Now that you have seen this film does it seem like it was a successful reboot of the franchise?

    Is it a soft-reboot?

IMHO, I think this mirrors what J.J. did with Star Trek 2009.

He opened the universe up on the movie while bringing back characters from the past in Star Trek. This time we didn't need to go the alternate timeline way.

You have so much to build on with this film. The Film set-up so much to build from and wasn't just closed.

This summer’s been a significant one for movies such as this. Mad Max: Fury Road, Jurassic World, and Terminator Genisys are follow-ups to franchises that are at least 20 or 30 years old. Each takes its own approach to the soft reboot

I would kind of agree. I think the balance of new and old was just right to bring people back with the familiarity they like while having enough new stuff to openi it up to new fans and keep people interested. I expect a lot more risks taken in episode VIII.

I think it paid homage to what went before (and more importantly what was successful) but after the PT it needed to be able to draw back that core support, but the film set up a story that i think will differ greatly from the OT

IMO it was a soft Reboot.....after the PT era......I think most "experts" felt SW needed this.

It was a fun exciting trip.....I had a blast.....but nothing will ever be the same as the OT.

also as a Huge ROCKY fan.....I loved CREED....another great soft reboot.

I think that it's much less of a soft reboot than many of the others mentioned.
Unlike a lot of the others that are only amplified by familiar with the originals, I think a lot of it actually relies upon the audience being familiar with the OT and the characters and plot points therein.
Many of the emotional plot points in TFA just plain don't work if you're not familiar with the OT.
I like the film (a lot), but I'd call it a soft-soft-reboot, if at all.

"soft reboot" is so nebulous that its kinda hard to answer. I think it is a straight sequel, that only has a tenuous tie to the previous film, because of the large time gap.

The other movies you mentioned are soft reboots they pick up where others left off with recast actors.

Trek was a hard reboot they recast actors changed significant events and retold old stories.

This was neither. It was a clear sequel all the events flowed from the previous films. No one was recast. The story while had moments that were familiar they were all different in how they played out, where in the film they occurred and continued the story of previous characters.

To me, trek is only kinda a reboot. It takes place in the same universe. I don't think cast changes matter much, see The dark knight, batman forever or X-men first class.

Time travel weirds things. Spock and nero come from the old universe.

It's a sequel. It's not a reboot in any shape or form. A few similar story elements, that's it.

    Get over it.

Except for the mention of a clone army, the kalesh death mask, and the flags on maz's castle.

    It is reboot.
Story of TFA is almost a rip-off of ANH.

Just curious, do you find terminator 2 and 3 to be reboots? They share the same plot as the first movie.

I suppose it could go either way, depending on how you look at it.

    Not really.
Terminator is completely different type of movie from Star Wars.

Can it not be an original story and a soft reboot?
