To me it is. I dislike the direction of the ST.

I think what drives someone to write a bad review (half star) is that they are insulted by it. If you broke the film down to 10 or more different components, it wouldn't get that low, but as a way the movie made you feel during and after watching it, yeah, half star.

Mind you I don't blame it entirely on TLJ. I think backlash has been brewing for SW for some time. The prequels were let downs mostly, TFA was kind of mixed and I find not very re-watchable (when I saw TFA at theaters, if I'd been asked after what it's rated, it would have gotten an A+, I haven't been able to watch the whole movie since).

Stuff stood out of TFA and more did in TLJ... so much so that I was pulled out of the experience multiple times. Maybe it's my age or that I was a fan of the EU (legends now), or maybe I just have this idea of what that GFFA is and TLJ and to a lesser extent TFA just didn't meet my expectation.

I'm not saying anyone is wrong for liking it, but I can't get into it anymore. I still like the OT, I still have the originals on VHS. I wasn't a fan of the special edition. I wanted sequels, and more SW once upon a time, now I wish Lucas had kept it and never sold it.

To sum up, why do people rate and comment on films at all? For me it's because I like it and want others to enjoy in the experience, not to mention get more of the same. Or, it's because I really didn't like it, want to warn people that it might not be enjoyable since it wasn't to me, and hopefully if my opinion isn't alone, maybe not get to go through such a bad experience again. For a lot of fans, they shelled out $50 for an experience that wasn't enjoyable, that's reason enough to complain imo.

The best post regarding the film so far.

I totally agree that TLJ has made TFA completely irrelevant. Why watch it again knowing of course what happens in TLJ ?

It does not matter which review site you go on, user comments on websites/newspaper articles in all countries across the world. Everyone is saying the same thing.

This idea of bots and conspiracy theories leading to its poor ranking is just pure nonsense. Roughly 50 % of people who watched the film hated it. Some fans liked it of course, but I suspect the majority of people who liked the film were just normal filmgoers with no affiliation to SW. They probably could not see beyond all the special effects to realise how bad it was.

Disney have a big problem on their hands. I don't see what JJA can write that will undo the mess that RJ has created.

I maintain that Star Wars 9 needs to be re-written. Of course that won't happen so SW for most fans is dead. Finished.

People just feel betrayed, I can totally understand why, this in combination with other flaws in the movie is is making them go ham on it. The disappointment for some people is so big they can justify hating on something they loved for 10-20-40 years with a passion.

But comments like "this is the end of Star Wars", "Star Wars is dead" etc are just not true at all, of course they can't undo some things but trust me they will try, we will get a bridge movie between OT and ST that will try to exlpain Snoke and Luke's motivations, JJ will try to make fans service with Episode IX.

I have seen it twice now with my group of friends and still we are divided and will forever be, we have had strong arguments for both sides, but for me this movie is 2.5/5 and my cup is half empty.

Edit- welp, botter admits he just “started the fire” with the bots now. Okay.

I give up on this. If i look like an idiot, then I apologise.

If the rating is legit. It’s legit.

It's Star Wars, the most beloved movie series of all time. People signing up just to share their delight or disappointment does not surprise me. The more you love something, the harder you take it when it let's you down. That's your explanation.

I think the main point with the BOT thing is we have to look at it from both sides. Yes, a random bloke had "admitted" to this BOT business so you could take that on face value without evidence. However, there are many humans who just like to take credit for something as some sort of ego boost. The BOTs may or may not have been used - Schrodinger's BOT. ;)

We have seen this with game releases. These are people who think the actual rating or review scores do not tally with their experience of the movie. They think it is overrated and therefore try to influence other by writing reviews (which they have never done before) and going for 1/10 scores. This is activism, nothing more

I remember this documentary on the BBC, were Mark Hamill offered some prophetic words on the possible divisive reception of Empire Strikes Back. And it was divisive at that time (31:09 mark):

It's exact the same as it's with TFA. There was a time (maybe it still is) when the first like 25 pages (aside of the first one) were all 1-4/10 reviews. Trolls or genuine dosen't matter... TFA isn't a 1/10 movie.
I think IMDB ceased to be a place for real movie reviews. It still is for older movies, but politics and trolling killed the reviews for most recent ones. Many DCEU fanboys for instance downvote anything Disney related because it's a competitor to WB. IMDB can't be taken seriously anymore for mainstream movies imo.
