You probably remember that, in TFA, Rey was keeping tally marks on the wall for some reason. Most people assumed that she was tracking the days/weeks/months since her parents left, which seems like the most reasonable guess to me.

In my opinion, tracking the days since someone left strongly implies that you at least hope that someday they will return.

Since Rey was sold as property, it would be pretty optimistic for her to hope that her parents will ever come back for her - but hey, optimism is good. But there is also a second reason she probably wouldn't hope for her parents to come back: Considering TLJ happens immediately after TFA, that means that at the time when we see Rey making tallies, her parents were almost certainly already dead.

I can only see three possible explanations at this point:
    1. Not only did Rey hope her parents would return, but she didn't know they were deceased
    2. Rey did know that her parents were deceased, but she's just a little crazy and counting the days anyway
    3. The tally marks were just a total misdirect, and she was tracking the Dejarik score between her and Unkar Plutt (or some other unimportant thing)

    What do you think?

The most obvious answer is RJ didn't even consider that.

The first possibility is the most plausible.

Still the answer about Rey's parents is very vague.

Quote from Maz Kanata, "Dear child. I see your eyes. You already know the truth. Whomever you're waiting for on Jakku... they're never coming back." Rey has repressed the memories of her parents and at some point told herself they were coming back for her. That's probably when she started to make the tally marks.

The tally marks are meaningless, just like a lot of stuff in TFA.

Rey has no parents, but in all actuality, she's a force-sensitive clone sold on Jakku by perhaps DJ, which will reveal later that she is one of many Reys, as someone has been cloning force-sensitive beings in all out force war. Lol

Rian just ignored them like he did the whole of the force awakens.

Rey's "parent's" flew away but RJ says they died on Jakku.
