i read the cronal theory- i really enjoyed it. it's the most logical theory i've read so far and it would make the character really layered and interesting.

Snoke is Rex. Obviously. Who else is that old, and that bald?

Snoke if not Plaguies looks to be a random new old villain to extend the Star Wars series without adding value to the saga and is just an excuse for Disney to make money (I fully expect more random villains and trilogies in the future as well). After the Retread that was TFA, Snoke being old and random, Rey's overpoweredness with no explanation, and that poor explanation of JJ's for R2's return I dont have faith Star Wars is in good hands.

Basically every character in TFA are all new. If there were no added value then they could of just kept Luke,Leia,Han for not added value. Everyone is finding ways to decipher the SW saga to the ST and we are prolly not going to get any of that. We went from only 3 people wielding a lightsaber to a whole jedi/sith war to now 2 people wielding lightsabers(I dont count Finn). everything is new in the ST, Why would they want to recycle a story now? the point is to extend the SW saga and see what direction they will go. Even Lucas couldnt continue and had star wars extended to his capabilities. Im just going off the SW saga and what they said about Plagueis being dead. That is where the story ends. if they decide to take that arc into ST then good I as a fan want to know his backstory from his death to now. its too much to cover for a character when they already established throughout the canon regarding 2 siths. yeah they brought back Maul but he hasnt showed into any movies. at least they give us enough stories to cover certain backstories. I feel that we wont get any more Jedi's anytime soon/no council or what not. we already know Luke had a downfall at his academy so thats a backstory that has to be told to us. I do believe that Snoke can be a lower figure since he is called supreme leader. I think there is another villian(could be Plagueis). Snoke is Snoke...

I'm starting to think that Snoke could be this guy (or one of his"friends"):

... Possibly, he was one of the few survivors of the second Death Star.

And, as some have mentioned, his place in the whole plot could be just as a "weak" leader who is sidestepped by Kylo Ren, this being his whole purpose in the saga and another step to Kylo's descent to the dark side.

... Or I'm just going bananas with this endless speculation!!!

And to some, Darth Vader was not Anakin Skywalker.
Snoke is not Plagueis. But he once may have been.

That's not what happened. In the novel Rey was there for a while before Artoo woke up. In the novel he wakes up because he hears a conversation between everyone where they say they need the rest of the map from the archives of the Empire and Artoo realises he can help find Luke and comes back to full power mode. The film just fu***d it up and JJ came up with a ridiculous excuse.

+ Artoo could only detect life forms not their genetic makeup. If he could do that he'd have told Luke that Leia was his sister and Vader his dad.

Maybe one of Palpatine's experiments. Maybe the first being to ever use the dark side.

He was not shown until TESB, but he was introduced in ANH:

"The Imperial Senate will no longer be of any concern to us. I've just received word that the Emperor has dissolved the council permanently. The last remnants of the Old Republic have been swept away."
    ―Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin

Also, I actually think Snoke's introduction paralleled Palpatine's - a brief hologram, or maybe a couple of brief holograms - so much so that I considered it to be a recycled idea. That doesn't mean he is literally the same character as anyone else, just that he didn't seem very original to me.

I think it's more that the concept of him isn't wholly original...but in-universe, he is a completely new character unrelated to Plageuis---yet.

I know there's been so much speculation and discussion. We've been trying to figure out who this guy is, were he comes from, if he is even real...
But let's not forget just how lame the name, Snoke, is.

The emperor was a huge deal to the galaxy, Tarkin mentioned the emperor in ANH. I think Snoke will be explained in Episode 9.
    --- Double Post Merged, Jun 10, 2016, Original Post Date: Jun 10, 2016 ---
Snoke could be the Sith Master of Plagueis who replaced Darth Tenebrous from legends in the new canon. I do think another good theory is that Snoke was probably a force sensitive imperial officer. I personally want them to tie it in to the history of the Sith somehow even if he forsook the Sith name. People that say 'Snoke is Snoke' forget that it was said he witnessed the RISE and fall of the Empire.

All the suggestions really show why he needs to be Plagueis.

I don't think he is Plagueis either. I never said otherwise. Pablo Hidalgo has confirmed that he isn't. I'm sorry if there was something unclear.
