Ok...now that you've digested that image, say hello to the puppet birds of Ach-to..."Porgs." Not to be confused with the kid's toy from the 90s, Pogs, these are Porgs. They are alien penguin/puffins, they are Force creatures, they are cute and cuddly but with fangs, and they talk to Luke.

So...folks...do we have an Ewok situation on our hands? This...is troubling to me, I must say. I've been a full-on cheerleader and Rian Johnson supporter this whole time. But Porgs? If they wanted to go the whole talking force-sensitive space bird route (there's a sentence), they could have gone with already-canon convorees, no? Why create this new, even cuter, even more marketable Porg? Seems at first blush like a kids' toy moneymaking idea rather than a narrative one.

I hope I'm just unnecessarily concerned. But they're described as "adorable" creatures that are exclusively from this world. Birdwoks?

So what is their point? I can only imagine it is to highlight not only the potential that Luke "is going crazy" (that will turn out to be an unfounded concern), but also to highlight that everything is connected to the Force and that the Force is neither "good" nor "bad." It will be a narrative instrument to introduce that idea to the general audience who is likely unfamiliar with that concept as of now. Outside of that, what else do you think the purpose of these birds is?

Well if they stay in the background & maybe there only interaction is with Luke then I don't have a problem with them but if the start taking out stormtroopers & TIE fighters then yes then they could become problematic well at least to the older viewers as kids are going to love them ( I mean come what kid is not going to love force sensitive penguins).
Is this the final design or an early concept of what they might look like.
Iam also trying to avoid major spoilers so have stayed away from MSW leaks up till now.

I wanted Luke to live on an island devoid of all other lifeforms! Just messing...but I do not have a problem with them. Looks like it is going to be a pretty dark movie and it will need all the levity it can muster.

They're drawn by some illustrator that MSW has asked to help draw sketches of concept art they see. He's the same fella that drew this TLJ Kylo Ren with a...problematic...nose.

I'm assuming the nose is a very forced attempt at an illustrator's trademark for this guy because all the noses he draws look like that, and it looks like an L and an N squished together, which are his nom de plume initials. Nevertheless, it is one silly lookin nose.

They seem kind of silly, but I think we should ask my good friend C2-B5 how much screentime they're likely to have:

What's that, boy? You've already appeared more in this thread than you did in the entirety of Rogue One?
That's weird, considering how much of a backlash there was when your character was introduced.

It's an ancient truth of Star Wars that creatures and characters are introduced transmedia, then have little to no effect on the story. It's almost like there's a lucrative business built around creating plastic molds of characters that children would like.

True as well (though I wouldn't have minded just a little more of him. :p)

But yeah, I think Disney has started to master the marketing aspect of Star Wars. For instance, you could've put an Ewok or Gungan in your film to sell toys, but they don't have to be integral to the film, leaving room in the bigger roles for characters that longtime fans can still enjoy.

They need them to sell stuffed animal's and come up with a kids show for 2 - 5 year olds and sell it to the audience with the argument "IT'S STAR WARS"

    Well...
I heard a rumor that Luke will meet with a grand Jedi Master played by a puppet.
That puppet is done by the people behind Sesame Street & The Muppets.

I hope this is a joke. Has George Lucas gone crazy or what?

I'm down for them. But to be fair, I loved the Ewoks in ROTJ. Do I think taking out Stormtroopers was a bit out there? Yeah, a bit. I always saw the Ewoks being like the Viet Cong or any small base that can take advantage of their surroundings. But I do admit; they did their job too well. We should have seen more rebel forces with Leia and Han to help them out. But I digress.

I am actually down for weird creatures like this. I always loved SWs for how crazy the world was. It is one of the reasons why I loved seeing the creatures of the PT, especially during ATC. Yeah, the CGI sucked, but just the idea there are beasts and other creatures that are either known or unknown fascinates me.

And as for these creatures, I am super down to see what their role is in this movie. Especially, if they are invisible and only Force Sensitives can actually interact with them. Very spirit like, almost like Avatar the Last Airbender in that regard.

I initially had the same concern but as time passed I started becoming more open to the idea because, as you said, we still don't know their purpose. If they have somewhat of a large role, I firmly believe in Rian Johnson to make it connect to the plot. I don't think they'll end up having large roles though. It's just one of the thing we do know about the movie while so much more is hidden so naturally we focus heavily on them, but come movie time, we'll see that they aren't that significant. They also might not be as annoying as Ewoks which is a plus lol. Not to be hating on Ewoks though, I personally don't mind them.

I can see it now. Luke and Rey are pinned by the KOR and a flock of cuddly Porgs goes all Walking Dead ravenous and devours a couple of knights in a bloody gore fest, allowing Luke and Rey to escape...

    1st Ewoks rule!

Well that look is different slightly from the initial description of the puffin bird people. So I would take it with a grain of salt. They also might have jagged shark like fangs behind those cutsie smiles and swarm in the hundreds.

Clearly you are dead inside. You might be right but dead inside.

Part of the wonder of Star Wars has always been the unexpected alien life that populates the galaxy. New creatures are a necessary part of SW. A lot of fans hated the Rathtars in TFA. I loved this added element. To me it just adds to the lore. Things like the Dianoga Monster, Dewbacks, the Rancor, the Sarlacc, Ewoks, Mynocks, the space worm living in an asteroid in ESB, Tautauns, Bantha, etc. They all help the Galaxy Far Far Away come alive. Bring on the Porgs!!!! I hope Luke talks to them and they understand him. I also hear Chewy has some scenes with them. Maybe they drive him crazy like the Ugnaughts on Bespin!

    Erm... welp...

As some people have said already, I can see how they work... but only in a small way. If there isn't a ton of focus on them, but rather the character and their interaction('s) with them, it's somewhat reasonable.

But based off the drawing of Kylo Red by the same fellow, I honestly can't put much stock into this image of them. Nothing against the artist, he (or she?) is very good, just not what I want in concept/idea pictures.

I hope they don't look that sad in the movie.... Although, maybe Luke eats the birds- I mean a man's got to eat and that's why they're so sad? Rey shows up and now there are two mouths to feed.

Seriously- I'm okay if they enhance the story. A lot of times pictures out of context bring out everyone's worse fears. Other than a few reports we really don't know what role they play or how large of a role that is.

Also, wasn't there cute creatures in the original Star Wars comic from the 80's. When they got mad they grew 10x their size and became aggressive- maybe the porgs role is along those lines- to make sure anger, fear, aggression stays out of the island and that's how they're protectors of the island? Anyone that displays those emotions, get's eaten??

I believe the Rathtars were the first monsters/creatures I haven't liked in a Star Wars film. I don't know if it was the execution of the scene or maybe the look of them but something about it just rubbed me the wrong way.

I am looking forward to seeing these new creatures and any others that may be in future films.
