So, we know what's wrong with TFA, but what's wrong with the OT?

    Lulz!!

This is what TFA defenders have come to?

"TFA isn't perfect, let's trash the OT!"

Did people do this when the PT sucked???

Oh wait, I thought TFA lovers were tired of ANH comparisons???

I think TFA is really shining a light on thoughtful Star Wars fans versus done of you consumers.

TFA fanboys are so insecure about the film and the realistic reviews that are starting to come, that they are literally trashing films of their childhood.

It's passed wierd into sad territory.

    TFA WASNT ALL THAT GOOD.

It sucks but you don't need to trash the OT in a Mickey Mouse/JJ hypnotized rage.

Just be happy it ties for 4th best in the saga.

    Stop over-rating it.

Stop telling us to "read the novelization" or "read this JJ interview" etc.

Stop comparing it to great thinker films. Plot holes, illogical characters, and magic aren't what made thinker films great. It's just not a good movie.

Stop telling fellow fans on a Star Wars forum to not overthink it.

    Stop trashing the OT.

TFA just wasn't as good as we hoped. It's ok to admit it.

The TFA defenders are funny its worse than when people tried to defend the prequels. The prequel defenders never told people to read the novelization and watch interviews to properly understand the movies.

My complaints with the ot are actually as few as with TFA
Luke was an idiot in the beginning. I love the character, but in the first half of ANH he was barely tolerable. I cringe every time.
The fight between Obi-Wan and Vader is just embarassing, but plot wise it fits wonderfully. It’s simply badly executed, leaving the imagination of what should be two masters fighting to the viewer.
Other than that the non-remastered version is pretty damn awesome.
The plot is simple and despite all the things not explained (what is the Empire? What happened to the Jedi? Why the Rebellion? Who are all these people?) there is no need to be any more complicated. It’s a movie about a boy who comes from simple circumstances and beats the most dangerous enemy in the galaxy.

With ESB my only gripe is how silly Yoda is. Just cheap laughs and slapstick. Yes, it can be explained away with how he's testing Luke and so on, but it still rubs me the wrong way.
Other than that it's a damn near perfect movie. Hoth and Han an Leia is just so absolute great!

RotJ is actually a movie I can’t find a complaint with. I even like the ewoks. Even C3PO is tolerable (barely).
My only tiny complaint is the aprubt change of saving Han to attack the death star. Just a five minute interlude, a short explanation would have been good.

Woah, man. I didn't see anyone in here that defends TFA. Or no one that started to bash the OT. Every film has it's problems and there is no such a thing as a perfect film. The OT has it's flaws to, but I, personally, overlook them, because I love the films so much.
You know, like for 2 flaws, there are 50 great moments, and thats why I think they are really-really good films. It makes you doesn't care about the flaws, because the other great moments are sooo good.

For me ROTJ is the weakest of the OT (but that doesn't mean it's bad), I don't like the family realitionship beatween Leia and Luke (of course it is natural for everyone, that they are siblings, but for me it always felt forced). Despite the Ewoks beeing cute and all, I don't like the idea that thay can win against the Imperial Army.

In TFA I have 3 major problems. One being the Rathtar scene, because it took me out of the movie (like the Ewoks in ROTJ). Another, when Ben kills Han. I would felt better if it was going to be the major emotional peek in the next movie, ep.VIII. And the other one is Starkiller base, which was lazy writting in my opinion (just like the family connection beatween Leia and Luke, for me).
But I really liked the film (it was nothing more than I hoped for and nothing less), every time I watched it, just like ROTJ. I don't rage about it's flaws, because the other parts were worked for me. I liked it. That's just my opinion man, I'm not defending it. And I'm not defending the OT either, because there are people in this world, who don't like them. Big woop.

I'm really not aware that anything that flies can take them down, the AT-AT armor was too strong for the blasters of the T-47 snowspeeders and using the harpoons and tow cables was merely an improvised but clever idea. The Imperial walkers were literally oblivious to the Rebel artillery and Luke merely opened a hatch with his lightsaber.

Well, Luke did have some training to begin with and it probably consisted of several weeks on Dagobah.

Just because the editing of the ROJ was so bad (an entire "legion" seemed to be less than 12 guys storming the bunker!) and obfuscates realistic numbers, shouldn't lead to premature conclusions. Let's say you are one stormtrooper and see hundreds of these ferocious guys coming at you, what are your realistic chances of survival?

I believe a realistic analogy to Ewoks would be piranhas. One does little damage but once they come in overwhelming numbers it's rather different.

Leia's lack of emotion in ANH was a flaw. Her whole frikin planet was destroyed making her loose family, friends and almost everything she held dear and moments later she is blasting troopers, acting tough and arguing with Han about simple things as if nothing had happened. Sure I'm perfectly aware that the threat of the Death Star could divert her attention but we are still talking about her HOME PLANET and not just a bunch of random dudes that didn't agree with the Empire. A little emotion afterwards or even a simple celebration in honor of the fallen of Alderaan would have been nice.

Boba Fett's mysterious sensor claking device. Why in the world didn't the Falcon detect Slave One if it was right behind him? That and the fact that Fett had Force powers to see the future cause what does he usually do when he gets to a ship? Park his inside the garbage? There is just no logic in Fett having arrived at the Star Destroyer and saying ''I have a feeling that the Falcon is still around so I'm gonna tell these guys to park my ship in the garbage so that I can tail them.'' What thoughts could have crossed the Imperials minds when Boba Fett asked them to stick his ship in the garbage?

The destruction of the Executor has always bothered me ever since I was a kid as well.

It's insulting to think that this little fire took down Vader's mighty ship.

Well, I didn't like TFA, except for certain scenes. And although I'm a major fan of both the OT and the PT, they had their flaws. Just about every movie I have seen - whether I like it or not - had flaws.

And Luke's training...yeah and people complain about Rey. But I can overlook these and have.

I've never overlooked the problems regarding Luke's Jedi training. I thought it was badly handled in ROTJ.

The OT and PT are pretty much the same, in regards to TFA I don't know what to think of it. Hello everyone!

    "It's a feature, not a bug." :)

Leia shows almost no outward reaction when Alderaan is destroyed, and almost no reaction upon learning that Darth Vader is her father. She gets this from Padme, who also shows very little reaction to things like being sent to a battle arena. Some people say that their lack of outward reaction is a representation of their toughness.

Nothing to complain about the OT. I really enjoy the movies, especially TESB that in my opion it is a real master piece.

TFA has a dozen, or more, epic scenes that makes this movie a future classic at the same level of the OT, the time will tell.

I also love the OT. But it had its problems, like the PT, TFA and RO. What is the point in nitpicking about TFA, RO or the PT and ignoring the problems of the OT?

I don't think it was the small fire it was the fact that a ship crashed into the bridge and it lost control.

A drunk on a motorcycle will lose control and crash.

A car at speed with no steering wheel will go out of control and crash.

A plane with no pilot will go out of control and crash.

A train with no brakes will go out of control, derail and crash.

A Super Star Destroyer having an A-Wing fighter smash though its control bridge killing all the bridge crew, destroying its control systems and causing the Super Star Destoyer to lose control, will crash. DS2 just happened to be in the wrong place at wrong time.

A plane is bound by gravity and it will not crash but fall. A car that is running will crash because it keeps going in a certain direction till it crashes. In space there is no gravity. What did the A-Wing do? Mess up the bridge and nothing more. The ships engines are not tied to the main bridges function. If the A-Wing busted the way to steer the ship it then would have kept going in a certain direction and it wouldn't have fallen. Haven't you seen what ion cannons do to Star Destroyers? They make them loose EVERY function. What happens to them then? They simply float in space and don't fall down. It happened in TESB and it happened yet again in RO. The SD from Empire simply stood still and the Rebel Transport safely passed by. The one in RO simply stood still and this allowed the rebels to use the hammerhead on it. No gravity and no engines working equals floating in space not falling down. Just see for yourself. The A-Wings take out the ships shield and then the pilot rams his ship into the bridge which is tiny compared to the rest of the ship. The ship was even high up in space that you can't say that it was pulled by the Death Stars gravity either. If it would have flown into something and crashed then your theory is valid but the ship got it's bridge ruined and it fell! In space!

You are making assumptions then criticizing the film based on your assumptions.

Perhaps steering was effected? This seems a simple possibility.
1-The console controlling maneuvering thrusters still has power and crossed wires fire thrusters.
2-Ensign no name slumps over on the stick.
3-Prior to the crash they were in the middle of moving around. Without a change in control because the bridge was demolished.

And you are just making assumptions to try to justify your assumptions. Does it look like you that the Executor had a steering wheel (or stick as you said) for Ensign no name slumps over on?
''Prior to the crash they were in the middle of moving around.'' Another assumption made by you to justify what you are saying. Hit the play button again and look carefully. The Executor was not even moving. It was stationary. No movement, no flying, no direction kaput. The ship was damaged and it simply fell down onto the DS.

Of course they do. Prequel apologists are CONSTANTLY telling me I need to watch the The Clone Wars to appreciate the prequels better.
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 30, 2016, Original Post Date: Dec 30, 2016 ---

It's not about trashing the OT to defend TFA. It's about challenging the notion the originals are flawless, untouchably brilliant films that render any new Star Wars films as being completely incapable of being enjoyed for not living up to the exalted, perfect OT. It's about making the point that if the same scrutiny that the new SW films receive were applied to the originals, the same amount of nitpicks and flaws would be found to complain about - like the nonsense beginning of Jedi or the teddy bears defeating a legion of Imperial troops - that stuff would never fly today. This cynicism is delivered by those that grew up loving the OT so much that they exalted those movies to untouchable status, which makes them incapable of liking any new films in the same universe.

The Star Wars films are, and always have been, fun, popcorn blockbuster fare for people of all ages to enjoy. They were never perfect films. The difference is that then we didn't let hyper-scrutiny ruin our enjoyment of those movies, but now, everything has to be taken so damn seriously and scrutinized to death.

The prequels are a different story in that they fundamentally failed as films, not just SW films. They fell short in the basics of what constitutes quality filmmaking, and so the numerous criticisms they receive are well-deserved, and are not just nitpicks.

In regards to The Force Awakens, you choose to ignore the historic success of the film, the overwhelming critical praise, the fact that more tickets were sold to it for any previous SW film since the original, that it was nominated for the most Oscars since the original, and that despite all this, the film isn't good and everyone is wrong for liking it. There is no insecurity in liking this movie, because we have the overwhelming critical and popular support on our side. You have a bunch of internet cynics and critical nobodies, who predictably trash any movie that achieves widespread success, just as they have done extensively in the past. Any movie that achieves what TFA did is guaranteed to get dumped on by a chorus of online haters, who are obligated to hate anything popular.

You don't have to overthink it at all. Just enjoy it for the fun ride that it is. Overthinking it leads to cynical nitpickery, which as I already said prevents any and all possible enjoyment of anything new.

Stop telling me that a movie that became the most critically and popularly successful Star Wars film since 1980 is bad.

Stop telling me what I'm allowed to enjoy.

Stop telling me that Star Wars fans are a monolythic unit made up of people who should all think the same thing and are incapable of difference of opinion.

You miss the point trying to debunk my examples. The film showed a crash of a fighter into the bridge it then crashed into the Death Star. There are many possibilities you have picked one allow mo other thinking then blame the film. That seems unfair.

The Force Awakens is not a truly terrible movie. It’s a nice movie. It’s not, by any means, as nice as Star Wars. It’s not as fresh and funny and surprising and witty, but it is nice and inoffensive and, in a way that no one associated with it need be ashamed of, it’s also silly. Attending to it is a lot like reading the middle of a comic book. It is amusing in fitful patches but you’re likely to find more beauty, suspense, discipline, craft and art when watching a New York harbor pilot bring the Queen Elizabeth 2 into her Hudson River berth, which is what The Force Awakens most reminds me of. It’s a big, expensive, time-consuming, essentially mechanical operation. The Force Awakens is about as personal as a Christmas card from a bank.”

    Hmmm.
