrine under the Jedi temple throwing the masters out of balance without their knowledge.
    • “The two of them were in Sidious’s lair, a small rock-walled enclosure beneath the deepest of the Palace’s several sublevels that had once been an ancient Sith shrine. That the Jedi had raised their Temple over the shrine had for a thousand years been one of the most closely guarded secrets of those Sith Lords who had perpetuated and implemented the revenge strategy of the Jedi Order’s founders. Even the most powerful of Dark Side Adepts believed that shrines of the sort existed only on Sith worlds remote from Coruscant, and even the most powerful of the Jedi believed that the power inherent in the shrine had been neutralized and successfully capped. In truth, that power had seeped upward and outward since its entombment, infiltrating the hallways and rooms above, and weakening the Jedi Order"
    Two Types of Balance:
    • Balance though coexistence
      • The Force is neither good nor bad, its like nature. The Jedi and Sith are a conduits for energy. Balance was brought by Anakin not just because he killed the Emperor but also because he hunted down and killed the Jedi as well. Think about The Ones on Mortis, The father (the force), the son (the dark side) and the daughter (the light side), all must exist in harmony together for balance to be achieved. Balance cannot exist without both light and dark.
    • Balance through symbiosis - What Lucas says he intended
      • Unless the balance of the force is more like a symbiotic relationship and a cancer. A symbiotic relationship is one which benefits both parties and in which neither is harmed, whereas a cancer takes without giving back, eventually causing the death of both parties. So getting rid of the Sith and all dark force users would bring balance because it is the evil (cancer) and improper use of the force that is bringing about imbalance and only though proper user of the force (a symbiotic relationship) can balance be achieved.

What happened was Prowse was interviewed and asked what he think may happen in V. Interestingly, without knowing it, he said he thought Vader will turn out to be Luke's father! This was before that was actually written by Lucas as in TESB drafts, Vader wasn't the father.

Yes he did, "@JediMasterPlant Snoke is not Plagueis. Dang. I lost the game." in response to "@pablohidalgo Let's play the 'yes or no' game (and break the Internet). Is Snoke Darth Plagueis?"

They didn't know about the Sith because the Sith were hiding in the shadows and hadn't revealed themselves.

That's partly how they blinded the Jedi, yes. But the Force wasn't out of balance until the Sith emerged:

I think it is obvious that [Qui-Gon] was wrong in Episode I and made a dangerous decision, but ultimately this decision may be correct. The “phantom menace” refers to the force of the dark side of the universe. Anakin will be taken over by dark forces which in turn destroy the balance of the Galaxy, but the individual who kills the Emperor is Darth Vader—also Anakin. The tale meanders and both the prediction and Qui-Gon are correct—Anakin is the chosen one, and he did bring peace at last with his own sacrifice. Luke couldn't kill the Emperor himself, but he could make Anakin reflect on his life and kill the Emperor.

    — George Lucas, Cut Magazine, 1999

If good and evil are mixed things become blurred - there is nothing between good and evil, everything is grey. In each of us we have balanced these emotions, and in the Star Wars saga the most important point is balance, balance between everything. It is dangerous to lose this. In The Phantom Menace one of the Jedi Council already knows the balance of The Force is starting to slip, and will slip further. It is obvious to this person that The Sith are going to destroy this balance. On the other hand a prediction which is referred to states someone will replace the balance in the future. At the right time a balance may again be created, but presently it is being eroded by dark forces. All of this shall be explained in Episode 2, so I can't say any more!
    - CUT interview 09/07/99?

But then Luke is a Jedi and there are no Sith.
The Force is "neutral" but it can be used for good and evil. The Sith use it for evil and spread the dark side everywhere, thus causing imbalance. The jedi use the force for good but that means destroying those who spread evil and restoring the parity between good and evil.

That's exactly it. The galaxy (the body) is in harmony when everything is in balance. But the Sith are a cancer that spreads across and destroys the galaxy (the body). The Jedi are the cure who remove the Sith (the cancer from the body).[/quote]
